Not gonna lie, in my first playthrough I chose not to fight Magus simply because my party wasn't healed up. I was in awe at the game's willingness to do a 180 on Magus' character, and for a while thought he was just an inconsistent character, but looking at it from this perspective makes far more sense and makes this decision that much more profound.
My all time favorite rpg, and what happens with Magus' story is a big part of why.
