- Water lilies growing on ponds and lakes are beautiful to look at, and they also aid its ecosystem. but when they grow too thickly over the water's surface, the large pads interfere with oxygen exchange, which leads to algae blooms, that in turn causes stagnation. This is exactly what's happening in Kashmir's Dal lake. A part of the scenic lake is choking due to weeds and lilly pads. WION's correspondent Johan Castell travels to Srinagar to find out more.

I have seen this lake from a travel show by Jonathan Legg in 2017. He tried to visit a Wiseman in the area, very memorable scene, the show is called THE ROAD LESS TRAVEL
Fantastic source of "silk", the fibres from the stalks that Vietnam is using to weave fabrics (turned into fashionwear) which are much sought after in Europe.
That's lotus silk. The fibres aren't as prolific in the waterlilies

In 70s Bollywood movies you can see the real beauty of dal lake in those movies.Dal lake was so blue in colour and clean.and have been to char minar garden and it is an iconic garden many Bollywood songs have been shot before.

When any ecosystem is no longer self sufficient it means that man has destroyed that which is necessary for self sustainment. The real question that was never asked is how did nature handle itself so well for so long? What did man remove that caused the collapse of the ecosystem.

I spent some time on Dal lake some time ago, the lake was beautiful then. At that time, the local boatmen seemed to be controlling the growth by working full time
removing the excess plant life. They would load the boats so heavily that the hulls would be on the waterline. I often wondered if they would be able to keep ahead of the invasive growth, it seems they could not. Let us hope that the restoration project will bring the lake back to it's former glory.

Govt bodies are notoriously corrupt and inefficient.
We should use drones to monitor the lake deweeding process remotely.
I suspect that the clamshell shown in this video will be more than sufficient once mounted on a motor powered raft.
Half of the lake is encroached & with weeds. Government has enough resources for at least to buy machine to clean the lake. Think when it is fully cleaned it will look so beautiful.
What a shame, we have spoiled the very beautiful Dal Lake. People should leave greed, & uproot the lilies (Pamposh flowers). Lot many people have constructed their houses in Dal Lake in connivance with corrupt govt agencies.
