Yeah they are both built like tanks. Sure wish this one had electric start. Major compression on this boy. It is a lot louder than that new one as well but I’ve never heard a truly “quiet” Tecumseh of that size.
You can tell the year on the 1977 by the code on the tag. The first digit is the year, and the three other digits are the day of the year that it was made. AMF (who owned Harley Davidson from 1969-1981) made that for Sears under the 536 model prefix. The newer one was made by MTD and when sold at Sears, they were "247" model prefix. The 1977 machine can be fitted for an electric start. The small decal on the top of the shroud should mention that. There's a world of difference between the two. The 1977 is a beast, but parts are getting harder to find for them. Briggs and Stratton supports whatever is left for parts support for these. AMF was sold to Noma, and then to Murray. The Chinese almost ran them into the ground and B&S brought them back to life. Tecumseh's motto was "Better From the Start" and comparing the two, you can see why.
Great and detailed video. The older stuff was made to last many years. I have two 1980 Toro's. Both the 524 and 824 were bought at the same time by my dad in 1980. One went to the cabin and the other one was used at home. I still have them, and they both are running and still blowing snow every winter. They have always been kept out of the weather and both of them are in very good condition. The eight HP Tecumseh is nearly impossible to cold start without using the electric start. It must not have the de-compression technology of today's engines. The 5 HP Tecumseh starts right up with the pull cord no matter how cold it is. After replacing the weather cracked tires with new much more aggressive snow blower tires the chains are no longer needed. It is amazing how heavy built the older snow blowers are compared to the new stuff. Today, one needs to buy the HD line of snow blowers to come close to the heavy built machines of three or four decades ago. I have a 2022 Toro Power Max HD 1232 and it is a very large machine. One thing about these newer machines that the old ones can't even come close too, is blowing distance. That is an area that has really improved. And even in extremely wet heavy snow the Toro Power Max HD will not clog. I had to install impeller kits on the older Toro's, which greatly improved the performances in heavy wet snow. All in all, the older machines of the 70's and 80's were built to last and I am sure many of them were handed down to the kids as the parents became too old or passed on. Videos like this one is a great way to observe the difference between the machines of today and those of yesteryear. Thanks for sharing.
They definitely don’t make them like they used to. Everything on that old Murray was made here in the USA. Everything on that new MTD was made over in China. Don’t expect it to last as long as the old one did, in fact, when it does die chances are the Murray is still going to be chugging along without issue.

True, but this was made prior to Murray buying AMF (who made this for Sears).
