I was also thinking they could utilize high wall space above the packouts, with some true pallet racks. My work uses them in our receiving area where we had the bottom 7' tall so you could have work space on the floor but all that storage up the wall and not wasting space. It could be easy tire/wheel/bumper storage, stuff that may not move that much but you don't want to get rid of.

Like someone stated, the tint needs to be on the outside. Tint on the inside traps heat in the actual glass and can damage it over the long term, you have to talk to the glass manufacturer about if you are able to do tint or not on them. Plus that mirror tint needs to be on the outside too to create the mirror effect

Can’t tell if I enjoy seeing the shop being build more or the cars. It’s turning out brilliant. Could build a walled lean-to out the back and use it for part storage. Having the main shop for tools and vehicles only. Loft should definitely have sim rig + hangout

Idea for the fab table, Mount Plate / board the bottom frame and put the welders and associated stuff in there and can wheel it around as 1 unit.
Whatever works for you, but that shelf space under the table is a must use.
On the window tint, if you light the outside, it will work better at night.. It needs the light to bounce off it to work. (Like in movies with line-up, identity parade thing, witness in dark can see through.)

That was my plan. I just need to come up with a good game plan on how to build it. I wish I had another shop when I built this one so I didn’t have to rush to get it operational. Would have been easier to do everything at the start. But I needed a place to work.

    • @ttvoclaw675

@@Taylordrifts as an apprentice carpenter over in the Uk, I’d recommend either think wooden beam or preferably metal beam going across the building (and if you attach this to multiple uprights it should hold). Then build off of that back beam to the back wall using wood or metal (depending on prices). Or the other option is big metal beam with support beam going to the trusses in the ceiling. Or traditional supports going to the ground.

Couple of recommendations. Those Milwaukee storage things are good for residential use but they don't appear scale well for fabrication shops given the amount of wall space they consume. You really need industrial storage cabinets. Lista is the usual pick but they are pretty pricey. A couple of my friends use a cheaper brand made in the USA called "Stor-Loc" Cabinets. For example all your medium and small stuff like hardware, electrical harness supplies, etc, go in their modular drawer systems and the upper sections you use their large heavy duty shelving above (or wall mounted wire shelving on a budget). In the shelving you can use clear plastic bins because they significantly reduce time to find things and you don't have to label them since they are clear. If you go all in with this concept you could ditch your tool boxes all together and design custom tool storage cabinets. I would probably keep one tool box on wheels for your trailer.
If you are on an extreme budget I have used a brand of cabinets up here in the Midwest at Menards stores. They are called "Klearvue" cabinets. They have a separate category for garages. They have diamond plate finishes on the cabinet and drawer fronts. I have been using them for at least 8 years without issues. The overhead cabinets are pretty nice because they are deeper than standard 12" cabinets. If you use their "Ucreate" app you can select the cabinetry garage section. That is where you can essentially build the whole thing, buy it, have it delivered or pickup.
For small hardware stuff (on an extreme budget) I like using plastic organizers from Flambeau Plastics. They are called "IDS" cabinets. Its a hybrid between mobile and stationary storage. All the dividers are adjustable, really sweet product. I highly recommend you consider using these. So easy to organize all your hardware, etc.

  • @johnmcanulty7341

    Just a thought or three:
I put casters on my 20 ton press. Works great!
Maybe having the oil drain, tranny jack, support, dollies, etc live in a space closer to where they will be deployed - less travel distance? I have suggested a Drill press but, perhaps a Mag Drill would be more suitable? There is a newer metal saw that has a better functioning miter now - maybe time for an upgrade or dedicate the older saw to a spot adjacent to your material rack.
Addressing the building volume: With the high walls, high shelving and a compact warehouse pallet lift would be a safe alternative for longer term storage access and, be able to load the new loft area. Sometimes a framed 4ft low platform, with storage under works well...
Is a porch in the works? No step. Make sure you can easily roll stuff through the man-door when needed by minimizing transition at the threshold.
Is there a motorized door(s) in the future?
Ikea makes a nifty black out shade for the inside of those pesky windows. Or, plywood for a tool wall?
    Good times!

I know your limited for floor space but you should look into getting actual pallet racking thats close to your ceiling height. if you leave the bottom open you can keep the layout the same, but have storage above and hang a light off the bottom of the shelf for any dark spots. you spent $300 on a small shelf when you could have invested that into solving the issue long term vs a short term solution.

You can try applying finishing wax to the welding table, to keep it from rusting. It has worked on my welding table so far, however it isn't nearly as humid where I live. I work in a machine shop and am responsible for ensuring all the bare metal machine surfaces don't rust. Most of the rust inhibitor coatings are oil based and will contaminate a weld table but finishing wax doesn't contaminate anything and doesn't seem to effect conductivity.

@@mattmanyam I thought he covered it with PB blaster, not wax. Any thin oils like that or WD-40 will eventually run off or evaporate, and you risk contaminating your welds, especially for TIG.

I'd love to see you get a car front half cut with doors and windows and see you make a rear wall so it's like an enclosed vehicle for your sim rig. That'll help keep all the equipment clean when you're working in the shop, and also provide a cockpit for you. You could make the power windows works and some other items to make it a fun experience. Would be sick, especially if you plan to have friends use it.

I recommend either building a waterproof enclosure outside the shop for your PC (with cross flow airflow) or building something that’s passively cooled with absolutely no fans (including on the GPU). Not only is it gonna get super dirty, super fast, but like 90% of the dust you make is either carbon fiber or some other metallic, conductive material. A little bit of steel or CF dust behind the mobo is enough to short stuff out.
Also look into building a NAS for your security cameras and random files you don’t want cluttering up your PC😊

Car Wizard is a dweeb but he has some really good thoughts. He uses rolling shelves to take parts from a specific project and that rolling shelf stays with that project until it's done. I've seen this same practice in general custom equipment manufacturing, it works well. It can even be a way to keep up on the progress, empty shelves equals finishing the project. Can fill shelf specifically from bottom up so stuff goes back on top down. Just a thought.
The film reflects a certain amount of light, if there is more light inside than outside (night) it will seem transparent at night. You should put hurricane blinds on the outside, good for security and direct sunlight.

Taylor, I have a solution that I've seen/used before for concentrated storage that will help (likely in the container)...
Make sure the floor is level!
Buy a bunch (4 or 5, at least) of the wire 'NSF' shelf units (the ones with the round uprights) and get the casters for them.
Put them in the container 90⁰ from the normal way, and tight next to each other.
They work like "vertical drawers", and you can just roll out the unit you need, then roll it back in when you're done.
For non day to day use, makes a lot more use of space!
