    You should consider getting a rubber mat for the top of the workbench. That way, you can work on stuff on the bench without scratching it. I think it would be a good idea to attach the rubber mat to the workbench using snaps. That way, you can roll it up, use velcro to store it, and still see the stickers you put under the epoxy. The snaps will make it easy to remove the rubber mat in case you want to take it outside and rinse off grease/ oil but also help keep it from moving around.

    Taylor, everything you said about wood is correct. I find the best thing is to keep checking. for sq. by using a speed sq 6 inch and 12 inch and a framing sq (on the outside) as you go along (you are averaging everything) that's wood working if you don't you end up creating problems that could have been avoided.... I really enjoyed the Cumings build you put so much work into it ...

    Two things with the clear resin.
    1) To get rid of the bubbles while its not cured use a fire source and quickly move it across the surface and the bubbles will come to the top and pop out.
    2) It is not fire proof so once it cures if it catches fire it will burn bright, hot and throw bits of hot resin everywhere.
    For the wood you should use brads or needle nails to line it up then use the screws once its all lined up.

  • @user-fr5fz6vv6z

    Great job! With that epoxy you can sand out scratches starting at 600 grit and working up. You could also get a 1/8" lexan polycarbonate sheet to lay on top to protect your epoxy. Use aluminum angle 90 degree or "U channel" to secure the sheet down by screwing in to the edge of the MDF.

    I finally got a pole barn shop set up at the house just waiting for the concrete to fully cure before I get my lift moved from my small garage up by the house and although I didn’t build the pole barn I did wire it, put the garage doors on it, and insulate it (for the winter), I’m still debating on if I wanna do ac or not cause well I’m used to working outside in the heat and as long as one of the front doors is open and then the back door is open you get a very good breeze goin thru there if I don’t do ac I’m definitely getting one of the industrial shop fans tho just to help move some more air and keep it a tad cooler

    • @Taylordrifts
      @Taylordrifts  ปีที่แล้ว

      Just do some cheap insulation and AC. It’s 100% worth it. Doesn’t add that much to the electric bill. So much nicer to work and. And depending on where you live your stuff doesn’t rust from the humidity.

    Yup i dig the shop upgrade projects just as much as the vehicle projects... One thing you may think about doin is puting some sort of trim around the table top instead of it just being the mdf... it can still get beat up and potentially mess up the epoxi top... So a wood or even a plastic trim edge around it would work great... It turned out nice though...

    I do remodels and home repair for high end clients, though not a master carpenter. I stain anything wood. A good stain soaks into the wood a few mils and becomes a complete weatherproof coating while paint sits on top of the wood and easily chips or scratches, letting liquids and humidity get in. Being inside an air-conditioned space, painting is fine as long as you don't abuse the surface and do touch ups when needed, or don't care about having a finish that could easily last multiple decades.

    A few things: first, you NEED locking casters if this is going to be a working surface. Also, you could attach the top from underneath with angle iron or at least 90º brackets. Since MDF is quite weak, I would even recommend using a fastener system that works like a helicoil to increase the surface area to mount to. The other way it could have been done would be to mount the MDF top to a plywood bottom to make mounting more secure. I would also recommend getting your hands on some maple or other hard-wearing wood strips 1x2 or something like that or measuring for hardwood dimensions 2/4 by 6/4 and using a bullnose router bit.

  • @zcool135
    @zcool135 ปีที่แล้ว

    While epoxy tops look nice they tend to scratch pretty easy (I put an epoxy finish on my computer desk). However the nice thing is if it gets too scratched up you can sand it down and apply a new layer that will 99% cover all the imperfections and bring it back to that really nice smooth glossy finish. Quick tip though, if you round over the corner of the MDF and let the epoxy drip over the edge it will cover the area between the MDF and the epoxy preventing it from separating if you hit the edge with something.

  • @JamesYoung61
    @JamesYoung61 ปีที่แล้ว

    From boatbuilding we use the screw and glue technique, which come down to gluing as much surface area of the wood together as you can and using screws to do it and to get it into a welders mind, would you rather put 2 bolts in your roll cage or periphery weld the join into a unibody, wood glue is like that.

    The best $50 I've spent is 24"x50 foot roll of magnetic sheet off Amazon for my stickers and decals. You make magnets for tool boxes, refrigerators, gun safes, etc instead of permanent sticker bombing. Also gives them a little 3d element to them if you stack them. Never throw away or sell something with those memories of stickers wasted

    Personally I would have painted the MDF white.
    I have a couple of clean, white work benches and they are the best for doing precision work. Jobs like rebuilding carburetors, rebuilding automatic transmission valve bodies, etc are much easier when you can see the small parts against the white background.
    If i wanted to put stickers on the bench surface, I'd probably leave at least a 24"x24" area bare white.

    If you want to get fancy you could add the metal with a little lip and add a second coat fulling it to the brim but having worked with that stuff befor I would say its risky and just do metal around it as it sits.

    That big of a workbench is awesome! Love the sticker idea. You did mention that you cut the bottom shelf pieces in two because a whole piece would not fit. Actually that is not accurate. Using basic geometry, if you tilted the piece, one side touching the bottom supports the other side lifted to the top support, that angle would allow the section to fit as one piece. No big deal as two pieces was not a problem, but if I didn't mention it, my Math teacher would know and confront me about it!!!!

    The simple wood trick for doing a build like this is use a stop block and cut each parallel side pair back to back. So simply cut your 45s on the starting end, then measure out and place your stop for the length you want, then use that to cut both short sides and long sides respectively. This eliminates measuring, cutting on the "right" side of your mark, factoring in the kerf etc. They'll be exactly the same and in turn create perfectly square corners.

For future epoxy jobs, use a blow torch and go over the epoxy after its on the table. It will get rid of the bubbles left in the mixture.

    Interesting video. A few comments: 1. That workbench looks a tad high. I realize. Maybe not for you, but maybe for your friend whose name I cannot spell!
    2. Bora makes a great miter saw stand (actually mobile base) that takes up very little space. I bought one to replace a Toshiba I've had for years.
    3. I also bought two DeWalt shop mobile stands, I think they list for a Dewalt planer. One for my Bosch bench top router table and one for my Evolution Metal chop saw. Modified the legs of the Dewalt carts/stands to better match my height. Aka, cut the legs!
    All three are easy to move around and store in a corner. I have photos but don't think I can attach here. Any errors are thumb related!

    The Aquarium stands I've built are very similar to what you built. The exception being the corners and casters, they both take away strength from the bench.. Mobility is awesome and all but for a lot of weight you`ll wanna take the casters off and, place 2x6s on the corners and in the center between the 2x6s you already have on there. This will transfer any weight to the ground and not solely on the screws! I`m just nit pickin...lol.... Looks great man!!

    Seeing the big sticker of Sandy on the table makes me wonder how the ol' shop supervisor is doing.

    MDF soaks in… a base coat of 3bond/epoxy, and then stickers down to a better surface, give a nice 3d feel to it also.

    G'day,
    I think the work bench turned out awesomely for a steel guy.
    Just one thing:
    You have all this head height above the new bench. You could also use a couple of car winches and get it up out of the way if your ever tight on space. But you might need a good steel guy to help you out. 🤔
    But thanks for sharing ✌️ Peace from Melbourne Australia.

    If I remember right, black tail studios on TH-cam, has a two part coating similar to ceramic coating you can apply, to harden the surface of epoxy a bit and make it more durable and last longer. Might be worth checking out!

    Pro tip, after you lay out the epoxy wave a blow torch over it and it clears our all the bubbles. Even small ones you cant see.

    Before working on the top, adding that extra 1/4" you talked about might not be bad. You can sand the epoxy down after it's scratched then reapply

    Looks Gr8 Taylor however, you really do need at least one (two would be better) angle brace. Preferably at the rear attaching the top surround to the center post. That will 100% stabilize and minimize any lateral shift.

    Gotta put up some wheel/tire racks on the wall, those nittos are taking up quite a bit of space! Also I thought you were starting the loft, got excited, feel like I was baited bud. 🤣

    Shortcut on knowing the difference between the inside and outside on 45° cuts is the thickness of the material is the same as the difference. The inside of a 16" piece of 1" thick material cut at 45° is 15", or a 16" piece of 1/2" thick material is 15-1/2". If both ends are cut at 45° double the thickness, minus the outside length, so 10" outside x 1" thick = 8" inside

    One small thing, I would've maybe glued on theose scrap plywood pieces back around the posts on the bottom. 😎😎 Other than that, yea.. would've probably been a good idea to pain the top before the stickers went on 🤔

    you can always hit it with the orbital sander and buff it when it gets allot of scratches and or add another layer of epoxy.

    We're,, as are you Taylor,, looking forward to getting that loft built. There will be a ton more floor space for you once you get some of the less used stuff up there.

    put a sealer on the bottom side of the MDF, don't want the bottom side absorbing and discharging humidity causing the table to warp, my brother does epoxy pour tables
