    This part-5 video has been explained necessity of transition curve? Shift in curve? Requirements of an Ideal Transition Curve? Parameters of transition curve? Length of Transition Curve and Setting-out Transitions with solved problems.
    Necessity of transition curve: a train enters in to the circular curve directly from the straight, the radius of the track will suddenly increase from infinity in straight to radius in the circular curve, thereby producing a jerk due to sudden introduction of centrifugal and centripetal forces. This will not be desirable from the passenger comfort as well as safety considerations. So transition curve required between straight and circular curve.
    SHIFT: For the main circular curve to fit in the transition curve, which is laid in the shape of a cubic parabola, it is required be moved inward by a measure known as the shift. This shifting of the circular curve inwards to meet the transitions.
    Requirements of an Ideal Transition Curve The transition curve should satisfy the following conditions.
    a) It should start from the straight part of the track with a zero curvature.
    b) It should join the circular curve tangentially.
    c) Its curvature should increase or decrease at the same rate as the radius, versine & superelevation.
    d) The length of the transition curve should be adequate to attain higher speeds in future.
    Parameters for design of a transition curve:
    On a transition, the direction of vehicle changes as it passes over the transition causing lateral forces. The maximum magnitude of this force is on circular curve. However, it is important that the forces are introduced gradually so that passengers are not discomforted. Further, from twist or safety considerations, the rate of introduction of the superelevation has to be limited. Accordingly, the various parameters for a transition curve are designed based on:
    Rca : Rate of change of actual cant over transition = 50mm/sec (as per ACS-10 of IRPWM) Rcd : Rate of change of cant deficiently over transition = 50mm/sec (as per ACS-10 of IRPWM)
    i : Cant gradient i.e. rate of change of actual cant over length of transition = 1 in 720
    Length of Transition Curve
    (1) The desirable length of transition ‘L’ shall be maximum of the following three parameter values
    (a) L= 0.0056 Ca × Vm
    (b) L= 0.0056 Cd × Vm
    (c) L= 0.72 × Ca
    Where, L = the length of transition in metres.
    Vm= max. Permissible speed
    Ca= actual Super-elevation on curve in mm. in Kmph.
    Cd= cant deficiency in mm.
    Q. In Rajdhani route the maximum sectional speed (MSS) is 130 kmph. Calculate the maximum length of transition for a curve of 600 m radius on a BG section. Assume required data.
