INSANE HOSPITALITY IN SOUTH WESTERN UKRAINE 🇺🇦

  • Before leaving the Carpathian Mountains (south western Ukraine), we went for a walk above the village of Kvasy (near Rakhiv) in an attempt to find a natural spring that our guesthouse owners told us about. Well, we got a little lost, but thankfully an incredibly friendly Ukrainian family invited us in to their home for both food and drink. It is moments like these, meeting people like this, that make travel so incredible. We never expected this amount of incredible hospitality but the people here in west Ukraine have genuinely been some of the friendliest we've met.

    What a beautiful experience you had with these friendly people. I actually teared up seeing how sweet the lady was to you. She reminded me of my mother who always told guests, "eat, eat, it is good for you and will make me happy seeing you enjoy the food". I think that there are many people worldwide who have the same behavior when dealing with guests. It is heartwarming and such a mood enhancer to see and realize that most people share the same welcoming traits no matter where they live. Thanks for putting me in such a good state of mind through this video. Take care and have a pleasant and rewarding week. 👍🤗❤🛫🙏🌎

    Hi Matt and Julia. I am new to your channel and loving your adventures. This video brought tears to my eyes. I am a second generation Ukrainian born in Canada. My great grandparents and grandparents emigrated from Western Ukraine in the early 1900's. Seeing these wonderful people welcome you to their home is just so heart-warming. Ukrainians will give you the shirt off their back if they could. I was able to visit my ethnic homeland in 1996 - went to Lviv and Kyiv and was able to meet my relatives for the first time. I too experienced the great hospitality of the Ukrainian people. I will never forget it. Blessings to you on your travels.

    What a beautiful vlog all around. The peaceful scenery and the beautiful generous family. What kind and giving people. I pray they are okay with all the evil being put upon their country. When someone says "it was diferent/bether back in the day" , this is what they are referring to. People that are older than 40, i think this is what they are missing the most when it comes to there past. As someone in the comments sad - the video brought back some good memories for me.
    Im sure youve heard the sayng "its not about the destinacion, its about the journey" , Matt and Julia. Well i think what separates you the most from ather people that are douing simular things like you (travel vloging) , is that you guys somehow manage to capture the best moments from both ,the journey and the destinacion and share them with us.

    12:00 you should have gone up that hill(there's like remains of the old castle), its only half an hour walk from the main road, but the views from there overlooking town are just spectacular. Greeting from the resident of Tyachiv region which you were driven past on the way to Kchust:) Well I hope you at least don't miss the Palanok Castle in Mukachevo) I mean.. Palanok is trivial, especially for the experienced tourists like you two, but still ok. Enjoy the rest of your stay in Transcarpathia)

    What a great video! Really enjoyed eavesdropping in on your conversation with that family. Speaking a common language with people really takes travels to the next level -- I've got to get back to working on my own language skills.
    I've never been to the town of Khust, but nearby there's a massive natural field of daffodils, and in the spring there's a super bloom! I went a few years ago, but a bit too early. I think it was only about 30% in bloom. It was still pretty cool!

      @@MattandJulia "Learning" (the super slow way) Russian, but I have to say the grammar kills me! So many word changes!
      I did have another question -- did you give the family anything before you left? I'm always curious about the potential expectations/reception of any physical appreciation for spontaneous hospitality.

    • @MattandJulia
      @MattandJulia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ah nice! 😊
      If my advice if it's worth anything, I would say, if you are learning Russian for the purpose of travel and communication (i.e not for anything official), then don't even worry about the grammar. I never learnt the grammar and speak (& write) with mistakes all the time, but I have never once had any problem, reading, being understood or understanding anyone 😊
      Of course, over time, as I speak more and more in Russian with people, and listen to native speakers, I have picked up which endings to use on certain occasions but even native speakers don't say them correctly sometimes 🤷‍♂️ (Matt, obviously 😊)
      In terms of a gift no, we didn't give anything, we tried to offer a little money for the food but they weren't having any of it, they just wanted to feed us 😊

    When I 1st came to Basil I felt the same , mmmmm , the food here tasted so good
    It's the soil .
    The soil gets depleted of its mimerals because of rotating the crops so often .
    Now it tastes normal to me .
    But look at this place .
    No wonder the food tastes so good , the fields are so clean .

    It seems the politicians ruin it all.

    Few people know, especially in western countries, that the areas of Transcarpathian Ruthenia before 1867 were called Austrian / Habsburg Siberia. They were considered the most sunken hole in the entire Habsburg monarchy. Disgraced officials or soldiers were sent there as punishment. All kinds of people considered "politically suspect / dangerous" were also settled there, including for the entire Danube monarchy. Such a person was given a plot of land and was to live there for life under the supervision of officials and gendarmes.

  • @Rafa-pr5fe
    @Rafa-pr5fe 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Well, you are in the area of Transcarpathian Ruthenia. About a hundred years ago, in addition to the villagers, you would meet an officer of the imperial-royal gendarmerie who would ask where you came from, if you got lost and showed you the way. About 90 years ago, apart villagers you would have encountered a Czechoslovakian gendarmerie officer who would ask and point you to ... Now you have encountered villagers ... and you know I forgot about one more thing some 100 years ago you could see this host's grandfather in the service of the Imperial-Royal Army in the Bay of Kotor

      @@eedragonr6293 Who?!!! The Royal Hungarian Gendarmerie or the Czechoslovak Gendarmerie? I know that everything happens later in this area and that is why it is worth moving there in the event of the end of the world, but over 70 years later? !!! 😁

    • @eedragonr6293
      @eedragonr6293 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Rafa-pr5fe Indeed these are lands stolen by the Soviets from Poland, former Czechoslovakia, Hungary... And I may wonder where are these "minorities" today : the Polish, the Czech, the Hungarians, the Germans, the Slovakians... And what kind of minorities do they still have there? 70 years, a lifetime, represents only 3 generations. Where are the younger people, like the parents of the girl? No, today the "drone war" is between Ukrainians and Russians. And I keep my advice to the foreigners not to move next to a war zone.

    These moments in the video makes you realize how pointless the last cold war was. There are also people on the "otherside" of the frontlines, good people, but most of us have been blinded by our own fear of the others and the unknown future that we instead chose to engage in an arms race.
