Quick note about Elizabeth's death and the corset: Elizabeth was, for a variety of reasons (most quite sad) famously obsessed with maintaining her appearance. She almost certainly suffered from what we would now understand as an eating disorder. She also was well-known for tightlacing, which is when you tighten a corset as much as possible. Even in the 19th century people understood this was not a healthy thing to do. There were definitely fashionable women who did it occasionally at formal events, but doing it all the time like Elizabeth was actually pretty shocking.

Corsets were not generally uncomfortable unless badly tailored. Even women in sports would wear corsets for a very long time. The meme of "corsets = tight and bad because women suffer for men" took off in modern times.
I mean they were primitive bras, as a bra wearer they can be uncomfortable but not life threatening for daily use.
Ye, as explained by some people. It was only like a sometimes thing where people would actually tie them up so tight they’d crush your ribs.
Most people just put them on comfortably, like I’ve seen like farm hands and working women in like SUPER OLD photos with corsets and they don’t look like they are dead lol.
It’s kinda the same thing as sometimes people put on clothes 2 sizes too small for that “look” but it’s really really uncomfortable and crushes your lungs, also funny enough. So idk, when I heard about corsets the first couple of times I was like “oh no! Scary death things” then I learned that “oh wait what they were literally just bras?” And “ohh, people in the old days sometimes had pretty severe body dysmorphia and used to hurt themselves in a self harmish way to make themselves feel better but were probably suffering from some sorta eating disorder or body dysmorphia.” Like modern times.

I just want to take a moment to point out that while sitting too much can be bad if you're not sitting right, standing can be worse even if you're standing right. Humans aren't horses. Ideally you want to be walking or something, but if you're standing too long without significant leg movement, you're actually doing more harm than good. The cardiovascular system is strong, but making it work unassisted against the full force of gravity for hours on end is a lot of stress on it, and not a healthy kind either.

The name "William Bernard" in the newspaper article on Snyder is likely from the parents not wanting their family and child to be identified for privacy and safety reasons. I had a friend named Matthew who got hurt badly enough for it to be put on the news, but the news used the name Lauren because his parents didn't want pressure from the entire public knowing who they were.

What is actually good is a moving desk, for which you can change the height. Sometimes you sit, sometimes you stand, it’s all about changing positions at will.

I've been stabbed and KIND of didn't notice...
Let me explain:
I work with knives and tend to keep them exceptionally sharp. While boning out some beef, my blade slipped and pierced my forearm-all I felt was the sensation of my skin parting and something entering my body. No pain and very little blood. I shit you not. Edit: I've got the scar to prove it!

In recent years there have started being more and more carbide edged razor blades and carbide can get so insanely sharp compared to normal knife edges and so I've multiple times cut myself like a pretty shallow but surprisingly long cut on my arms while getting one out of the package and only realized cause of the several inch long trail of blood on my arm lmfao like even just gently grazing your arm with the tip is plenty to open it right up. Other that that I had a like 2.5 inch long cut like half an inch deep in my inner thigh when I woke up after blacking out at a festival that I'm still not sure where came from that somehow never bled despite being within a couple inches of that main artery. When I woke up I was so confused as to why my leg was stinging and I look down and it's the biggest cut I've ever had but since it's such a fatty area there was no blood, still have a decent sized scar from that the reminds me to take it easy with the alcohol cause a couple more inches and I would have bled out from that artery without ever knowing, my friends kept trying to get me to go to the medical tent but I was so hung over I couldn't and just sprayed it clean with saline spray I had for my fresh piercings. Like it was a big enough cut it seems like even blacked out I should have had some vague memory of it happening and the only memory I have is something far worse but unconnected

I love what you do and I appreciate all the times you've made me laugh! However there's somethings I'd like to point out about one of the last deaths in this video. The corset as a whole has a lot of misconceptions due to media, misogyny, and shock factor that everyone chases. I highly recommend checking out historical fashion experts like Bernadette Banner, other enthusiasts like Karolina Zebrowska, and the folks they often associate with who have varying degrees of merit in the field
I ain't mad or nothin cause plenty of people think these incorrect things about corsetry, but as historical fashion world wide is a passion of mine, its important to me that people of the past are fairly represented.
As for the death of that lady, my best uneducated guess as to why she didn't notice sooner was perhaps her body went into shock, which can happen even if you don't know you got injured 😂
I got a motorised standing desk, because it was a second hand £800 model, and I got it from some rich venture capitalist company who moved to another building with new desks, so I spent £100 on a desk that's worth £800 and I use the standing mode much more than I thought. I also use it to work whilst working out, in between sets. It's amazing.

So it is absolutely certain that in addition to the normal detritus such as horse poo and mud that mixed with the liquid there would have been copious amounts of human dung too. I have a number of different issues of both Police News and The Police Gazette from the 19th century. They are one of my favourite reading materials, and you are correct in the video, it is full of very excellent Victorian illustrations of crimes that took place across America in the 19th century. There are some extremely interesting, bizarre and frightening stories throughout, which adds to the really cool illustrations. Or vice versa, perhaps. They are a great testament to the darker side of the American people during the mid to late 1800's, and I cherish them in my collection of weird and bizarre antiques and artefacts from the Victorian era and long before.
