Rob can judge measure better than most; he ate my lunch and took my supper home earlier this year. It was great to see you match so well against him. Well done!

Guy is doing just basic MOF stuff whereas most of hema guys just fucks around and find out.

Holy fuck what a tense fight (for me at least). Your first point against him was nuts. His supreme sense of measure along with his rigid sort of position really allows him to capitalize on any open line at a moments notice

The lunge form is so funny, almost looks he's triping into you.

Not to discredit Rob but i think GF afterblow rules and finals pools (survivability rating determining winner) would really change the way this match went.

I was thinking the same thing.

@@zaboobebop upfront- I've never fenced Rob and but I have many clubmates that have and I have no doubt of his fencing ability.
That said, a lot of those points were uncontrolled thrusts that Josh very clearly afterblowed in a realistic tempo. I just think a ruleset that prioritized defense and control over single tempo, almost right of way style fencing would have drastically altered the outcome of this fight.

It is strange, I thought it would be rapier vs sabre. I know Childs for his rapier stuff. When I saw him with a sabre I thought you would win. This really shows that their are things that are in swordsmanship that are universal and in our era you can be the best in multiple disciplines. Good effort though you really made Childs work for it.

Rob's system can work with most 1 handed sword with complex hilt

    • @mohamedyusuf4777
      @mohamedyusuf4777 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@@jaketheasianguy3307 The thing I find strange is the when period authors talk about different weapons and in practical experience their are things about these swords that are unique to them. Conditioning your body to leverage these things at a competitive level and making all the adjustments to the techniques to make them work and making the correct decisions at the same speed. This is difficult and usually comes with a tax on performance. Which is why seeing Robert do it is so incredible. On the other hand he could have been doing sabre for 15 years and thus this is just normal but assuming he is mostly a rapier guy adjusting his system to sabre it is a feat of skill.

@@mohamedyusuf4777I don't think Rob is a single weapon guy at all, a lot of HEMA practitioners are not single weapon people. There are also systems for Sabre and Rapier afterall, like Destreza being applied to Sabre.
I found that I didn't get any points trying to fight sabreists on their own terms, but once I started just doing Destreza with the sabre I was doing much better.
Robert's style is very observational, his guard is low so he can see your posture and distance perfectly. He springs like a trap once you trip one of his wires. He doesn't need to be doing any specific system to achieve that. If anything, his style seems most similar to Epee than anything.
In any martial art though, skilled and master level fighters often abandon the trappings of the art. Watch a master spar their student and they'll strut around them like a rooster and do perfect counters just to flex on them, it's very funny. Robert has footwork and striking that works for him, so he doesn't need to rely solely on teachings from any specific manual or master.

Damn. This was far dirtier with doubles than I expected. Childs didn't parry once and yet he's extremely hard to beat in most rulesets.

I'm very surprised that people can't adapt to Rob Child's exaggerated lunges. They look very fast but a good fencer should be able to bring that point off line and riposte easily - Rob Childs simply has no balance left after those huge lunges. He even telegraphs when he lifts his foot and raises his point. Why doesn't anyone practice against a fencer's lunges if they know he will be competing? Simple enough, parry that point off line and do a simple thrust, if red would have knocked the point away and took a half step in with a thrust he'd have scored each time. I'm personally not afraid of any fencer going into such a lunge.

  • @ThatHabsburgMapGuy

I hate this video so much! 😆
Two shallow leg touches, three doubles, including that ugly early one, and two fleches. No creativity, no artistry. The only good part was that one pretty fleche riposte Josh got.
This shouldn't be what we're aiming for.

The thing is, he only attacks when he knows he will land the thrust. Which has made him number 1 in rapier. If you could parry everything anyone throws, you too would be number 1 in the world.
