    I've been using poly bushings on all my previous cars and here is what I observed: od you go poly, you need to replace all bushings to poly as well. Othwrwise, those regular bushings will go bad pretty fast. The second thing is that poly is great if your roads are in good condition. If not they start making this squeeking niose.

    Apparently the ball joints are shot as well, you got quite big slack there. Before I did same upgrade I bought both sides brand new Lemfoerder arms and replaced the new bushings in them with Powerflex bushes.

    usually ball joints crack and dry out to, so u need to replace all arms anyway... after replacing all arms and suspension components , including shocks, engine mounts, transmission mounts u can think about using powerflex to compare them with stock lemforder parts....

    i had to pop off the tie rods to get enough play to get them back in. Also when the bushings are half out took a sawzall and cut off the bushing and went back to the press. Was quite a workout pressing them out.

    I would not do poly on the E39 front control arms, and definitely not on the thrust control arms, they need to articulate on multiple axis. I say this not as a keyboard warrior parroting what others have written but having directly installed OEM, Turner Ball joints and poly. For the thrust arms the X5 bushings are the best, you get factory ride quality and they are the most long lasting for rubber bushings, I got 7-8 years out of them without the inevitable tearing. Turner ball joints are quite awesome on smooth roads, but not so great if poor conditions. Excellent on a track car too. The only advantage of poly is you don't need a press to get them in, which is great for driveway mechanics. Edit to add you may find the Powerflex wear out even faster than factory rubber, they don't like articulating in any direction than up/down, and in the E39 its a demanding position for any bushing to be in, you either want mono-balls or heavy duty X5 rubber bushings.

    I've already done the big bushings on the front of my 540, I went with the black ones. Still need to do the smaller ones and sway bar in the front. Big difference just replacing the big bushings. Bet with them all done it's really good!

      Hey what's up! I'm curious how the install went with the black bushings.... I read online the black ones have a funny fitment and may require some modification to fit? Would you mind sharing your experience when installing these?

    • @pugs1377
      @pugs1377 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bstarnes514 no modifications at all. The hardest part was pressing the stock bushings out.

    • @bstarnes514
      @bstarnes514 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @pugs1377 OK fantastic thanks for the clarification.... It never made sense to me how people were saying the bushings had to be modified to fit.... luckily, I have a decent shop press so I can handle the bushing removal no prob. I guess I'll start the installation and see how it goes. 🤘

    Which is more beneficial to do first the rear or front (assuming both are okay currently)? I’d think rear since it’s rear drive?

    Access to my e39 anti-roll bar bushes is a lot more difficult than this- can only access it from the top- on the right side- steering wheel side here in the uk there is also a metal plate over one of the mounts(i think this is the exhaust pipe protection)

    Nice Job. i need to rebuild the suspension on our E53. is the ride affected? the roads in Wisconsin are horrible and my wife doesnt want anything to make the ride worse than it already is. is this a saturday after noon job (per axle )?

    • @TheBimmerBarn
      @TheBimmerBarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah! Easy weekend job, you might get more road feel but it's not going to make the car ride any stiffer. The big X5 tires also provide a lot of cushion and comfort, so I'd go for it.

    Love the videos I replaced all my front links with the kit from fcp euro and my whole front end shakes when I brake. Have you had any issues like that? I also shook before I replaced them thinking it was the problem and I also have new brake rotors

    • @TheBimmerBarn
      @TheBimmerBarn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd check the torque on all the bolts, check the alignment, make sure it all installed correctly, and maybe try bedding in the brake pads? Weird problem, good luck!

    Are you replacing the ball joints too or with you replace the arm and just remove the bushings and reinstall

    • @TheBimmerBarn
      @TheBimmerBarn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm just installing the new bushings, I'll probably get new control arms at one point and then just transfer over the powerflex bushings again easily. Thanks for watching!

    How have these been holding up? I'm also a bit sceptical for road noise in these, have you been noticing a great increase in it?
    I have a fully poly'ed up E46 with reinforced subframe etc. and that thing is LOUD lol, but im a bit interested in doing this to my E39 since it is a common failure point.
    Cheers!

    How's the impact on NVH?
    I like how easy and straightforward the process is, but would hate to pay with increased NVH because of the stiffer suspension parts

    • @TheBimmerBarn
      @TheBimmerBarn  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not that noticeable in noise, but you will get more precise steering feel from the road in the front. Once you change out bushings that have more weight on them (subframe bushings, engine mounts) I'd say that's when you''ll get more noise into the cabin. TLDR: Not a noticeable change in NVH!

    I'm looking to do all the bushings on my 528i some poly like the sway bars and the rest just OE so I still have comfort, is there a diagram that I can use to get every bushing I need?

    • @TheBimmerBarn
      @TheBimmerBarn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      They have a cool diagram for each model car on their site. Just select e39 5 series and it'll show all the bushings and installed positions!
