I bought my first one, a 2004 with the five speed AWD, without thoroughly looking it over and ended up with a bunch of issues, however I still drove it for about two years. A rotted spot in the rear end where the suspension bolts to the body forced me to stop driving it and look for something else. I got very lucky finding a 2005 in much better shape, also a stick shift AWD, for a decent price. Now I want to turn the 04 into a camper I can tow with the new one. I will point out that I'm also trying to fix the idle surge issue that seems to be a common problem, but aside from that I'm a happy owner of two Elements....

I'm curious...have you been able to diagnose the idle surge issue yet? My '06 has had the same problem for several years. My mechanic always says there's no problem. I've just been living with as I didn't know it was a common issue with the E.

The TB need to be OEM, especially the IACv on em. I made the mistake of swapping in an aftermarket and then also trying to just put on a new IACv. There is also a setting procedure to make sure they set the idle correctly. Great fixup!

@BisforBoost my element is a wheelchair conversion, so the frame has been modified with a new floor and whatnot. The corners of the box are minorly rusting but the frame is still 0 rust.
My question is how would you recommend treating the rust on the box? I was planning on wire wheeling it clean and then I guess treating it with rust converter and then painting over that?thanks rustKings

Once you discover that amount of rust, advertise it for parts to get some money back. In Arizona when we see this on inspection we walk away. It's a time and money waster. Done. Rust never sleeps. It just keeps on eating.

Have you had any intermittent starting issues on the element?

That rust looks like my 1999 Crv in New Jersey (USA) I bought a year ago. I sware I can hear it rusting away to dust at night. Nice vehicles but disappointed. Yes, I realize I'm complaining about a car that is a Quarter century old.

Luckily, my 2007 Sc has had problems but not major ones. Only paid 4K.
a back yard mechanic "lowered" it to the point of being VERY U N S A F E.
It has now been returned to "Normal" so it no longer shakes my bones over
every single tar strip in the road. I'm just LOVING the Toaster because I
haul a lot of stuff including DRUMS. Loads of room and the seats raise
to THE SIDES EASILY .... Looking now for some decent 20" tires to soften the

Seems like you should have gotten the car checked out before you purchased it. Looking at the absolutely filthy ignored engine compartment and the interior of the car not to mention the condition of the underbody..... who would have thought this car would have had problems😂
Men suck add buying cars. It doesn't matter that men know a whole lot more about cars than women.... women have enough sense to get things checked out. When men have it set in their mind that they want a certain vehicle they just pull the trigger and deal with the consequences later. Stupid

    • @BisforBoost

What would be the fun in getting it check out when I do it for content ? This car lasted 2 years with me driving plus then sold for 5k and is still on the road. Being in a rust belt, the under side isn’t that bad. But if your from a southern climate then I see where your coming from.
