  • Potty Train your dog fast!!!
In this video, we give you 4 quick potty training tips that will get your dog on the right track!
The first tip we cover in this video is one of the most important! Creating a potty log allows you to keep track of your dog’s peeing and bowel movements This is a way to write down accidents, successes, and even allows for better communication in a home! We often get clients who tell us that, “My husband was supposed to let him out”. These situations can be avoided with a potty log! Over a week, it will be clear to see when your dog needs to go out, when we can add time to advance their potty training, and where we need to make changes as your dog will typically have accidents at a certain time of day! We provide our clients with a printable potty log, but adding this information on a white board, piece of paper, or excel document works as well!
Once the potty log is created, you need to create a potty schedule. Each potty schedule will depend on a variety of factors such as, age, breed, temperament, and where your dog is in their potty training process. Developing a potty schedule will allow you to know when your dog owes you one! When potty training younger dogs, we typically highlight a few key times to let your dog out. Some key times are first thing in the morning, before bed, after naps, after play, and after meals and water. As your dog progresses, we can add more time in between each of these key times listed! Please remember, when in doubt, let them out!
You need to remember to watch your dog at all times! In order to successfully potty train your dog, you need to have 0 unseen accidents! Some accidents are fine as long as we catch our dogs in the act. If you can not watch them, especially during times they owe you one, we recommend utilizing an appropriately sized crate. Some clients have used the tethering method, but that is not our usual recommendation. Over time, you can increase your trust in your dog, but at first you need to be on top of them 24/7!
Our last tip is focused on water and food limitations. First off, you need to make sure you are not over feeding and watering your dogs. Always consult a vet to determine what is the right amount of food and water. Regardless of how much they should eat and drink, a good general rule of thumb is no free feeding and water. Water and food should also be put up before longer days away from home or bed. We generally recommend last food 4 hours before bed, and last water 2 hours before bed. The goal there is to make sure they completely release their bladder to prevent them having accidents overnight or waking you up! Once a dog becomes potty trained, these rules don't matter as much!
