this was fun to watch, "this foil is Resistance like all French tend to be" haha your intro and energy is awesome :) thank you for the tips, building one today :)
Hi! Your videos getting more and more scientific! Once you go pro, you can never go back! :D Great budget propagator, i really like it, i would do also something similar. There is one minor modification i would implement: i would cut a small hole on each side of the box on the lower part, really close to, or at the bottom. This way as hot air exits at the top hole, cold air can flow in from the bottom holes from every side. Natural ventilation, without a ventilator. Leave some flaps of aluminium over those holes, and you can control it: box getting too hot? Raise the flaps, more cold air flows in. Temperatures too low? Seal the flaps, and you constrict the ventilation. You already got the thermometer in it to monitor. Now you have a temperature controlled propagator :) At least it would work this way in my head. Anyways, ever thought about doing some hydroponic projects? Careful, its addictive.
Currently with this setup, my box stays at exactly 27° while the bulb is on and 23° when the bulb is off. This has been pretty perfect for me but I really like your idea and the thought of additional ventilation. I will think about that for sure! Thanks for watching and commenting. I have not yet read a lick of literature on hydroponics. I probably shouldn't, I have a very small apartment! 😂 I already need to add another shelf for the next batch of babies that I hatch in this box.

@BetsyBegonia thanks for another awesome video! I think I’m going to make one of these as I have virtually everything I need, even an extra grow light & live in the PNW (super gloomy). Unless I missed it, what temp & humidity do you aim to keep your propagation box at?
The humidity runs between 85% and 95% depending on how much water has pooled in the bottom. When the light is on, the temp is 27-28°C and when off, about 23°C.

Hi Betsy! I've watched the video, made a list, and read the comments, but I think I've missed what temperature one should be watching for with the thermometer. What's too high or low? Thanks!
Great tutorial. I like the cutout for the thermometer gadget, not sure I would have thought of that. I would be inclined to use white paper around the sides rather than foil, or you could slap some flat white paint on the inside. Surprisingly, flat white surfaces reflect better than foil :-)
I used foil since most actual grow light boxes have a reflective interior but also because the box can be very humid (92% humidity) and the paper would not do well.
Hi Betsy, thank you for your video it’s very informative. I collect succulents and I’m looking to set up an indoor propagating station so to speak for lithops and conophytum. Up to now all I had really found was actual grow lights as in the ones in your other video. I live in northern England which is also permanently grey wet and cold autumn and winter and even spring lol. Anyway I’m left a little confused it’s more the light information I’m after rather than the box as I have several heated propagators that I use and want to light them. I get the lumins and Kelvin thing you explained that really well. When I saw your video I thought great I’ve found a good cheap resolution to my problems. Then I found the Sansi bulbs and I thought for the price and coverage area they look really good however, when I look at the specs they are only 4400 Kelvin, so are they really as good as people say? Or does the fact that they are full spectrum make up for the lost Kelvin. I just thought I’d put the question out there, I know nothing about these things. Thanks

@@geoffreyivie9885 It worked very well. It's been a very long time since I used this box and those plants are mature now so I won't be doing another video on it.
Great video and very useful too! I saw some propagation boxes at Ikea that are used for seeds and I thought how cool and professional those looked but I think this is a much useful solution (especially since I don't plan on starting anything from seeds, not much patience here 😂) I was wondering, and this is semi-related to the video, do you use any rooting hormones when propagating plants from cuttings? If so, would you say they are a must, especially when trying to propagate hoyas from cuttings?
The first time I propagated Hoyas, African violets, and Epiphyllum cuttings in this box, I did not use any rooting hormone at all. I just put them in soil and kept them moist. I now use rooting hormone just as a precautionary measure! I don't see any big difference.
Because the humidity in this box is often between 85-95%, they don't need watering very often. This is a great environment for Hoya propagation. I check them every couple of days anyway because I LOVE TO LOOK AT THEM!
So far I have grown Hoya, African violet, and Epiphyllum cuttings with great success. I put my silver squill in there and it bloomed within a week, it went NUTS.
I use this propagation box with an IKEA grow light - but when I had the light as close as you have it I actually burned some of my plants, even burned some of my hoyas.. it is that good :P
Thank you for simplifying what appears to be the moon landing. EVERY OTHER CHANNEL(I've seen) MAKES A SYNOPSIS of the Kalven and Lumin requirements LOOK LIKE MAKING ROCKET FUEL OR GOING TO THE MOON. THANK YOU SINCERELY!🤝🏾 Ps. I subscribed.
I would probably just let them sit near the east-facing window to be honest but currently I don't have any shelf space for them so I'm using the prop box.
Several times you noted that several of the items for this project are expensive. Why not just buy a small grow tent and grow light, for probably the same price? Also, it won't look rigged up.
This was much, much cheaper than a grow tent and grow light. And it's not expensive. It's a plastic bin with a clip light and a CFL bulb. I have grow tents now, they are much more costly and they're meant for growing all the time. Not everyone is growing new cuttings or plants in these conditions at all times. Some people just want a quick prop box go help a handful of propagations along.
I used it for a very long time and it did not get very hot. But that's also why I warn people to put it in an area with good ventilation and to be sure to prevent any fire hazards. You wouldn't want to keep this in a small closet or something.
Hi. I dont want to hurt you. But. Wattage and lumems are not the measurements you need. The spectrum is the magic word. Plants use red and blue lights mostly and cool white with some ir and uv. So these wavelengts can be supported with cheap leds from Chna. Try it. The blubs you hava shown are not suitable to grow a plant. If you give your email or any acces method, i send you photos of my cheap growbox. I do not use fb or other social media.
I don't mean to hurt you but this is a super simplified video that solves the need of hundreds of people who just want to grow cuttings in a box and help them thrive on the cheap. And it works. 🤷♀️

Thank you for the informative vid. I made a propagation box based on your tutorial. However, I'm not getting much condensation or humidity. Any advise? Should I place a plastic bag over the rootings in the box? I'm just afraid my Monsteras may root rot.
I find that water pools in the bottom below the raised grid and it creates a lot of humidity.
@@betsybegonia I'll try that. Thanks Betsy for the fast reply.
Very informative video
This is a super cool little DIY! Do you think this box is only good for propagating cuttings in soil or could it work for water propagation as well?
I think it would be just fine for water propagation as long as you refresh the water regularly.
@@betsybegonia Cool! I think I'll try to make it this weekend, thanks!
That was very inventive
How did you cut the lid of the box?
I think I drilled holes in a circle with an electric drill, then used a knife to saw it out fully.
@@betsybegonia Will you do an update on this propagation video sometime in the future? I'm going to set this up and if there are any update I would appreciate it
@@geoffreyivie9885 It worked very well. It's been a very long time since I used this box and those plants are mature now so I won't be doing another video on it.
Hmm... I have an extra tray used for cooling cookies, I think that would be perfect for the bottom. I just might have to give this a try!
That's an idea! Could work for sure.
@Kaisasha - that’s a good idea as I haven’t baked cookies in years haha
I wonder what difference would it make if you used full spectrum grow lights vs. these bulbs
I don't know! This budget system has worked really well for me so far but if I ever have the budget to go bigger, I will find out!
Do you think this setup would do well for propagating succulents?
Yes, as long as you don't let too much water pool in the bottom. Succulents like a more dry environment.
@@betsybegonia Thank you! I will definitely have to get a hold of some rooting hormone and try making this propagation box 😊
Very good thanks for the info!
Thanks for watching!
Once placed in the box, how often are you watering your little plants? Like normal? Or do you find that being enclosed they don't dry out as fast?
Because the humidity in this box is often between 85-95%, they don't need watering very often. This is a great environment for Hoya propagation. I check them every couple of days anyway because I LOVE TO LOOK AT THEM!
What sort of plants did well in your light box? Medium light/high light?
So far I have grown Hoya, African violet, and Epiphyllum cuttings with great success. I put my silver squill in there and it bloomed within a week, it went NUTS.
very cool
• where did you purchase your cuttings?

Betsy Begonia • omg, thank you so much
Betsy Begonia • links no longer work. thank you anyway.
@@SlayWithADisability Oh it's possible they don't sell in winter months. The Hoya vendor was located in the UK.
I use this propagation box with an IKEA grow light - but when I had the light as close as you have it I actually burned some of my plants, even burned some of my hoyas.. it is that good :P
Oo Gosh you may want to be careful with that thing. 😂
Great video! Just one comment: That's not an LED bulb, that's a CFL bulb.
Thank you
Thank you for simplifying what appears to be the moon landing.
EVERY OTHER CHANNEL(I've seen) MAKES A SYNOPSIS of the Kalven and Lumin requirements LOOK LIKE MAKING ROCKET FUEL OR GOING TO THE MOON.
THANK YOU SINCERELY!🤝🏾
Ps. I subscribed.
😂 Thank you!
Hey you're calling your bulb LED when it is a fluorescent bulb or 'CFL'.
Oh woops, thank you so much! I'm going to fix this in the description. Thank you.
Hey Betsy! Do you use this light box to propagate in the summer time as well?
If u have a Walmart u sure have clamp lights that’s where I bought mine
We don't have Walmart in France.

Thank you, Caitlyn!
Clamp lamp in the pet store
One thing I might add, is that the light you used can get really hot. I would caution anyone to watch this.
I used it for a very long time and it did not get very hot. But that's also why I warn people to put it in an area with good ventilation and to be sure to prevent any fire hazards. You wouldn't want to keep this in a small closet or something.
6500k and 2700k both ! This is Okay. not only one or the other.
But that woman who got the nobel was polish immigrant... so you should look for clip lamps in Poland maybe..
😂 I didn't understand your comment at first because I had no idea what I said in this video in relation to Poland or Nobel Prizes.
@@betsybegonia very nice films anyway.
@@dopracy Thank you very much.
Those low energy bulbs are really bad for you. I wont use them they give off something that they call dirty energy.Just wanted to let you know if you didnt already. Love your vids though :)
Omg!!! Get to the point !!
