Been using daylight led lights to grow lettuce for 5 years and has given me more plant mass than of those grow light rip offs.

@@humblegrowth only the difference is the taste. Having this kind of setup makes it taste watery bland, less sweet compared to the grow lights.
I've been researching grow light strips for a project I'm working on.
The "grow light strips" I've found are 3 red 1 blue for lettuces, 4 red 1 blue for flowers 5 red 1 blue for fruiting crops such as tomatoes, strawberries.

Hold on you can get household led bulbs with the same Samsung or epistar led chips in those grow lights you mentioned and easily find them at 4k. Then regarding density why don't you talk about when ten 10w bulbs are use together with the domes removed vs a 100w led grow light ?
For people who want to grow with household bulbs a little hack is to cut off the plastic diffusers exposing the bare LEDs. This greatly improves light intensity and throws a more downward beam which eliminates the hassle and cost of using reflectors.

doing that can expose electronics that are not meant to be exposed. ie can cause electrocution or fire if shorted, the diffuser is also how these bulbs are able to get the light as spread out and generally useful as they are, if you are gonna cut diffusers just use directional bulbs instead and leave them sealed so nothing bad can happen, cause if it can it just tends to happen, its the way shit is, maybe not to or for you but for sure someone you told to do it know this
@@twistedsocal All important points I should've mentioned. Yes, the bare boards on many household LEDs are going to have exposed points with 110 AC and they absolutely will shock you if you're grounded. No different than a live wire.
Still, it's a viable way to make something virtually useless actually work decently for growing though. Perhaps not the best idea for anyone who doesn't understand or respect electricity.
@@harrypeterson9287 my bad wasn't trying to state the obvious but now a day so many people seem to be runner up for the Darwin awards so i felt it prudent to point out that decapping lights will make them a hazard and also make them far less tolerant to high humidity and moisture. I'm sure just by saying that, we prevented at least one house fire and possibly a death by electrocution. or so is the goal,

He seems to know what he's talking about and I've tried it multiple times over the last few years on different bulbs. Only trouble I ever had was one bulb that started flickering but there's nothing to indicate the flickering was related to the removed defuser. The defuser is just a plastic done, the actual LED is pretty robust, ie outdoor LED lights can get water in them and still work 🤷♂️ You wouldn't be using grow lights in an environment they'd be in much danger of damage if you're not reckless.
Do your own research obviously but quick tip is squeezing the diffuser in a vice makes it pop off fairly easy vs trying to cut or saw it off.

If you mix warm and cool light you will get a good spectrum ,use warmer lights for flower closer to sun set tone the better ❤
My main issue is the cost/benefit. Grow lights are massively over-priced, and I don't think most people, even those who use standard house lights, believe you can get as good of results with those as you can with grow lights; It's just that if you can get good enough results for your needs, the cost becomes a big factor. For example, aquariums can have fairly affordable lighting, at least until you get to basically ANY of the spot lights, which is the lighting I prefer. Those things are like a hundred dollars bare minimum just because they have the "aquarium light" label. Instead, I use cheap GE outdoor 90w flood leds with the caps popped off; These lights have a second lens touching the diodes such that with the diffuser removed, they become spot lights that grow well even at a 3 to 4 foot distance. Of course most of my plants are shade plants, and I get a bit of (very diffused) natural lighting, so that helps. Even if I needed two or three times the amount of cheap lights to equal the more expensive ones for par, it may well be worth it. The more expensive ones are mostly for all the bells and whistles, appearance of both the fixture and light temp, and yes, slightly better plant or coral growth (based on what I've heard at least; they're out of my price range). And don't even get me started on the rest of the aquarium industry...
i can highly recommend the 23 watt 2700k micro spiral CFLs from Sylvania. I've never had too much luck with any household LED. You could try them out and give a review for the folks on a budget.

Remove the plastic Dome! Run 3000k and some 5000 k.

@@humblegrowthjust run a knife along the edge of the dome several times to loosen the cylicon glue and then use the knife as a lever. It's a bit hard, but doable.
Agreed!!! I have had success with both household LED bulbs that were decapped and regular/high output CFL's growing cannabis. You just have to make sure to run several different wavelengths.
That being said, nothing made my plants explode with denser buds like a strong 2000W King LED light. You will not be able to get heavy and dense buds with household LED's, but you can grow very decent buds!

My next grow involves the following- I plan on using a total of 8 lights. 8- 4 Footers. One set is adjustable between 3000- 4000- 5000k, also the wattage is adjustable between 55 and 75. The other set which is primarily for vegetative, runs 40 w 6500k. In the middle part of the growing both of the sets will be on. I have faith that this will work well I cannot type down the entirety of this plan here LOL

Help! Is 'full spectrum' the same as 5000k? Can a 'full spectrum' bulb actually have a lower Kelvin number? I believe that even a 5000k build can have a narrow spectrum of light - if it is measured with a spectrometer, which I don't have. I am trying to light my painting studio in the best way... not growing plants. The difficulty is that daylight and 5000k may look the same to our human eyes but they will render color very differently. Any suggestions? - confused in Washington.
This works. I've had so many successful grows. Besides the led bulbs, the last grows i used a few huge CFL bulbs on the sides of the plants, both for vegging and for flowering.
I have used 6400k LED bulbs to start seedlings for the past 6 years. Before that I used Daylight 6400k CFL lamps, but the arrival of the cheap LED bulbs, together with a good drop in power used, pushed me to try them. My main crop is superhot chillies that require a long growing season, so I sow early in the New Year, so that the weather outside has stabilised to 10c at night, and the plants are ready to move into bigger pots in my little greenhouse. I see no deficiencies in the plants, and they thrive in our living room until it's time to go outside.
Okay where is everyone finding their 6500K LED bulbs from? The best I've found are 5000K

Hey man, you know those Philips first gen CFL lights You mentioned? I just took one out of a lamp in my shop after 20-some years and replaced it with one of those filament LEDs that uses 1/4 the power but is 5x as bright, lol
Does it work to use spotlight lamps?
I have a light fixture in my kitchen that holds 5 spotlight lamp bulbs and they become pretty hot when they have been on for a while. They are warm white with kinda bare fronts so you can see the diods. Does this work or should I invest in a real growlight instead?

Hey, Thank you so much for the Sub! so, to answer your question. With the high power output (21000 lumens=150 watts = APX 60-100Umols) The lettuce should grow. I don't think your growth will be anything thing to write home about as far as speed goes. But maybe teamed with the tower garden, I could be wrong. The 10 feet away is what worries me more. At that distance you would be seeing a fraction of the photon density that you would at say 1 to 2 feet away. You will get that 60-100umols at 1-2 feet, but at 10 feet I'd guess you would receive more like 10umols. Which might not be enough for an entire tower. Unless I just misunderstood you and you were saying the lights will be 10 feet from each other, in which case, go for it Elijah! Your Kelvin being 5000k should be just right for leafy greens, so your in good shape there. 👍
@Humble Growth Hydroponics Thank you for taking the time to reply! The towers are 5 ft tall, and the lights are 5 ft from the ground, so the towers are separated from the lights by 5 ft. Would you suggest I bring the lights closer?
@@elijahbrown7038 Since you are lighting an area rather than a single plant, it might be better to keep the light a little further away so that it can distribute even light to all the plants. Still though, I would move it as close as you can while still lighting the entire area. hope that helps :)

I have a quick question. I live in a house built in 1958 and there isn't very good natural light. The windows in my bedroom for, instance, are 18in x 30in and there are 3 of them. one on either side of my bed and one in a coved part of my bedroom (my house has an odd roofline). I want to install light panels or something similar to make it look like there are more windows than there are. Will regular LED light panels be ok, or do I need to create my own using specific LED lights? I am a plant lover and really want to have them in every room, but as it stands they are all in or close to the picture windows in my living & dining room. I know this video is over a year old but I am hoping you might still answer. Thank you!!

I have a pothos and a tradescantia if I leave it near a open window with no direct sunlight will they still do ok in the room. I have them and also have a lot LED bulbs. I just want big plants. Any tips.
Lol, I used 6 regular bulbs and the buds were airy and foxtails everywhere. And the potency was little to non existent. But it was fun.😊
Im currently using fecida 65w 600l and they cost 65€ and have full spectrum Red deepred and bleu so they are doing great! It's great it used a minimum of electric and have no heat on thé led and have iron casing and have vent build in!? Amazing i say that we used to use 2000w lights in thé past..

I have grown dense huge buds using 100 watt equivalent with mixed spectrums 3000 and 5000. I grew a plant that it's main cola was a half ounce so these lights work best in closets and best in grow cabinets and grow box's. They must be close for good results.

Walmart and Amazon have 7 way splitter sockets for about 10 each. Just screw it in the socket like a normal bulb and then screw 7 bulbs into it. Takes up less than a square foot of space. I just bought 3 and I plan on using a mixture of LED's in each one. Also, Temu has good prices for LED lights. I ordered 6 of the supposed 2000 watt folding garage bulbs. They use about 30 watts in reality but are a good source of side lighting and they have 3000k and 6500k versions for about $10 each. I ended up with a $30 price adjustment refund on my order for 6 of them. Some of the larger foldable LED's for about $15 put out 25,000 lux. I'm getting 10k lux with these up close and the lights stay cool to the touch. Connecting 4 foot LED shop-lights are great for seedlings and clones. I also use them as side lighting for the lower branches and they really do a good job. My 12 cubic foot closet it at 40,000 lux and 3600-4000 foot candles from just Led's. None of them cost me over $60. All of my HID lights are sitting in boxes as relics but I may pull them out for the last few weeks of flowering for an extra kick. Apple Betty, Glookies, Wedding Cake, Runtz Muffin, DosiDo #33, Skittlez, Mimosa Evo, Fruity OG Kush and Fat Bastard are the flowers I'm growing and breeding with. Not to forget freakshow is what I've crossed all of the others with. F2 seeds from any of these will grow 75% normal looking weed and 25% will have the freakshow leaf mutation. If you take a mutant and breed it to another mutant with the recessive gene active, all of those seeds will make mutant plants. So F3 seeds will all look like the Freakshow strain. Cross one with a regular strain and you'll have to repeat the entire process to make that cross mutant. Reading the first half of Genetics for Dummies taught me what was going on with my webbed leaf strain. Later found out it's Frisian Ducksfoot strain and we couldn't figure out why only some of the plants had the webbed leaves. Then I read about Mendellan genetics and easy peezy! P.S. I have a Ducksfoot hybrid (with Flo, G-13, Blueberry, Cinderella 99 and Runtz Muffin stabilized) pollinated by Freakshow. I'm at F1 now and all of the seedlings look normal as expected, but f2 something special is on the way with 25% being a freakshow and 25% Ducksfoot and 1 in 16 seedlings having both recessive genes fully expressed. From there I take a Superfreak female and clone it. Sex reverse one for female pollen and all of those resulting seeds will have both mutations expressed and the seeds feminized! The police saw my grow room and the Freakshow male and loved it! They thought that fucked up looking thing was some funny shit. With what I have invested you better believe I don't screw around with lighting and I choose LED's.

I have a full spectrum led light. i have both the veg an bloom on 100%. I used an app called Photone and it shows my light temperature is 12,000k. I understand there is a difference between the color spectrum and the color temperature. For a seedling or a plant in Veg, is there any harm to come from running at 12,000k?

It's not the size of the grow light, it's how well it penetrates the canopy that matters.

Where can I find tube grow lights that are plastic? i purchased a HydroDesign hydroponic system. It came with 4 Sunco light bulbs. Setup of the system, i broke a light bulb in my hand, so I would like to replace them with plastic bulbs. I have another system that came with plastic tube light bulbs.

If I use a growth lightbulb to grow my plants do I need a special light fixture to attach to the lightbulb in order for the growth light to work or could I simply attach the growth light bulb to a regular light fixture that I already have at home?
Simply use what you already have. Any led light emits synthetic photons that stimulate photosynthesis. So, you can use any bulb and light outlet. The important thing to consider is the light frequency (color, or also called light temperature). I made a video all about light color that will hopefully help. :)

Is there a difference between a regular household 60 watt light bulb vs the daylight 60 watt daylight light bulb which brightness is 760 lumens. These are fairly new on the market.

Yes absolutely
It really depends on what type of plants you are growing. I've found that 6000k-6500k color temperature works best on plants. I have lots of those LED household bulbs and the defusers can easily be twisted off, if the bulbs are 7w or over at 6500k with the defuser cap removed there not too bad. I've been using these to grow Pothos "devils Ivy" and they work good for that. They have also been good for some other house plants.
HPS is what all the commercial growers use in all countries for flowering and fruiting crops. SO the PROVES you 100% WRONG.
@@GMT439 I've had no issues and I did say it depends on what plants you grow so read comments fully before responding. Yes fruiting crops require much stronger light intensity. I grow lower light tolerant houseplants such as Pothos etc.
GU10 LED spotlights have recently developed to produce over 900 lumens at 6w. Very efficient, and currently available on Amazon with a bit of searching. A number of these can be mounted in a neat array using a variety of such bulbs from 5000k to 6500k for vegetation, or 2700k to 4000k (plus a few deeper reds if you can find them) for flowering. Obviously, it's a bit trickier removing the lenses from these bulbs. GU10 holders can be purchased in large quantities at a moderate cost too.
What do you think about normal house light bulbs for growing mushrooms they only require light for directional growth they don't photosynthesize

Sounds like a great experiment... Here's what I've been thinking and workshopping; 10 gallon aquarium on the bottom with a log cut in half, doused with spores then filled with dense fog once an hour for 15 min. on the bottom of the lid I put led strip lights that I can adjust the color of. on the top of the lid, plants with their roots in the fog. @@humblegrowth it does work.. I grow mushrooms. Any light source will trigger mushroom pinning. I just haven't tried complete Cycles under regular LED house lights. I'm sure it'll work mushrooms require the blue spectrum of light

Would grow lights encourage mildew growth?
Not mildew, but algae. Mildew thrives in dank, dark places. Algae loves dank light places. Lucky algae is not harmful to you (it's actually healthy if consumed properly) unlike mildew which can turn into mold and become harmful to humans and animals. The main difference being, mildew is a fungus, with spores (eventually grouping together to create mold) the spores are what are dangerous to breath. Algae is a organism, just like us, similar to the single cell organisms that all life originated from. Regardless, you don't want either in your garden, so avoid light on your wet places, and dank warm dark places.

It's hard to say, but it seems like there is a lack in photon density. The sun releases photons that have been making their way out of the core, through plasma then travel 8 light seconds to earth and hit plants in the trillions. Photons are the result of colliding atoms in the center of the sun and contain all the energy we get from the sun. The plants have evolved and adapted to need a particular wavelength of photons for photosynthesis. Household led bulbs create photons through electroluminescence which cannot fully replicate the sun's wavelength of light. Full spectrum grow lights use several different frequencies of light to replicate it the best. House hold leds just can't quite do it. Tbh I created this video to encourage people to use full spectrum grow light bulbs instead, but it totally backfired and now everyone wants to know why it isn't working well for them... short answer, photon density in the proper wavelength cannot be achieved with household leds. This is why your plants are growing slowly, they can't fully trigger photosynthesis. Hope that helps... or maybe confuses you more... sorry
Your plants won't flower without the proper wavelength and photon density. This means you will need a lot more bulbs (like 10) at a "warmer" frequency (red light) for flowering. You will likely need several more lights to even trigger photosynthesis to get to flowering. Or you can buy a couple full spectrum grow light bulbs from Amazon and get there for sure. Hope this helps
@@humblegrowth yes I understand I'm also providing them 5-6 hours of sunlight plants growth is slow but it's growing I'm seen every pair of leaves after 4-5 days. But I really can't afford grow lights so hoping it grows in these critical situation actually it is the bcn critical its tough strain

I've had success in the past with cfl's in both 2700k and 6500k, from start to finish, though I didn't grow a large crop. Just what would fit in a 40 gal garbage can. 😁 I am trying to piece together a "very budget minded" set up with led's in 6500k. I'm just looking to start a few plants for outdoors, but being in a northern climate I will need to start them indoors until mid/late May. I don't think I'll be doing any flowering indoors so I'm just focusing on vegging... We'll see what happens later on, but for now I'm not looking to invest much into elaborate systems.
Excellent! Your on the right track, using "Cooler" light during early growth then almost all "warm" light during flowering. Should do the trick if you can get the photon density high enough. It really all depends on what you are growing. Using a 6500k would be a good overall light temperature, 5000k or even 4500k would offer a little more red light. Growing with a 6500k would give you a healthy, leafy, slightly bushy plant. The buds/harvest will likely be less than what you would get with more red light because red wavelengths stimulate photosynthesis more than any other. I would recommend starting with your 6500k then adding, switching, or using color changing bulbs to achieve closer to 2000k-4000k during flowing.
@@humblegrowth ya. I don't plan to flower with 6500k. Idk if I'm going to try flowering any inside the house or not yet. We'll see what happens when we get there... I am looking at possibly getting a ts1000 or similar. I just have to be mindful of the power bill.
Ive a buddy who gets 60g out of 1sq ft from 33w house 2700k led and 15w blurple.
Its a mini steath cupboard. So they do work better than most pro growers realise. But it just requires very driextes light inna tight space.

Absolutely, that is a great idea to create your own full spectrum lighting environment 😀 👌
How about cutting the tops off and putting 3 100w equiv. Led bulbs at a ratio to 3-3000k 1- 2700- 2 6000k veg and 4 3000k 1- 6000k and 1-2700k bud cycle and with this ratio you would get a very realistic spectrum and as for photon density. Make it 50 w /ft2. Is that not the optimum amount that is required for a top notch lighting system. Do this and you will have a serious good system only lacking uv/low red spectrum. 75 bulbs in a 5x5 and that will set you up with all the light to have a terrific grow for $300 or less! Throw a 400w hps in the mix at week 4 of bud if ya really want excellent trichome production. You can manufacture a light with a consistent 1500mmols/ on a 5x5 and with Mylar walls you can go 6x6. $300 to light a 6x6 is cheap and you can make smaller but just follow the 50w/ft2. Rule. tbh I'm no professional, but managed to grow marijuana with a singular 150w white led light (more on the blue light spectrum instead of red) and some periodic sunlight in windowsill it works fine, I'm in the northern hemisphere with a west facing window so i get the afternoon sunlight. covered 3 square foot 70 cm away from canopy of plants
It still bothers me a bit that all people who want me to buy grow lights are people who sell grow lights. But your explanations about the light spectrum were really interesting.

I grow tomatos with 30w 6000k floodlights with no problem. Absolutley no daylight what so ever and $10 a piece
you need about 10 led bulbs without the plastic covers be careful it can shock you if you touch them

With basic led bulbs growth will seriously blow, period, not enough spectrum available also, you can grow to finish without dedicated red spectrum, I used to grow with just metal halide hid bulbs, very blue, and it just results in denser buds etc, red is optimal but not a must to flower
Do you think a plant would grow better with a 5000 Kelvin or a 2700 Kelvin bulb watt for watt
@@slicktmi you know, watt for watt still isn't gonna be a defining metric here. Watt per watt LED outputs more lumens per watt than any other light source but has some of the worst penetration ability of any lighting source. Also, sticking to a single kelvin color temp only works for LED nothing else is that specific. Sure light bulbs claim to be of a certain kelvin but they have spikes in many more than just the one they claim sooo growing with an hid vs a fluorescent vs a compact fluorescent vs a cheap led vs something grow specific such as a spider farmer or a gavita pro (I don't even know if gavita makes good LED grow lights but their de hid setups are next to none) sooo if your asking if a fluorescent bulb will grow as well as an hid the answer is hell no, same with most led setups, no but at least with the high end LED setups they cover the needed spectrums. Still in my experience, de hid metal halide bulbs mixed with de hps bulbs in a 40 mh 60 hps setup throughout the entire grow will net the most yield and potential sweetness (think potency here if cannabis is your crop) if you leave out the blue side or the mh you will still grow large buds but not as dense nor as potent and will stretch the plant more. I prefer the closer internodal spacing and thicker main stock of a plant so it can support more weight and in turn will fruit more
@@slicktmi also if you are talking kelvin then you are just sticking to perceived color spectrum and typically the more orange/yellow red side of things yields more but, the blue is far superior in early growth pre flower so flower 2700 5k for pre flower just how it works, still led with high enough lumen can cause light bleaching if too close and still fail to penetrate for crap unless you do some serious pruning. But I have seen some led setups yield more than any hid setup I'm sure strain makes a huge difference as does the ability to keep the grow area cooler but I have seen nearly 3lbs per light off of a spider farmer vs 2.5 average off of gavita de hps. Don't have large scale mixed hid knowledge just smaller boutique grows with mixed hid and or using cmh or plasma setups. Never seen plasma used large scale but I could imagine it could do some rad shit since it is the closest thing we have to sun light in doors but the heat is a killer
@Josh Hall so when you say leds have a hard time penetrating are you talking like deep into the canopy or talking about the leaf itself saying that its not penetrating the leaf enough to photosynthesize?
@@slicktmi oh hell no the LED setups available today have killer abilities as far as growing like I said I have seen larger yields from high end (think 1k a light) setups per light than out of literally any other light source to date, I am guessing a large portion of that is the frequency tuned aspect of LED in general, they are very specific and not what could be considered full spectrum but if you add other wavelength LEDs to the array then you can quite literally tune a fixture to a point that just is not even kinda possible with any other tech available today. The catch is, different plants need different spectrum availability and most grow lamps are most definitely designed for growing cannabis since it is the ultimate cash crop (if you can afford the licenses and permits etc or if you don't mind still working grey market lol but you do you) point is if you want the same results with food crops I doubt that you can find fixtures tuned for specific crops so general tuning or cannabis tuning is the option, great if your growing tomatoes. Not so great for many other crops at least not from where I stand. As far as the LED ability to penetrate I simply mean to undergrowth so anything below the top canopy. Secondary canopy or u der growth suffers, granted it always lacks adequate light but at least with other tech there is enough reflected light to allow under growth to be productive and not make it mandatory to lollipop your crops. The way people grow now, veg is such a short deal, think a week to maybe 3 and right on to flower if grown from clone (gotta keep the killer genetics going and why wait for new seedlings when you can have foot tall babies in 7 days with clonex gel and foliar super thrive feeding sooo simple. So fool proof and sooo much time saved. Anyhow scrog or sog are a thing that has far out paced full term veg and low height plants going into flower with single bud sites can majorly benefit from LED where under growth and secondary canopy are not a thing. Ok I have rambled long enough sorry hope I answered you somewhere in here l

House hold led bulbs are the way to go, there cheap effective and they last for years, if you say they don't work, you have not tried them, you need to take the plastic dome off and you need to keep them about 12" above the plants, so if you want to cover a 4ft x 1ft you need to use 6 x 13w bulbs

For sure, high pressure sodium lighting is great for large scale production. You are absolutely right. But this video is more for people who want to keep there herbs, greens and houseplants alive just using lights they already have. If you watch the video, you see my skepticism as I always recommend using full spectrum grow lights. But the question is can you use household leds and the answer is actually yes.
Thats why you put the bulbs on a board and create a bigger foot print

BUT HOW MANY LIGHTS DO YOU NEED? I Currently run 2 outdoor floodlights and 3 softwhite LED... they're all LED.
That's a tough question for me to answer because of all the unknown variables that will effect the necessary light requirements. Like; how many plants are you growing? What plants are you growing? What is the distance from the plant to light? And what is the power output ?(wattage of your led light bulbs) if I knew those answers I could give you a more detailed and definitive answer. However I will say with a fair amount of certainty, I doubt that you can have too many standard leds on your plants. Due to the low ppfd (like maybe 10pfd at 12inches) you could put 10 lights on your plants and just barely hit the power output of a decent 100watt grow light. Hope that helps 🙏
Generally 150-180w is good enough for a 2x2 16" away from canopy
