I never want to drive I-81 if there is a winter storm forecast. Back in the early 70s I knew a guy coming home from FLA in March who got stranded on there with 2ft of lake effect snow south of Watertown and spent 48hrs in a church basement around Parish as memory serves with his family until the road was open. During winter nowadays I tend not to go further than 2hrs drive from home and stay off the 4 lane hwys.
Tire Pressure: My tires went down just a ton - tricky to fill. 32 dropped to 24 psi .. it was -24C .. and it gets stored at like +17C. So I did 37psi and it settles at about 28-31 when I'm out driving.
My pressure washers never freeze even though they stay in the out building all the time. I just hook up a hose adapter to the inlet with a funnel to pour Anti-Freeze into it, pull it over a few times with the spark plug disconnected, when Anti-Freeze squirts out the pressure side it is good for below freezing, but that is how Northerners have been doing it for years, Southern folks would of course not know these tricks, Winter means freezing so always freeze proof your stuff.
I keep meaning to watch for the right place to share this so I'll do it here. I know you've talked about chevy's problems with their abs system with a warning to "service ESC" system. Well my 09 malibu did that but it would go away. Then it started down shifting whenever it wanted to. After a lot of searching, I found a reference to SB #09-06-03-004D that calls for applying dielectric grease to every single electrical connection in the car. So far I've done every computer and the rear fuse box and believe it or not I have not had any of the above issues again. Second was an intermittent misfire on cylinder 3. Scanned and monitored many times but couldn't find it. Ran all the typical mechanical tests and all was well. Couldn't get it to miss by myself in the garage until it finally got bad enough that pulling on the #3 coil harness would cause it to miss and pushing it would clear it up. That connector was pulled so tight I could hardly get it unplugged so it had slowly been breaking one small wire. Spliced in a replacement and no more miss. Hope this helps you or one of your viewers! Have a safe trip!

used to live in chattanooga, moved to washington recently. enjoy living in TN again Scotty! On a note about snow, we recently got a lot of it and the little 91 civic I just picked up took it like a champ, even in the freezing rain on the melting and then refreezing snow drifts. FWD Seemed to fair pretty well.

Hey Scotty, You're always giving us helpful tips to make our cars last longer.I have a tip for you regarding preventing a pressure washer from freezing and being trash in the Spring when you go to use it.Always pour RV antifreeze into your intake hose port, ( use a short piece of hose and a funnel), and with the gas engine off- Pull the starter rope several times until you see the reddish color of the antifreeze on the ground.Also, pour the antifreeze into the wand to keep it from freezing.Drain the extension hose so that it doesn't freeze. You mentioned storing the PW in the house near the furnace to keep it warm.This only works with an electric PW, as to do so with a gas powered unit go blow the house apart when the gas vapors meet the pilot light of MR. FURNACE!
I know you was traveling I-75 and you should have got off at the 127 exit in Georgetown Kentucky and drove around the Toyota / Lexus plant. You would have been amazed at the size of that thing. They have the engine plant. They have the original factory that start out only making the Camry then they have plant 2 that used to make the Avalon but I'm not sure what they make there now unless they turn that into the Lexus plant. It's been years since I've been there working on the dock unloading North American receiving parts but I've been all over the plant including the test track. I actually drove an E-Z-Go cart, sodas, meat trays, cheese trays and veggie trays for a function that they had there. Toyota even has their own wildlife conservation team because it was built on farmland and is still surrounded by it. It's not uncommon to see deer out there and even seagulls that arrive via the train coming from California Idk if they still offer tours or not but if they do and you get a chance it's an amazing experience.

Been having problems with my 2014 jeep compass. Basically the whole front end needs to be rebuilt. I took it to big O because I was having serious problems. Traction control and the abs were acting up and it put the car in limp mode, wouldn't go over 20mph. It was the front passenger wheel bearing. Anyway I took it to big o, they wanted like 7k to rebuild the whole front end. They wanted 1000$ just to do the wheel bearings on the front, just for the parts, no labor. I said no to all of that and had them change my back brakes, limped my car home at 20mph, bought a whole wheel hub assembly with the bearing already in it put together so it's just bolt on basically 200$ also put a new lower control arm in because the ball joint was shot. Now my car runs fine or it did until I noticed a humming noise coming from the back brakes that big o just did. The back driver side brake was smoking, smelled like I was just on the race track. I say all this just to say chain shop mechanics are a scam, do it your self
Tip: Check the weather along your route before you leave, and adjust your routing if possible, if needed to avoid major snow storms. An app called Highway Weather is a good tool to have.
Its cosmic Scotty, I almost bought a 700 watt electric bike. I'll wait til Spring and see which is best. No grandkids yet, but when they come along I will be able to ride along with them when I'm 70 ten years from now. I can't picture peddling a bike then, my joints are pretty worn out, and old injuries come back if I twist the wrong way; so an electric bike would be a " practical" thing to buy.

Just watched your video on "resetting" the computer in my truck, which hadn't run in a couple of months and didn't like my 400 Amp battery charger. Two years ago, I paid a local garage $165.00 to do the same thing. But I did get a B.S. song and dance about the procedure. By the way, we're not too far from Buffalo & I am from Niagara County (Lewiston.) Thanks for the advice & saving me a bundle.

Scotty, I've got a 2013 Taurus SHO. Heater randomly cuts off. Especially in cold weather. Does not do this with the AC blowing. I have run it this way for two years now and it always starts right back up after I use the steering controls or screen interface. Thanks.

You're always giving us helpful tips to make our cars last longer.I have a tip for you regarding preventing a pressure washer from freezing and being trash in the Spring when you go to use it.Always pour RV antifreeze into your intake hose port, ( use a short piece of hose and a funnel), and with the gas engine off- Pull the starter rope several times until you see the reddish color of the antifreeze on the ground.Also, pour the antifreeze into the wand to keep it from freezing.Drain the extension hose so that it doesn't freeze.
You mentioned storing the PW in the house near the furnace to keep it warm.This only works with an electric PW, as to do so with a gas powered unit go blow the house apart when the gas vapors meet the pilot light of MR. FURNACE!

I know you was traveling I-75 and you should have got off at the 127 exit in Georgetown Kentucky and drove around the Toyota / Lexus plant. You would have been amazed at the size of that thing. They have the engine plant. They have the original factory that start out only making the Camry then they have plant 2 that used to make the Avalon but I'm not sure what they make there now unless they turn that into the Lexus plant. It's been years since I've been there working on the dock unloading North American receiving parts but I've been all over the plant including the test track. I actually drove an E-Z-Go cart, sodas, meat trays, cheese trays and veggie trays for a function that they had there. Toyota even has their own wildlife conservation team because it was built on farmland and is still surrounded by it. It's not uncommon to see deer out there and even seagulls that arrive via the train coming from California
Idk if they still offer tours or not but if they do and you get a chance it's an amazing experience.

Been having problems with my 2014 jeep compass. Basically the whole front end needs to be rebuilt. I took it to big O because I was having serious problems. Traction control and the abs were acting up and it put the car in limp mode, wouldn't go over 20mph. It was the front passenger wheel bearing. Anyway I took it to big o, they wanted like 7k to rebuild the whole front end. They wanted 1000$ just to do the wheel bearings on the front, just for the parts, no labor. I said no to all of that and had them change my back brakes, limped my car home at 20mph, bought a whole wheel hub assembly with the bearing already in it put together so it's just bolt on basically 200$ also put a new lower control arm in because the ball joint was shot. Now my car runs fine or it did until I noticed a humming noise coming from the back brakes that big o just did. The back driver side brake was smoking, smelled like I was just on the race track. I say all this just to say chain shop mechanics are a scam, do it your self

Its cosmic Scotty, I almost bought a 700 watt electric bike. I'll wait til Spring and see which is best. No grandkids yet, but when they come along I will be able to ride along with them when I'm 70 ten years from now. I can't picture peddling a bike then, my joints are pretty worn out, and old injuries come back if I twist the wrong way; so an electric bike would be a " practical" thing to buy.

Just watched your video on "resetting" the computer in my truck, which hadn't run in a couple of months and didn't like my 400 Amp battery charger. Two years ago, I paid a local garage $165.00 to do the same thing. But I did get a B.S. song and dance about the procedure. By the way, we're not too far from Buffalo & I am from Niagara County (Lewiston.) Thanks for the advice & saving me a bundle.
