New studio looking 🔥 🔥 🔥 . Not sure I have the arts and crafts skills to cut down those stone guards! Must be all that spackling that got you limber. Love the motivation dude!
Man, TH-cam's algorithm was spot on suggesting your video. 1) I'm a runner. 2) I run in Altra Superiors. 3) I'm working on setting up a TH-cam studio in my house. Fastest subscribe of my TH-cam career. Would love a "behind the scenes" video about your studio setup when it's done but I'll definitely stay for the running videos.
I love this update. I wore my new pair for maybe 100km before using them in a trail marathon two weeks ago. In wet and muddy conditions they were outstanding.
@@RyanClaytonFilms that completely contradicts every review I have ever heard about them in wet conditions....I had the 4's and was all over the place on wet rocks
Ryan, just found your channel from Dave Dillion's recommendation. Great channel and great video quality. I post triathlon content but grew up running and ran D1 in collage. Glad I found your channel it's fantastic. Keep up the good work!
Thanks Matt!! That’s awesome, I used to be full on in Triathlon, but that was before I started on TH-cam. I just subbed to your channel, nice work, excited to follow you!
My first Altras where the Superior 2.0 (red). I agree, the Superior are always good on dry conditions. But where I usually run there's always mud and water. For wet stuff my favorite Altras are the King Mt because they have big lugs and vibram rubber. I haven't tried the Olympus yet. It's nice to see that newer Altra models also seem more sturdy. Just got the Timp2.0s to replace my Timp1.0 that started ripping after only 400km.
My favorite Shoe! back in 2015 I ran a 11H 50K jungle mountain trail (in heavy rain) on a beat up Superior 2.5! Yes I sure did! Although its not built for that type of conditions but we just cant be separated. My 3.5 is still going strong and another pair on stock. Ill wait for the 4.5 on sale before jumpin on it
@@RyanClaytonFilms if only they make 2 version of Superior, 1 for hard pack (current) and 1 for wet muddy condition itll be perfect! I heard theyll discontinuing the Kings MT
@@ririemarilyn I was thinking that last time I took the 4.0's on a super technical trail that was wet! If they had a version maybe with a vibram lightbase outsole (hopefully keep the weight similar) that has better grip in wet conditions I would totally go for those even if it was a bit more expensive since it can get wet quite often up in the PNW
Love the superiors, just wish they had better grip :( buffed out trails are ok, but man on any technical trails that are even a little wet these shoes have zero grip :(
You should try the King MT's, very similar shoe with great traction. Made for mud running though, so it's not as comfortable as the Superiors in dry conditions.
That's been my experience with the Superior 4. I like a lot about them but they're super slippery. I find the Lone Peaks to have better grip, which is strange because they use the same outsole MaxTrac material. Maybe it's a little different on the Superiors or maybe it's the lug pattern/spacing? I've been wearing the MadRiver TR by Saucony. I just got them but they feel like a good Altra alternative so far. 4mm drop and wide toe box.
Superiors are a fun shoe. Definitely agree on taking it easy going from maximal to minimal. Altra’s newest versions have been excellent. I just wish they would bring back the stability wedge.... impossible to find anymore in men’s sizes.
Yes this year has been great for the lineup! And yes, gotta take it easy getting into Altra’s that is for sure. I don’t know anything about the wedge, don’t have any experience with that.
I'm torn between the Superior 4.5's vs Hoka Torrent 2...I love Altra's and have worn out numerous pairs of Lone Peak 4.0's (one of my favorite trail shoes in recent memory), I tested a pair of Torrent 1's when they first came out and was not a huge fan of the fit, if you personally had a choice between the two which would you choose?
I've run all my trail runs in superiors since I got my 3.5s, just got some 4.0s on sale but they have some pressure points all around the transition from midfoot to forefoot for me. I'm hoping they will break in a little, my 3.5s have no such issues. The 3.5s I had an issue with the ankle collar rubbing on my ankle bone, but I did a weird lacing trick that kind of fixed that. Since starting running I realize my feet are strange creations that are far from what running shoe companies imagine feet are like. 🤪
Haha I hear ya, here are some shoe companies that I just can’t touch for that reason too. Hope they end up working out for you, they should stretch a little 🤞
I have run in a more minimalist shoe the past several years but was looking at trying the new Olympus for ultra distances. I kept extra shoes (different brands) in drop bags and typically switched after 50 miles or so just to reduce fatigue. The Olympus won't be available in my size until 8/24 but you mentioned these (Superior) would be good for ultras. What shoe did you run your 100 milers in? Thoughts on longer races between these and the Olympus? Would be nice to complete a race in just one pair of shoes.
Yeah I’ve done a few 50 milers in superiors. You definitely need to be used to minimal shoes for that to work. All my 100’s have been in Olympus and the last one I did was one pair of shoes and one pair of socks. Never switched, it was glorious 👌
It all depends on how you treat them and what type of runner you are, but I can always get at least 250 miles from Altra’s before they start to need to be replaced
Yeah, they have lugs because they are aimed at dryer trails and allowing you to really have a great ground contact. I don't know about losing the traction at 200-250, I only run trails with my trail shoes and they don't see much wear at that mileage, I guess everyone is a little different though. I'd try to King MT's if you are looking for a more minimal feel with really good traction.
It’s part of the Red Team kit, so you can apply to be on it next year, applications are in December I believe. Follow them on social media and you’ll be in the know.
I would agree if it was a gimmick, but it's actually a (marketing) fact. It refers to the wide toe box, so the shoe actually looks like a foot...more than others anyway :)

@@RyanClaytonFilms Thanks! I'm also adding to the list above: 4) You're based in Indiana, like me. (I'm in Greenwood).
I also love the fact that you can take them on pavement to trail also without killing the outsole
