Just picked up the trombone after a 16 year absence and forgot how much I had loved playing

excellent, Paul..I've been on the bone for 58 years and emphasizing tone quality/long tones/ volume control is a bone player's first order of business

You should write a book called " How to play Trombone so people will like you". I want to be able to play ballads and somber songs. How do I get there. My tone is good but how do I get to be more emotional and smoother.

These comments are all 8-9 years old. I'm trying this in 2023 and this warm up/exercise works good for me. Thanks!

With your playing level, in a few years you'll definitely break onto the studio scene in LA. There's no way someone as talented as you wont get picked up. If your sightreading is as good as your trombone playing, you'll be making bank playing on movie soundtracks and tv shows and all that. All bout them residual checks.

Wonderful teaching video. Your students are lucky and their parents should see this to know what they are getting. Isn't that the Huntington Rose Garden? Is this a recent video?

I assume you mean double-tonguing? use different syllables that provide the same tongue action as "Tu-Ku" (pronounced with soft letters (tuh-kuh)) You practice this without the horn, start slow and you eventually speed it up and can tongue for longer. Tu-ku, Du-gu Ti-ki Ta-ka are what I use, they each can be used in different situations for different expressions. For trombone Bob McChesney has som good recording and if you want to hear another great, check out Al hirts Green hornet on trumpet

I like it that everything you prescribe agrees with what I already am doing! And I have a question: Somewhere I saw a cat tell a story about how Tommy Dorsey never practiced, and his way of warming up was just to blow air through the horn a few times, without sound. It seems that would only warm the horn itself, or was there more to it? Can anyone enlighten me?
