Design your own warm ups based on what you already know from other trombonists or your band director, or books. Write them on 3X5 cards, one each. Then each day randomly draw a card. Do that warm up. Get through the stack before you put the card back into the stack.

I saw Marshall Gilkes perform last night at the Univ. Of Oregon. Amazing. I am more convinced than ever that a rigorous daily fundamentals work out is essential to getting anywhere close to his level of playing. No one can force a musician to hit it every day. So musicians have to develop systems of self discipline. There is no better way than quantitative goal setting.

Adding on to this video-I found that saying the vocal harmony names (do,rey,mi,fa,so,etc.)in your head helps your scales and pitches tremendously and begins an advanced way of playing an instrument (by ear)

2:41 I use this exact warm-up. Went through a lot of different procedures over the years, but this one I find to have the best results. Long tone pedals... loosens everything up, and also gets your breath support working. Highly recommend it!

Great video! I have something to add though, 'cause I feel this is super overlooked. Before I even pick up the horn and play, I do a few breathing exercises. Before and after I do breathing exercises, it's like night and day when I play a difficult piece that requires a lot of endurance and a lot of air. If I don't do breathing exercises for just a few minutes before my warm-up then playing in general won't be as easy. People from marching band backgrounds might know of these exercises, i.e. the Breathing Gym

What horn and mouthpiece is the guy on the right playing? A very obscure setup coming from an orchestral bass trombonist’s perspective

Great tips, thanks. But it is weird how much the guy on the right days "chops". Is this a normal way to say lips or mouth somewhere in the world? Anyway, I'm off to get some blood to my chops

Here's a question. I've been pro for sixty years....After working very hard (Last two years) to produce our last album GIANT STEPS I developed a problem with aperture. It's like I have grown an extra layer of skin on my embouchure . NO! I hav'nt killed the nerve like Freddy Hubbard. But does anybody have any ideas since I can't find any info on this anywhere. Right now it takes me half an hour + to warm up and even then flexibility is touch and go.
