      They are trying to make the game easier to make it seem like players are getting better. They think this sells, when in reality stiff competition sells.
      This is why any player who chases superteams, or cries for fouls constantly, will never have my respect (not that any of them care, but my 2 cents anyway).

      They are not even insults to begin with. People are getting ejected for just being confused or making the most harmless gestures or getting techs for what it looks like, absolutely no reason which is just refs sacrificing actual good officiating for power. And to top it all off, defense is slowly deteriorating which leads to meaningless 3 point contest and high scoring games record games becoming a daily thing, players flopping like fish and being incredibly soft, and people getting easy free throws while building up their stats it's like everyone in the NBA are just stat padders. The NBA today is just absolutely atrocious. The 90s and 2000s NBA was actually good, and Adam Sipver ruined everything David Stern did corrently.

    I'll always bring up the HUGE changes that have happened to dribbling and what is considered traveling or holding the ball, every single play in todays game would be a foul just 10-15 years ago, not to mention 20+. This video doesn't even come close to showcasing how crazy it is. People act like players are just better at ball handling but in reality the vast majority of it is just that the player in possession of the ball can basically do whatever they want with the ball now giving them much more ability to make crazy plays. Its super interesting looking at all the rules changes for dribbling over the years and seeing breakdowns of what used to be called as travel, highly recommend anybody to look into it.

      the league actually started favoring the offense in 91 by introducing flagrant fouls, 94 you couldnt hand check past the three pt line, 96 allen iverson was getting away with carrys and double dribbles constantly. its 90s stans that hate todays game but dont realize that it was their era that started making offense easier to play. also the games offensive increase isnt about making it more fun to watch or easier for offense, it was to increase more sportsmanship like play. so actually what youre whining about was happening over 30 years ago! in your favorite era you love to dick ride!!!!!!

      I just hate that it’s used as a reason to try and elevate modern players. Like no, it has been used all throughout the modern game. The main defensive changes that occurred were 3 sec and hand checking (the video creator got that part right).

    • @coldsnap5742
      @coldsnap5742 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@izzy031096 It all started with the 1998 lockout.
      Then they removed hand-checking (actually enforcing it this time) in 1999 in a sad attempt to bring fans back by artificially increasing scoring.
      More rule changes were made in the next few years, culminating with the death-blow in 2004...gee, who had just won the title that year?
      Oddly enough, there was a GOOD rule change in that time: the (alleged) legalization of zone defense. Zone should never have been outlawed.
      But in reality, they made it ILLEGAL via introducing the defensive three-second violation.

    • @karimglasgow5518
      @karimglasgow5518 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Narrator's correct that zone was illegal until after 01. The old "illegal defense" violation was basically that - team got caught trying to play zone. The legalization of zone and implementation of defensive 3 secs went hand in hand; the idea was to boost scoring. I remember not quite understanding how that made any sense - and really, it didn't, not for the 2001 NBA - but maybe the league was smarter than I gave them credit for and knew that teams would adjust over time and start prioritizing long distance shooting.
      The "zone" that was being used on Doc, MJ, etc. was a combination of 1) 80s/90s halfcourt floor spacing that allowed defenders to help more easily w/o being far enough away from your actual assignment to get called for it, and 2) flat out illegal defense that didn't get called. Unless you were up against someone like Reggie Miller, perimeter defenders would play like 10 feet off their guy and the refs were good with it. So I mean, you're not wrong that teams played zone before the 01 rule changes, but the narrator isn't wrong about the rule changes.

Players don't play for the fans just themselves. That's why I'm done with pro sports. If its just a business and loyalty respect and the fans dont matter then no reason to watch.

      Maybe offensively they are getting better but I'm sorry you cannot say that they are getting alot better by exploiting the rules of the game itself. How are you supposed to enjoy the game when the games rules are broken non stop all game? You can stop that, you enforce the rules again simple as that. You call every double dribble, every travel and so on.

    • @tiktokformenofculture9753
      @tiktokformenofculture9753 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alyxsatyr3585not “maybe” offensively; it’s clear as day. The lakers as a 9th seed had 4 players score 25+ points yesterday and all of those are CLEARLY more offensively skilled than Smush Parker, Kwame Brown, Kendrick Perkins Eric Snow, Thabo Sefolosha etc. who all played heavy minutes or were starters for playoff teams.

    • @alyxsatyr3585
      @alyxsatyr3585 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @tiktokformenofculture9753 I agree that players are better offensively. But what you can't ignore is the fact that a huge majority of that is due to the huge increase in 3pt shooting, more space on defense, and also as discussed above, the rules being exploited constantly by players. If they called every double dribble and travel and didn't give players points for flopping as well as hand checking and better defense then the scoring would definitely not be as high. I won't argue that players are better offensively but the reason it looks way better is because of those reasons not because of a huge difference in skill.

    • @tiktokformenofculture9753
      @tiktokformenofculture9753 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@alyxsatyr3585 3pt shooting plays the biggest role tho. Way more than the rules, the 3pt shot has made role players an offensive threat to the point where there are no scrubs in the NBA. Flopping doesn’t happen as much as critics say it does nor does it happen most of the time, fouls & free throws are at an all time low. If I search up Lebron flops right now, they will literally show 5 to 8 instances with only 3 of them being clear flops and the flops would be across a thirteen year period. Players don’t flop every game.
      And handchecking has been out of the NBA since the early 2000s. Nobody ever criticizes Kobe for excelling in an era with no handchecking.
      Those things combined do make a difference, but it’s disrespectful when fans make it seem like everything a player does today is null and void because of a soft nba.
      Kobe’s 81= mamba mentality
      Luka’s 73 or Embiid’s 70= signs of a soft nba

    Rodman would be "almost unplayable"? He is the most valuable player of all time. He would be even better today, with managers like Morey that can recognize value. In his era, people didn't understand that 3s, layups, free throws, spacing, gravity, and rebounding have immense value in basketball. They thought SCORING was value (many still do). His defense wasn't even elite, it MIGHT have been above average. His rebounding is so freakishly good that he would be an AMAZING add to the GSW of the recent run. Put him instead of the Zaza or instead of Chris Paul or instead of almost any >5th best player on a recent championship GSW team, and they improve. Massively. That's absolutely disgusting! That's what player value is. Making great(est?) teams even better. I'd rather have someone who creates gravity and can shoot and space plus Rodman on my team than two players who hog lots of possessions and score inefficiently and can't play defense and don't rebound.

Also as a person who had a career as a corporate analyst, I know that you can find anything you want, to suit your narrative in stats if you look hard enough.

    Guys, remember the time when Mt. Mutombo was allowed to wag his finger at opponents after blocking their shots? That was fun to watch! Players were allowed to stare people down after dunking on them! It used to be much tougher to score, especially with drives to the basket, because defenders were allowed to hand-check you and bigs were allowed to man the middle! So, we saw some defense! Some resistance! Now the lane opens up like when Moses parted the Red Sea, you can't touch a guy, there's no big manning the middle, and you have shooters all over the place, which is fine, but could you please bring back hand-checking and allow bigs to man the middle? I don't wanna see any more incidents like when Tim Duncan was tossed outta the game just for laughing! Or when Giannis got a technical just for staring someone down after he dunked on him! These things are ridiculous! Plus load management, plus the past few all-star games being a disgrace to the game! Back in the 90s, I remember being impressed when Richard Dumas and Latrell Sprewell averaged 15 points in their rookie seasons! Now, I hear about 50, 60 and 70 points all the time and I wanna throw up, because where's the defense?

    Regardless of what you think of the officiating, I hate when players argue with the referees. I have *YET* to see an official change his mind on a call after a player is yelling at him. All it does is piss them off and possibly make them want to make iffy calls go the other way. However, I *HAVE* seen players calmly talk to a ref after a call goes against them and - to be honest, I dont know if it really helps - but it seems when they do that, the ref definitely seems more inclined to listen them. This is rare... Players love to argue or be passive aggressive.

    I loved basketball growing up but I felt this change at a domestic and rep ball level in Australia, flopping is a serious tactic, the key is no longer a bruiser type of place, and there seems to be protection of offensive players by the refs especially if they're small. It took all the joy out of the sport for me and I stopped playing a few years ago.
    I really want to see flopping get heavily penalized and roughness return to the game, until then I'll stick to more interesting sports.

    I think the main effect of eliminating hand checking was actually to free up the three point shooters, not the drivers.
    It just took 10 years to figure that out.
    You can't consistently hit a three pointer with a guys hand on your hip (and all those step back moves used to be travels). You can, however, if you are good, hit shots from the mid range.
    If today's league was allowed to play defense like they used to, the number of three point attempts would go down, mid range shots and post ups would go up, and you'd start seeing more defensive and rebounding specialists, such as Rodman, on rosters. If your average offensive player needs a pick to get open, you might as well have a guy like Rodman setting the pick.
