  • Having a running shoe rotation is a great way to ensure that you are pairing the right kind of shoe with the type of run that you've got planned for the day. In this video, I'll talk about how you can start building your shoe rotation, whether you want to have just one running shoe or whether you want to have four or more.

What a helpful video! Wish I knew this 15 months ago when I started running. I have one speed shoe, one max cushion, and four (!) daily trainers. Now I’m just trying to use them up as I have a pretty good idea of where I’m headed rotation wise -> Bondi, Rivera, Endorphin Speed.

  • @David_T

Just a comment: As an older runner I've switched to max cushion shoes (Ride 8, Endorphin Shift) for most of my long runs to cut down on the wear and tear on my legs. Kofuzi is right, these are not really 'fun' shoes and they cost me between 10s to 20s / mile on my pace, but for long runs this isn't an issue. They do reduce the impact, and that is important with a lot of paved trails going from black top to hard concrete, which is the bane of most older runners.

I went exactly the opposite way.
I have started to do a lot of running in minimalist shoes, hoping this would strengthen my tendons and joints and the small muscles in my feet.
So far, so good. I am now in my early 50ies and I am less often injured than I was in my 30ies. "Runners knee" pain has totally disappeared.
Unlike Ko I don't run every day, though. Only 3 times or sometimes only 2 times a week, max. 30km. Perhaps 2/3 in minimalist shoes. I get most of my aerobic fitness through bicycle riding.

Solid introductory video Kofuzi. Currently working a 3 shoe rotation. Novablast 2s for the daily/long, Endorphin Speed 1s for workouts/longer runs I want to push a bit more, and SL20.2s (Heat ready) for rainy Houston days and shorter efforts. I won a pair of Wave Rider 25s in a contest, so I’ll have daily runs covered for a good while. Racing shoe will be next.

Thanks kofuzi, the information was great. I have been running for 8 months and I'm still working on building a rotation. As an ex-hockey player who is a little large, the Nike Zoom Invisibles are my daily trainers and recovery shoes because I can stay relatively injury free. I just ran 23k without and pain at all. My second shoe were Nike Zoom Tempo Next%, but they killed my feet so I just bought the Endorphine Speed 2 for my speed shoes. If they work out as well as my invisibles, I may go to a racer next or buy a daily trainer, use my Speed 2's for races (unofficial) and have a three shoe rotation.

Hey Kofuzi. Great vid here with awesome info. I personally agree on having multiple shoes in the rotation. I have a similar background. I used to only have 1 shoe in the rotation for all my running and even used that 1 shoe for my first marathon. Started doing research and learned more about the different shoes and their purposes and starting expanding on it. Fast forward a few years, I have 5 in my personal rotation right now and co-own a running/outdoor sports store where I can share all the info I have learned and still continue to learn about.

Novablast 2 is an odd beast. You list it here as a daily trainer, and it is a super comfortable shoe for easy days, with a bouncy, fun ride. But it's also a great shoe for tempo runs - yesterday I ran a 20m tempo run, covering exactly 5k and beating a recent 5k race time! The shoe felt like it was helping me along, and I didn't have to think too much about form. You would think with all that foam and bounce the Novablast 2 would be also a great long run shoe, but... nope. At least for me. After 20k, it seems to morph into a kind of squishiness, and I feel like I'm working harder to maintain a 5:00-5:30 km pace. Maybe I will try it again - so many factors are in play during a training season.

I have a 2 shoe rotation. I noticed that the Endorphin Speed fits my running so insanely well that i use it for everything, daily and speed. Then i have a race shoe that i do my long runs, long race pace runs and races in. That RC Elite 2 that i absolutely hate now (after the 20k it's not working for me, too much energy lost, no carbon pop) is extremely cushioned so i might retire that shoe to a severly overpriced max cushion. Dami, I'm in the same boat. I just want to run everything in the Endorphin Speed! But now I'm trying to capture the feeling I get in the Speed in different shoes and runs. Just picked up the Skechers MaxRoad 5 for recovery runs and I found myself smiling after about logging 10 miles😁

@@carlosangalang From all shoe brands, that would be the last one i'd try, but i'll have a look at if i can try them in a store :). For now it's gonna be that RC Elite 2, the shoe that i started out loving and ended up absolutely hating.
But the conclusion is that my 3 shoe rotation would end up being a speed - race - max cush and leave the daily out of it. But i understand that's an expensive rotation where the speed shoe runs burns out quickly.

@@carlosangalang I looked it up and the skechers shoes (at least the new and good ones, like the max chushion 5) are unavailable in Europe, so no luck for me. The metaspeed sky is probably softer but not a high stack of 39/40 mm, but very stif. I would advise you to try the adios pro 2. The RC Elite 2 is the softest shoe ever, not just for carbon plated shoes but probably also from all shoes. That's why i hate it after 20k, it felt at that point like running through mud, and the carbon plate is very mild in there.

For me: Daily, Speed, Trail, and Max Cushion. Plus, I threw in a stability shoe because I had a gift card that was going to waste and got an amazing pair of shoes for like 9 bucks (Asics GT-1000). All of them have different stack heights and different drops, so besides having alternate applications for various runs, I can pick the type of support and responsiveness I am seeking to try and avoid injury.

A great and needed video in this giant forest of shoes. I LOVE running shoes and have watched copious reviews. I now have 11 models (2 are trail) and 13 pairs since I have 2 doubles of my favs. No regrets. I buy clearance 90% of the time which helps on the budget. The goal of the future now that i have learned what I like or don't like is to narrow it down to the 4 model rotation--- 5 since I do light trails---love my Hoka Challenger ATR 6's and the Torrent. I don't plan such a wide range in the future. My future dream team would be the Novoblast 2, Endorphin Speed (?), ASICS Metaspeed Sky, and most likely the Max Road 5 due to good shoe, great price. (Currently, I also have the Bondi 6) I have all these shoes now except my carbon plate is the Endorphin Pro. See you on the livestream Ko. Sorry to be so long winded but I am a "shoe addict." 12 step program please? :-)

Thx, as a triathlete I think I don't really have much need for a recovery shoe (yet) as recovery is often done on the bike. However, that 3 shoe rotation with tempo/workout and race shoe makes sense to me. I currently only have a daily trainer and a race shoe, but the tempo sessions are really hard on my daily trainer, and the race shoe only comes out a week before the race.

Sadly, it has been impossible to buy the Endorphin Speeds here in Brazil for months... I've put 500+km on mine and the outsole is starting to really show some serious wear... Rebels are also fantastic! I can even do long Runs on them, because of the soft ride. But the durability is an issue.

After comparing the Speed and the Pro in the long runs though, the Speed feels like a safer bet for me in the marathon distance. The Speed will be taking a "tempo + threshold + racing" multi roles for me, and the Pro has been reassigned for road intervals. The carbon plate feels bit stiff for me in the long distance.

Just retired Brooks G19 so I’m back to not having a very plush slow/recovery shoe, but I enjoyed that one and would consider an updated version in the future. Meanwhile, some of the above can cover that and perform double duty as many running shoes do these days. My biomechanics don’t seem to have gotten along with very high stack shoes with no ground feel, nor with carbon plates, not that I haven’t tried to get along with several of them 😔 (I’m not counting Takumi Sen7 as part of my rotation because it’s very specialized, mostly for track work) Martha
