I think the Y/N characters are a reflection of the authors themselves. The author's obsession with the band/celeb is a form of escapism from their own life. Maybe the shaming other girls and hating on more feminine qualities is a projection of their own real-life struggles. The authors of these books are possibly being bullied by girls or just feel like an outsider in their social circles, so their internalized hatred and insecurity comes through via their made-up characters.

I hate the romanticization of toxic relationships in media it’s easy to get roped into this idea that an intense back and forth relationship is romantic and passionate. Also a comment on the “long blonde haired slutty girl” I was that girl in high school and the amount of slut shaming and bullying that goes on when you are the one getting male attention I feel was never touched on. That kind of bullying can really mess up your view on yourself and how relationships should be.
I hate how the MC thinks that they can “change” the bad boy/their abuser into better people. Shit like that will make young and impressionable teens think that if they stay in an abusive relationship longer, it’ll hopefully get better.
I'm a little late on this but a book called "the girl he left behind" breaks this stereotype. It's from the perspective of the "slutty" girl. Absolutely amazing. It's on Wattpad

I have been reading fanfiction for more than a decade and I have to say a lot of things have changed since the time we read fanfics as teens. Nowadays writers put a lot of effort into the characters and the depiction of their mental health and struggles we can all relate to. Relationships between characters are realistic however there can be a lot of angst. I remember reading 'Broken' (HP fanfic) and crying throughout the whole thing. Fanfics can also provide a great comfort especially when the ending is unsatisfactory. Last year some great fanfics saved a lot of GoT fans from breakdown. Sorry for the rant, but my fanfic profile literally says that I would die without fanfiction haha
I completely agree with your post, especially as a writer myself who puts in so much effort not just for my fans, but for myself. Sure, I recognize that the first fic I wrote in like 2014 wasn't so great lol, but now I'm basically putting out novels for readers who genuinely support and inspire me.
There has always been some people who did justice for characters and mental health. There is still a very high concentration of "bad" fanfics, so I don't think it has anything to do with the time 🤷♀️

But yeah part of you know that there was an archetype they always went for and when I wrote fan fiction I did it too because I didn't want to lose readers just for having a character I related to AKA (A black female). Like she is always pale, blonde/red hair and if she didn't have that her eyes would be like some rare gemstone color , had the body of a victoria secret model while being like 5'2 and eating like a completely pig, ultra feminine, had the morals of an angel while being a badass (that or stuttering like through like every damn sentence), etc... Representation was like nonexistent unless she was slim thicc, 'spicy', and exotic while still somehow being the most conventionally attractive, Caucasian woman in 500 mile radius.

I didn’t even write fanfiction until my late teens. I tested fanfiction.net in 2018, but not until last year that I became a fanfiction writing regular.

the cheating arc: love interest "cheats" or it just seems like they cheat (is kissed by the girl's bully or enemy, girl's bully or enemy lies, she sees them with a girl but it's a secret sister who has never been introduced to the plot before) but it's resolved usually after a tragic situation that brings them together and the jealousy is never really addressed

I’d love to add that one of the reasons fanfiction as a literary genre is still thriving despite all the problematic aspects that are shown in most books (ie: abusive relationships, misogyny, slut shaming ...) is because of the unhealthy relationships between artists and fans. This is what’s happening worldwide now because fans of some very famous artists(especially kpop bands and mostly female western artists) fall in love with artist and not the art. So these fans go around only talking about how their favorite artist looks and dresses and acts and forget that they are artist: they should be respected and loved for the art they produce. You rarely see these fans talk about how amazing the music sound and they only stream it and spam their webcams to make that artist more famous. Never have I ever seen them talk about the beauty of the art itself. These are the same fans who daydream about fucking that artist even if they don’t fuck with their art. I hope people actually grow up and realize that just like you respect a teacher for their teaching, a doctor for their job, they should also respect artists for the value they produce, aka their art.
Between The lines -wonderfully said! Lately I’ve been trying to stop idolizing people and putting them on a pedestal. Of course there is nothing wrong about having someone you look up to. But at the end of the day they’re just human and the only difference is that we have different careers.
Between The lines while I agree with everything you’ve said it’s unfortunately also true that most artists (especially in kpop) do strongly capitalize on their „appearance“ as well as their art and are marketed in a way that encourages this type of behavior. That of course is in no way an excuse but I truly believe that a lot of the young fangirls/boys mean no harm and don’t fully understand what they’re doing.
@@lenomnom I, of course, agree that it's not 100% their fault because most of them are teenagers who are going through huge changes in their personalities and are mostly confused but I don't think that the blame should be put on artists because, Yes they try to capitalize off of their appearances, but it's still up to the viewers to give them the response they deserve. People are making money however they want, and it's the behavior of fans that keeps these kinds of problems always alive. Once people start to realize that the artist is just a human being creating value and getting paid for it, the artists won't be able to get more popular because of their looks. We will then be seeing at the top of every best of songs / albums.. artists that actually deserve the title and the hype and not talentless artists with beautiful faces and bodies.

What I simply said was that some famous artists (especially kpop bands AND other well known female artists) have dedicated fans that care way more about their looks than their music. I didn't generalize because I'm well aware that there are fans who actually enjoy the art itself. You can look around on social media or talk to certain groups of stans and you will see what I mean. Obviously the bands, such as BTS and other famous Kpop bands are not the problem because they are really talented and work so hard to make music, but still seeing some fans thirst after them is what's creating the problem. my friend found one called ‘the sponge fic’ and it’s a MESS. i’m not a kpop fan so i can’t remember any of the names, but effectively one of them has a fetish for sponges so the other one (who previously screwed his brother... don’t know why that was just a casual side plot) shoves sponges UP HIS ARSE. that’s all i remember but i’m pretty sure it was like 10+ chapters long and very explicit.
Ey and it's always trending, I was on wattpad, went to the fanfiction and BOOM bts×blackpink, this one effing this one, and it's so so poorly written, tenses change, its starts in the present tense then changes to the past, descriptions of everything in excruciating detail, and the main thing about these stories that bothers me so much is that they are writing stuff: sexual, abusive and just plain horrible in all about REAL people, not fictional, I can't get over that.
I remember reading one just because I was bored and the first thing that happened was the artist was being raped on the desk by a teacher and beaten at home. No warnings at all.

Even though there are many “bad” fanfics (with toxic relationships etc, everything that got mentioned in the vid) I’ve also read many fanfics that were about healing and building healthy relationships, especially on ao3. As others in the comments already mentioned, there are really got fanfics these days that don’t include any of these stereotypical tropes and try to spread positive or even educational messages :) They are often actually worth reading

Bad boy fan fiction has been around forever!! I read one back in 2002 or so where it was Draco Malfoy and his dad was terrible and would beat him with a belt and that’s why he was so mean. And I’ve seen a ton of them since. At the time though, I thought that that story was FIRE. Edit: oh yeah and the second person thing has been around for a long time as well. They were VERY popular for Jack Sparrow fan fictions around 2005.
Most Wattpad fanfics always made me cringe when there was always that one character that was the center of attention. At least most of the time. Even if my favorite character was that specific character, I always cringed. I also hate the fanfics that show y/n suddenly able to do powers and shit. Or when they’re weak at some points for no reason.

I think the Y/N characters are a reflection of the authors themselves. The author's obsession with the band/celeb is a form of escapism from their own life. Maybe the shaming other girls and hating on more feminine qualities is a projection of their own real-life struggles. The authors of these books are possibly being bullied by girls or just feel like an outsider in their social circles, so their internalized hatred and insecurity comes through via their made-up characters.

I hate the romanticization of toxic relationships in media it’s easy to get roped into this idea that an intense back and forth relationship is romantic and passionate. Also a comment on the “long blonde haired slutty girl” I was that girl in high school and the amount of slut shaming and bullying that goes on when you are the one getting male attention I feel was never touched on. I have been reading fanfiction for more than a decade and I have to say a lot of things have changed since the time we read fanfics as teens. Nowadays writers put a lot of effort into the characters and the depiction of their mental health and struggles we can all relate to. Relationships between characters are realistic however there can be a lot of angst. I remember reading 'Broken' (HP fanfic) and crying throughout the whole thing. Fanfics can also provide a great comfort especially when the ending is unsatisfactory. Last year some great fanfics saved a lot of GoT fans from breakdown. Sorry for the rant, but my fanfic profile literally says that I would die without fanfiction haha
I completely agree with your post, especially as a writer myself who puts in so much effort not just for my fans, but for myself. Sure, I recognize that the first fic I wrote in like 2014 wasn't so great lol, but now I'm basically putting out novels for readers who genuinely support and inspire me.
There has always been some people who did justice for characters and mental health. There is still a very high concentration of "bad" fanfics, so I don't think it has anything to do with the time 🤷♀️

Like she is always pale, blonde/red hair and if she didn't have that her eyes would be like some rare gemstone color , had the body of a victoria secret model while being like 5'2 and eating like a completely pig, ultra feminine, had the morals of an angel while being a badass (that or stuttering like through like every damn sentence), etc...
Representation was like nonexistent unless she was slim thicc, 'spicy', and exotic while still somehow being the most conventionally attractive, Caucasian woman in 500 mile radius.

I’d love to add that one of the reasons fanfiction as a literary genre is still thriving despite all the problematic aspects that are shown in most books (ie: abusive relationships, misogyny, slut shaming ...) is because of the unhealthy relationships between artists and fans. This is what’s happening worldwide now because fans of some very famous artists(especially kpop bands and mostly female western artists) fall in love with artist and not the art. So these fans go around only talking about how their favorite artist looks and dresses and acts and forget that they are artist: they should be respected and loved for the art they produce. You rarely see these fans talk about how amazing the music sound and they only stream it and spam their webcams to make that artist more famous. Never have I ever seen them talk about the beauty of the art itself. These are the same fans who daydream about fucking that artist even if they don’t fuck with their art.
I hope people actually grow up and realize that just like you respect a teacher for their teaching, a doctor for their job, they should also respect artists for the value they produce, aka their art.
Between The lines -wonderfully said! Lately I’ve been trying to stop idolizing people and putting them on a pedestal. Of course there is nothing wrong about having someone you look up to. But at the end of the day they’re just human and the only difference is that we have different careers.
Between The lines while I agree with everything you’ve said it’s unfortunately also true that most artists (especially in kpop) do strongly capitalize on their „appearance“ as well as their art and are marketed in a way that encourages this type of behavior. That of course is in no way an excuse but I truly believe that a lot of the young fangirls/boys mean no harm and don’t fully understand what they’re doing.
@@lenomnom I, of course, agree that it's not 100% their fault because most of them are teenagers who are going through huge changes in their personalities and are mostly confused but I don't think that the blame should be put on artists because, Yes they try to capitalize off of their appearances, but it's still up to the viewers to give them the response they deserve. People are making money however they want, and it's the behavior of fans that keeps these kinds of problems always alive. Once people start to realize that the artist is just a human being creating value and getting paid for it, the artists won't be able to get more popular because of their looks. We will then be seeing at the top of every best of songs / albums.. artists that actually deserve the title and the hype and not talentless artists with beautiful faces and bodies.

You can look around on social media or talk to certain groups of stans and you will see what I mean.
Obviously the bands, such as BTS and other famous Kpop bands are not the problem because they are really talented and work so hard to make music, but still seeing some fans thirst after them is what's creating the problem.

my friend found one called ‘the sponge fic’ and it’s a MESS. i’m not a kpop fan so i can’t remember any of the names, but effectively one of them has a fetish for sponges so the other one (who previously screwed his brother... don’t know why that was just a casual side plot) shoves sponges UP HIS ARSE. that’s all i remember but i’m pretty sure it was like 10+ chapters long and very explicit.

Ey and it's always trending, I was on wattpad, went to the fanfiction and BOOM bts×blackpink, this one effing this one, and it's so so poorly written, tenses change, its starts in the present tense then changes to the past, descriptions of everything in excruciating detail, and the main thing about these stories that bothers me so much is that they are writing stuff: sexual, abusive and just plain horrible in all about REAL people, not fictional, I can't get over that.

Even though there are many “bad” fanfics (with toxic relationships etc, everything that got mentioned in the vid) I’ve also read many fanfics that were about healing and building healthy relationships, especially on ao3. As others in the comments already mentioned, there are really got fanfics these days that don’t include any of these stereotypical tropes and try to spread positive or even educational messages :) They are often actually worth reading

Bad boy fan fiction has been around forever!! I read one back in 2002 or so where it was Draco Malfoy and his dad was terrible and would beat him with a belt and that’s why he was so mean. And I’ve seen a ton of them since. At the time though, I thought that that story was FIRE.
Edit: oh yeah and the second person thing has been around for a long time as well. They were VERY popular for Jack Sparrow fan fictions around 2005.

Most Wattpad fanfics always made me cringe when there was always that one character that was the center of attention. At least most of the time. Even if my favorite character was that specific character, I always cringed. I also hate the fanfics that show y/n suddenly able to do powers and shit. Or when they’re weak at some points for no reason.
