    When in doubt, thin it down more! Most noobs use too heavy of a mix. Also, the new texture will shrink back a little. Got 45 years doing this under my belt.

    Great workmanship again Orange Peel looks really good. I really like that harbor freight little cheap gun I got better results with that doing smaller jobs than the homax. I also added the air regulator to the end of that gun which was a big helper in trying to get the correct air temperature to spray the correct pattern to match your patterns perfectly on an existing pattern that little air regulator at the inlet added to the texture gun gave you that more air control right there which was a big help and then also definitely like you said you need to have the compressor power to spray the knockdown and orange peel from these Hopper guns definitely need at least a pancake compressor that's what I use but that's for you know just rooms. And then same thing with the homemax orange peel and knockdown spray cans that are already made I can see those same results that have happened before also I see that lovely first patch there were no one even sanded on the top of that looks horrible. But I learned that the best way to try to get these cans at the best results is to of course warm them up soak them in the hot water shake them up for a minute test spray on a piece of cardboard and usually end up maxing out how far you can turn the dial to get the pattern you want and then of course how far back you are from where you're going to spray and the rotation counterclockwise small circles in your hand came out really good with the hopper gun but with the spray cans I always get those tiny bubbles in there or I'll get a big inconsistent spray or no aerosol or too much aerosol spray at the beginning put the can in too hot of water or warm it up in the sink under hot water to try to get it done faster and it always seems like probably 70% of the time I always end up with those tiny little micro bubbles in that spray can texture that come out horrible and you can't get a knockdown big enough to really match it you can only go with the orange peel and the orange feel I could actually get to look like it was done with a real machine sometimes if it was just a small enough spot.

    Sooooooo helpful!!! I have a very, very light texture. The painter called it wallpaper texture. No one else has ever heard of it. I don't know how to match it. The previous owners loved spackle and filled a 4 inch circle around each dent, ding or whole, ruining the texture!!! My thought is to try really thin mud and fine tip with lots of air flow and pressure. Any other ideas??.

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Actually you are right on track except one last variable, barely pull the trigger and you’ll get a nice fine mist. If you don’t, your muds probably not thin enough.
      Also if they made all those shiny spots repairing nail holes, and they didn’t sand the edges, the texture won’t make it go away. It will give texture to the shiny spot but the edge will still show unless you put a coat of mud on it and sand it properly. Watch my video about repairing nail holes to see what I’m talking about.
      Really glad I could help, and let me know how it works out please. Guy

    I love your videos, thank you! I have knockdown texture on my walls and need to do a repair. Is the repair process different as opposed to a smooth wall? Concerned that the mud stackup could get quite ugly after taping, mudding, feathering and then applying new knockdown texture over the repair area. Any advice as how to proceed? Thanks,

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey glad to hear my videos are helping. As for repairing a wall with knockdown texture, I do it all the time. If you don’t put too much mud under the joint tape, or use mesh tape instead, and keep your coats as thin as possible, and know how to spread the mud plenty wide, it works just fine.
      Check out my video on repairing a large hole on the ceiling at th-cam.com/video/JoWWE7d7UU8/w-d-xo.html To see how wide I coat a repair. Be sure to whether the outside edges with a dry sanding sponge until they are literally tapered out to nothingness.
      I will be putting out a video on spraying knockdown texture soon.

    Thanks for the video. Missed it by one day because I actually sprayed a can of the pro orange peel yesterday lol. I played with the nozzle and practiced a little prior to application and it turned out pretty good I think. Will see when the paint goes on today. I also have the Wagner electric hopper that I’ve used before and works pretty well. Just didn’t feel like mixing the texture so I opted for the convenience in the can😏. Have you ever tried the Wagner electric texture gun? I’d imagine you wouldn’t really ever use one because you already have two good options, but maybe you could do a video on that some day. Thanks again for your informative videos.

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jay. No, I've never used the Wagner. I have used the pro rigs which my father had, but those run about $10,000, so most people don't know about them. I've also used a Graco texture sprayer, and a contractor friend of mine just bought one, so I'll be doing a review/demonstration of that item pretty soon. I will keep the wagner sprayer in mind for a future video as well. Thanks for the idea, and glad you enjoy the videos. Take care, Guy

    Thanks for your videos. I have a compressor style hopper similar to yours - what is the best way to spray this orange peel texture ceilings especially in a tight space like a hallway? How do you keep the mud from spilling out the top of the hopper? Won't holding at an angle create a weird angled texture?

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For ceilings, I just don't fill it too full, and don't tilt it back to far. If you do that, the pattern looks fine. You can also put an adapter on the hopper to tilt it more forward for ceilings, but I didn't like it so don't use it. Here's a hopper with one of those- amzn.to/36HHO58
      Or buy a plumbing adapter out of rubber and make your own.

    Do you use the same hopper setup to apply medium orange peel texture to a ceiling repair? I have a 7’ by 4-1/2’ foot area to texture so it matches the rest of the ceiling. Had to repair a large water leak from upstairs toilet.

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, I use the same hopper to texture everything. All I have to do is switch out the tip. I actually own three or four of the hoppers and sometimes have one set up for popcorn ceilings repair, and the other one for regular orange peel or knockdown texture. Some hoppers have an angled neck you can put on them to make it a little easier to spray ceilings, but I don’t bother switching that out. Thanks, and I hope that helps.

    We had ceiling done by professional and he did a crappy job, the kitchen heavy on one side and light texture on other side. Living room in spotty globs. Spare texture on edge of room. Seam lines showing, missing paint. I told painter I am not happy how it turned out. Basicly he said that how it is, nothing can be done, live with it. Is this normal? He was having trouble with his air adjustment. How should this issue be resolved?

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to hear that, but it happens a lot. He sounds like either he has no integrity, or he's not nearly as good as he said he was. That shouldn't happen but at this point the only cure is to skimcoat the whole ceiling, sand it smooth and re-texture, so I'm not sure what to tell you. For future contractors, I'd suggest downloading my Free ebook which covers how to hire the right contractor to avoid getting burned. You can find it on my website at: www.thatkiltedguy.com

    Hey man. Thanks for the video. But I had a question. Sometimes when I shoot a patch with texture. Sometimes the texture I shoot is more sharper then the original texture. So that means my patch stands out. How do you match dull texture?

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's especially a problem with knock down, so I know what you mean. I don't know a great solution except to paint the repair extra heavy and about 4 times to help soften it out. Its usually duller from being painted a lot. Sometimes you need to shoot with a thinner mud to get it to lay flatter and appear to have less sharp edges, but I think lots of paint helps the most.

    That harbor freight gun there for $20 that you have the red one I actually got better results using that one compared to the home Max brand I like the tip better on that one for for spraying industry standard type of orange peel and industry standard type of knockdown that you get in these production things. That little harbor freight gun was a really good gun actually and I still have it and I always keep one. You just have to get a stronger clamp and then when I always load up those Hoppers I always have an extra bucket just for that gun to sit inside and hold it while I fill it up it just makes it easier instead of trying to hold it and then you could possibly tumble over the top because it's not strong enough holding to the gun itself so I'll just pouring it inside the bucket was a good tip that I did.

    Great video and really specific about spray texture variables. I believe you identified 6 variables in your video but I think you could add one more. Motion. Do you spray in a horizontal straight line from left to right or vertical from top to bottom or a circular overlapping motion. I've actually seen all 3 of these motion techniques and just curious about which one you believe produces the most consistent application results.
    Also in your video the camera was up to close to the wall itself when you were actually spraying the wall so I wasn't able to actually see how far away from the wall you were standing when spraying. Of course, distance is really important to know and maintain in order to produce consistent results.
    Thank you for all you do!
    Kelly

    • @ThatKiltedGuyDIY
      @ThatKiltedGuyDIY  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Kelly, I mostly use an overlapping back and forth pattern, but sometimes circular too, but even that overlaps fairly evenly. Most work, but I really dislike random, uneven speed patterns as it looks so uneven when it's done.
      I believe it keep the sprayer about 2-3' away from the surface. Thanks for the comment. 😎🔨👣

      @@ThatKiltedGuyDIY I really prefer smooth walls actually...it requires a lot more diligence on final mud finishing but it is clean. However, smooth walls are a little "colder" and carries sound more than a textured finish so I prefer a fine orange peel finish. I'm working on a 2 story house and finished the downstairs several months ago and now getting ready to shoot the upstairs. The reason for my texture interest was in part because I just didn't get the consistency with my finish in the downstairs that you would see from a professional. My girlfriend tells me it looks great but people really don't pay attention to that detail much and we're always our own worst critics. We always see our own mistakes! Anyway, I suspect that my mud was not thin enough so your video helped me to really focus on all those variables. I'm hoping for better results.
      Thank you for taking the time to help people realize the personal satisfaction and pride in the results of their painstaking labor. Drywalling is not easy....physically or mentally. As you have so eloquently noted in several of your videos....It is an art!

    Our original texture looks sort of like a flower. It’s faint but nice

      Somebody said it was likely a ‘magnolia’ stomp stamp or technique. Is that something like I saw on Your channel?

    I bought one of those cans from home depot and ended taking it back for a refund. The tip got clogged the first 5 seconds of use and rendered the whole thing useless! I thought that I could save time... back to the ole hopper gun!

      I don't think so. The detail is important to really understanding how to do it.

      Yep, that's my style. I like to TEACH, not just show, and that takes explaining. But feel free to skip to the part where I show it done.
