[Intro]
Tell me why
Tell me why
[Verse 1]
Contempt in your eyes when I turn to kiss his lips
Broken I lie, all my feelings denied, blood on your fist
[Chorus]
Can you tell me why?
Can you tell me why?
Can you tell me why?
Can you tell me why?
[Interlude]
Ooh!
[Verse 2]
You in your false securities tear up my life, condemning me
Name me an illness, call me a sin, never feel guilty, never give in
[Chorus]
Tell me why?
Tell me why?
Tell me why?
Tell me why?
Yeah!
[Interlude]
Aah!
[Bridge]
You and me together, fighting for our love
You and me together, fighting for our love
You and me together, fighting for our love
You and me together, fighting for our love
You and me together, fighting for our love
You and me together, fighting for our love
You and me together, fighting for our love
You and me together, fighting for our love
[Interlude]
Ooh!
[Verse 3]
Contempt in your eyes when I turn to kiss his lips
Broken I lie, all my feelings denied, blood on your fist
[Chorus]
Can you tell me why?
Can you tell me why?
Can you tell me why?
Can you tell me why?
Can you tell me why?
Can you tell me why?
Can you tell me why?
Can you tell me why?
Can you tell me why?

RIP to Steven Forrest and Larry Steinbachek who was a composer, song writer and synthesiser keyboardist for Bronski Beat. The trio from the greatest decade of music will never be forgotten.
Greatest decade.

As a very closeted teen in the early 80's living in a backwater town in Tasmania Australia bronski was a life line ❤❤❤
It must have been so difficult for you. As a straight man I could never experience something like being “in the closet”. It’s such a shame that even today people have to hide their identity for fear of violence, I hope it all worked out for you, God bless.

I came here searching for this. Was talking to a buddy of mine earlier. Every weekend in a club in the 80s, with 2000+ people in it. About 10 of us sitting around a large table talking. As soon as we heard this song, everything was dropped and we're on the floor giving it large- all lads. Not one s*** was given. Another couple of numbers that initiated a similar reaction were She Sells Sanctuary (The Cult), This Charming Man (the smiths), and oddly enough, Happy Hour (House Martins). Different era, great times. Time rolls on, mid fifties now and if I think about that too much I'll annoy myself!
Way to go! Must have been a such fun evening can't wait to start living again -post Covid- 😉
Great times at the Ritz in New York.!!!❤️❤️
Well damn, if I thought about all that too much I'd Touch Myself (The Divinyls)
It has to be one of my absolute favourites of Bronski Beat. Sounds like you and your mates had truely banging time with excellent bands with excellent tunes! Definitely good times. can't wait to go to clubs!
Iv never been horrible to any gay person but back in the 80's I was like most teenagers thinking it was not normal. As a 54 year old man I can only apologies for my ignorance. I have been married to my wife for over 30 years and in this time met lots gay men who have always been nice people. Sorry for being ignorant
I’m not gay but I can really appreciate this. ❤️. That was so nice of you. As a woman, I know they are the best most fun friends and great neighbors. Truth!!

Being out in the 80s, that took some guts. I respect the hell out of that.
Tu abuela en bicicleta wey! No entiendo ni pedo que está pasando ahorita wey
Depended where you lived. In cities that had a gay community it was a blast. This song captures the spirit.
@@peterpiperthefirst9791 I grew up in Ireland in the 80s. Not the most open-minded of climates and I confess to being a product of my environment when I was young. Then I got a little bit older and wiser and realised some of my favourite people weren't straight like me. Nowadays I respect having the guts to be unapologetically yourself when the whole world saw you as a leper or worse.
@@dars5229 I love Ireland, had a friend who lived in the US for 15 year then moved back. I visited & got the grand island tour including a day and night on the Aran Islands. Love the music, love the literature. A culture to be proud of. -- I think it takes guts to be who you are no matter what. Everyone has their own battle to fight. In the 80s the big cities were a refuge for lesbians & gays but even smaller cities/university towns had their own enclave, often in plain sight but invisible if you didn't know. At this distance of decades what I recall most is how much fun we all had. May sound odd: prejudice was widespread, these were the dark years of Aids, but people pulled together, fought back, many straight allies, lots of compassion. Sometimes I think it's just as important to recall the joyfulness of those times, an almost a utopian spirit sometimes, the anarchy and playfulness. You can hear it in the music -- Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Dead or Alive, Culture Club, Pet Shop Boys, George Michael, Queen -- well I won't go on, it's a long list. When we'd all get together night after night it was a celebration. Thanks for your generous post.
@@peterpiperthefirst9791 Yeah, I was raised on Pet Shop Boys, Queen, George Michael. And, of course, Bronski Beat and The Communards. Others like Bowie I discovered for myself. I worked in my Da's garage and there was a dude who worked nearby as a locksmith. He was a great guy, big Elvis fan. Kept a big dog called Blue, almost as tall as me. A huge Great Dane. And years later, I realized two things; one, he was gay and two, I'd been an asshole. Like, he wasn't from another planet, didn't have three heads and eat babies. I realized my "friends" were full of shit and my Da who just liked good music and accepted people for who they are was right. Now as I get older, I agree with you. It takes guts to be who you are, no matter what.
Brings back the good memories of the 80ies. I remember this in 1984 as if it had been yesterday.
Those sure were better times. I just don't know what went wrong.

And producing music that makes you want to dance.
RIP Steve Bronski and thanks for the music. Smalltown Boy is our coming out anthem. Why is another great one. I came out with my college friends in 1986 with music from Marc Almond/Soft Cell, Erasure, The Pet Shop Boys, Dead or Alive, New Order, The Cure, Depeche Mode and, of course, Bronski Beat. Their music was integral to our experience. So very sad to hear this news but these songs will live on for centuries.
How did the AIDS thing effect you? As that started up about the same time you came out?
@@kevinprior3549When bands like the Culture Club or Bronski Beat came out there was already some information on HIV/AIDS and the need to protect yourself from it with a condom. Sadly, many people had already been infected and were dying. These sort of bands were crucial into conveying a message that was important to bring down gender/sexual orientation barriers...

LOL!! Remember dancing my ass to this in the 80s at Lazers nightclub in Torquay on a Sunday night - first club in the country to have lasers if I remember rightly. But all that mattered was it was free to get in on a Sunday. It was packed! Met my first real love there (Linda Squire - hi there Linda!!). Ah, the memories, what I wouldn't give to be back in those days, 18 years old, whole life ahead of me, my health, with no worries. And big hair of course!!

I come directly from a great movie called: "Avenging Angel 2 1985". Donna Wilkes does not repeat the role of ANGEL, in this second part she is replaced by a beautiful woman "Betsy Russell" without a doubt a great action / cult movie from the wonderful 80s. The saga has 4 parts
