    You know it’s going to be a good video when it start with before the beginning! The ds2 is gold

      Glad it was recognisable haha, Fun fact I cut my finger on one of the bends and you hear the string go slightly flat, couldn't record another take with a slice in it hahaha. Thanks for dropping the comment :D

    Nice Video. Dave Navarro uses this pedal and gets great tone out of it too. Both great players in their own ways

  •  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    2:12 Some fans and even John's former tech Dave Lee view the CE-1 as *more important* than the DS-2, not because of its chorus, but because of its preamp, which is *always on* in John's clean tone. Aside from giving crunch in his clean tone (like an overdrive), the CE-1 preamp also compresses the DS-2's volume jump.
    That being said, they also say that the DS-2, or any buffered bypass pedal placed before the CE-1, like the WH-10, is still needed in John's clean tone even if it's off, for its buffer will prevent the preamp from sounding dark and dull.

    • @Paul-D
      @Paul-D  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I dont think the CE-1 is more important to anyone trying to get Johns tone themselves. But its probably more important to John himself. Does that make sense?
      In other words, the ds2 is the only sound he has that cant be even closely matched with anything else. Where as all other aspects of his sound can be reasonably closely matched by other means.
      But if your actually John Frusciante there isnt that luxury because its a very strict recipe, down to the 2 amps, the way each and every pedal behaves its all set in stone pretty much. So in that scenario pedals like the CE1 become way more important to him then anyone else.
      Of course many people DO go the whole hog and try and replicate the entire signal chain including the dual amps etc

    •  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@Paul-DI'm assuming that you replicated the CE-1 preamp with your Keeley Compressor, which you mentioned at 6:27. What are your settings for it? (I really like your tone in your 57/62 vs Tex Mex Frusciante Tone-Off video.)

    • @Paul-D
      @Paul-D  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeh that's what I use the Keeley compressor plus for. My settings on it are everything 12 o clock and single coil mode. Leave it as always on.

  • @nickmaybes
    @nickmaybes 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Slams the signal with the mid boost makes your single coil sound like a Les paul or a cocked wah and a fuzz - it’s an extraordinary sound - once you figure out its his lead boost mid hump then discover he’s used it for fat power chord and riffs since blood sugar at least! Really put me full circle. Crank that thru a big stack or super bass you’ve got singing Fruciante sustain heaven.. then Kurt cobain too in utero can hear it all over that

    Hi nice advice I got Boss DS-1 Pedal could I run a overdrive pedal lowish run them both at same time to get the kind of same effect? bit pricy down my wat cheers. (tonerider pure vintage pickups)?

      Ive tried just about every which way to emulate the ds2 and absolutely nothing sounds like it.

  • @nostro1001

    I could be wrong, cause I'm not up with the cheap multi effects pedals, but I recall some joyo (I think) multi effects unit with a distinct boss ds2 tone selectable as one of about 10. Haven't heard it for a while, but was watching some friends jamming and the guitarist was using it. It was even cheaper than a Boss & could be an option.
    Totally agree Pauly... What a crap pedal unless run into an overdriven amp and you've dialed in the 'right' settings.
    I assume John got started with his d's 2 as back in the day the selection of pedals was not like today and the options kinda flimsy by comparison with today's market. So, perhaps he thought he'd give it a crack and persisted. Today, the options are so vast, you'd hear something and then just go nope, I'll try that other od pedal, rinse and repeat.
    You've defo found the tone these days & would please anybody going to see a peppers cover band for example!
    👍

      @Paul-D  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ahhh i thought behringher if anyone would have one but havent heard one yet lol. Thats probably not far wrong tbf its easy to forget when the ds2 became used by john the pedal world was a vastly different place then it is now lol.
      Id actually like to be part of a working rhcp covers band as a way of getting back into gigging. I always imagine trying to set one up would just be 4 guys wanting to do frusciantes part haha.

    Good vid. I've got no pedals at all as the massive pedalboard I was borrowing from a mate has gone back to him. A DS-2 isn't high up my list for when I eventually start getting some pedals. I don't like the yellow for a start 🤣

      Probably some sort of overdrive, reverb, delay and a looper. Ask me again tomorrow and I'll probably give a different answer!

    Does anyone here have experience using an original Boss CE-1 with a ds-2? I'm running my boss ds2 --> CE-1 --> front of amp and getting a ton of noise. I'm trying to tame the thing and can't tell if it's the ds2 or the CE-1 causing the noise, but I'm thinking it's the ds-2. When I isolate each pedal, it's not nearly as bad, so that tells me the two pedals aren't getting along well lol. Wondering if anyone knows how John uses it and if I'm possibly doing something wrong given how sensitive these pedals seem to be.

    • @Paul-D
      @Paul-D  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi - I can't add much here, But I can say that John only ever switches on the DS2 when he's actually playing through it and immediately stamps it off the second he's done with it. It never comes on a split second before he needs it. It is a horrendously noisy pedal. Maybe that adds something.
      Unless your issue is the hiss is over the top of actual playing with it on?

    • @B2Rockin
      @B2Rockin 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Paul-D that’s good to know actually, thank you! And great question, it’s noisy as hell when I have both pedals on, even with a noise gate. It’s the ds2 the noise gate has a hard time controlling, but maybe that’s normal. Could be the balance between using a slightly driven clean channel vs. clean channel with a slight drive pedal in front. I’ll play with it some more.

    • @Paul-D
      @Paul-D  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeh and the CE1 crunch or any pedal someone might use to imitate that part of johns sound, is essentially a compressor of sorts, so any noise floor is getting squeezed up - throw in a noisy pedal like the DS2 and you got trouble haha.

    • @Paul-D
      @Paul-D  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yeh I think the new ones are fine. The originals don't go for multiple thousands either like is typical Nowadays so people can't be that hard on them haha.

    Kurt Cobain used a ds2 live. It was his main distortion…. Though he used only mode 1… he did not like mode 2. This is according to his tech.

    • @Paul-D

      Makes sense. Mode 1 is more similar to ds1 i guess too
