He’s just repeating what he did in the 1999 tour combining the ds2 with the fz3. He’s always liked to combine the ds2 with other fuzz pedals. The ds2 really makes some fuzz pedals shine with the mid range boost. I love pairing the ds2 with my fz2 clone and tc rusty fuzz.

In the context of getting his sound, other than the Turbo Mode and having the gain at least at 12 o'clock or past that the other settings don't matter at all because their place (tone and level) will depend on amp type, volume, response, etc .. not to mention that playing stadiums, venues is a lot different than playing with a laptop and a combo in an apartment/bedroom in terms of volume. Even having the same exact JF equipment also does not matter because all the sudden he changes those settings .. sooner or later.

I've had both Made in Japan and a new one, and the only way I was able to tell is on the bottom where the label says "Made in x". I like to use John's choices as a starting point, but I don't try and force them to work for me when they don't. for example, I side lined my micro amp for the archer JB. I side lined the DS-2 for the Vemuram ODS-1 and Toni Iommi range master from Black Country Customs instead of a big muff. I've also gone back to my v1.5 WH010, because I don't like the boost in the V1, I find it too bright in my use. They just work better for me and are more flexible for other stuff I play. I like to collect, so I get wanting to mimic what John has, but I found what works for him doesn't work as well for me and I suspect John feels the same about his pedal choices. Additionally, people should not discount the impact the mixing boards and outboard gear have on his tone. I heard John's rig during sound check at stage volume and I thought it sounded raspy.

another thing to consider with the DS-2 regarding made in Japan vs Taiwan isnt that big a difference. However, I'm told there is a big difference with the DS-1.

@Dan Taylor ive got 3 black label ds1's and 2 mij ds-2. Depending how you set them they can sound almost the same but all the older ones have more usable range in the tone knob and my 2 mij ds-2's both sound awesome but a little different from eachother and one of them has had the shit gigged out of it.

You cant tell by looking at the ds-2 because mij old ones have a silver label and the newer style power jack. The mij do sound way better though i have 2 and they blow away the old ones and normally i use mit boss all the time but the new ds-2 is all midrange very harsh the mij is so much warmer! I wouldnt be suprised if hes using new ones though.

by the looks of those pedals, IMO they're probably newer version. They look too clean for extensively used pedal. I had my DS2 MIJ for years and got paint chipping away and the orange fading . I dont use it that often.

I guess drive is the effect is in which guitar players are more volatile. Who didn't love a overdrive pedal and a few time later was thinking about a new one?
So it seems natural to me that he tries other settings.

All i want to know how exactly he is setting up his CE1 Preamp and how he is setting up his compressors. Im getting pretty close with a compressor at the start off the chain and one after the CE1 being used in stereo mode.
BUT its either nailing his clean tone or nailing the chorus tone. Whenever i get the clean tone right, the chorus has way too much gain going on.
I can sort of roll back volume on compressor no1 but then my drive pedals and wah dont respond the way i want them and you can tell that im loosing alot of signal when i roll back that much.
    Any ideas?

    • @christiancarbajosa347
      @christiancarbajosa347 ปีที่แล้ว +1

There's plenty of photos (and Justin videos) showing John's CE-1 settings. The preamp's at 11 o'clock on the High setting. His compressor is at 1-ish o'clock and 11-ish o'clock from left to right.

  • @zrobertez

Barely a difference between the two. Mine seems to clean up a little with guitar volume that I would think could cover both of these. So i guess it's just for convenience.

Looks like an older SD1 compared to my newer one, I can’t say for sure on the DS2 but the older SD1s were more of a screaming yellow and current more of a zinc yellow at least that’ll make sense to any new edge Mustang guys out there. New SD1 are more pastel yellow and the older ones are vibrant although the stage is obviously a little dark and they all could be brand new Boss pedals but I thought the old ds2 was more orange and the older ones more yellow, who knows the good thing about boss is consistency the new pedals sound the same as the old ones the pots are all going to drift and I suppose you could have a ton of tolerance stack up one way on one and to the other end of their specs on a different one and maybe just maybe a regular non guitar nerd might be able to tell the difference but I seriously doubt boss allows enough variance in components that two would ever sound vastly different. New boss pedals sound as good as the old ones at least to my ears. The older been around the world or in and out of bars beat to death sure do look cooler than the brand new shiny ones. Someone is relicing brand new pedals right now I guarantee lol.

Around californication he ran his amps very dirty
Then for by the way he cleaned the amps up a fair bit
I'm pretty sure the micro amp is just to push the amps for those songs that need the amps overdriving
