I saw Nirvana open for Tad in 1989 or 90 at Maxwells in Hoboken New Jersey. Kurt smashed his guitar at the end of the set so me and my friend helped him pick up the pieces scattered across the floor. We talked as we helped him. He was very friendly and cool. Maybe 50 people were there

I own one for at least 13-14 years. Never disappointed. A really great, versatile and huge sounding box. And like somebody said - criminally underrated.

The magic of the turbo distortion lies in the frequency boost they added to the classic Ds1 (which is mode 1 on the pedal) and which is quite similar to the HM2 actually. That's what makes it brutal as Ola said. It's a criminally underrated pedal.
Yeah I immediately discovered it's chainsaw potential after purchasing one a few years ago.

I had this pedal back in the 80's. Turbo was a great DB booster for lead solos. There is an Remote Footswitch input jack to switch between modes, sold separately of coarse! lol
And you can sweep easly through light overdrive to fuzz territory. Sounds amazing in all possible ways
@@freedomination2 never tried but i guess you can easily just plug in any off-brand cheap mono footswitch.

About Kurt. He did use the ds2 as a replacement after his ds1 broke, but during the in utero era he mainly used a sans amp
I'm almost sure he had both of them,
not sure why he kept the ds2
Yeah I forgot about the period the sans amp was employed, I could have sworn it was during the 'In Utero' record, but I stand corrected, I've actually got both of them, I haven't looked at the Earnie Bailey 'Kurt's Equipment' in years, but he has all of that information listed on there and it's quiet fascinating for people into Nirvana / Kurt's rig, those MESA racks he used back them instead of Marshall heads (Kurt hated Marshall because of hair metal bands in the 80's) are crazy rare now and very pricey!
He used the DS-2 not the Sansamp to record In Utero.
I own a SansAmp Classic reissue myself and it is really fucking badass, though it is pricey as hell. It cost me $299 and by the time tax was calculated, it was $317.
I bought one of these at a yard sale a decade ago for about $5 and loved it immediately. I wasn't expecting much when I picked it up, but I was blown away by how good it sounded. Best $5 I ever spent.

As a John Frusciante fanboy the DS-2 is an essential part of the pedal board. He puts it on mode II with every knob dimed… the sound is immediately recognizable it’s Frusciante in a box
Yes, I’ve heard he dimes the knobs but he may have some sort of tool to compensate for it. When I dime my DS-2 it sounds horrendous. I can get great RHCP sounds without diming anything, however

Damn, I was expecting it to fart out like the DS-1 but that was brutal as hell. Sounds like it’d be fun for some gross metal riffs.

I've tried this pedal on fx loop return...straight on input and i've even used it as a boost... it gets the job done on every occasion i can say...Solid!
Thanks to this video, Ola, I gave the DS-2 a whirl into my FX Loop return… and my goodness! It’s a metal machine! I used to always put it in front of the amp for Frusciante style leads/solos and it’s wild and unruly… so I never considered a metal application for it till now… I kind of like it as a preamp pedal more than I do my REVV G3, and that’s a high bar to clear! Thank you for trying this out!
Everyone is talking about the chugs, but the grind on those power chords is what got me. I love distortion that has that hard edge to it but still sounds thick. MIDS!

I love this pedal i always have it on, it is even great with almost no distortion it is very transparent with the tone. It is a cheap great pedal
87 ! Made the year I was born ! also this pedal sounds amazeballs in 2022 and it shows the options available were not ready for current days ..... Back to the future represent!

He never dimed the distortion on any of his albums, only during live performances for feedback.

@@PapaRikkiBalls He didn't need to on his albums, multi tracking the guitars gave similar saturation. On In Utero his distortion was maxed though but he used a Tech 21 Sans Amp Classic for that

I've had one of the back in 1995... lost it around 2003.. don't know how.. then after searching for years I found one for sale in either Stockholm or Malmo Sweden in 2010... love this pedal. Just awesome tones.
Bought one about 2 weeks ago as a first pedal and i'm enjoying it a lot

Love this pedal. I can get a great old school thrash/death tone with this into a Marshall 2210.
I've never played, or even heard a demo of a DS-2, but that actually sounds pretty sick. I might pick one up the next time I see one on craigslist for $40.
It might be slightly broken if not glitchy or dead on arrival. 😂
This was Fudge Tunnel's main distortion Alex Newport made this thing absolutely chug on their albums. 🤟

I'll be honest! Ola - I adore the channel. But I'm not huge on your branded guitars.
BUT
THAT one there... OMG man. It plucked a string in my heart, and somehow, old-school metalhead to metalhead, it resonated to the very core of me.
I don't know how on Earth I will manage it, but I simply MUST get hold of one of those to try, and if I like it, buy.
That thing is one of the most perfect axes I've seen in a while.

I used to use one back in 89 90 loved it great sound through my marshall amp
my first ever Boss Pedal :D so much memories.. traded it for a used OS-2.. then eventually sold it to add fund for Ibanez Jemini
I had one back in the early 90s but upgraded to the metal zone I still use today along with an EQ pedal to clean it up
I used to record metal riffs in studio as an engineer combining a DS-2 on turbo mode with a HM-2 for extra balls . IMAGINE THAT

In my last gig, my DS2 broke, next day I ordered another one, this pedal is my absolute favorite, it is very versatile when used right, from quite dense distortions to light atmospheric-like ones. For me this pedal is a must

AWSOME video as usual. I'm a huge fan of boss pedals. I started out with a ds1. Amazing pedal. Very versatile and sounds good. I still use it and an original mt2 metal zone. Lol I know they get alot of hate, but they sound good when dialed in on a good sounding amp.

Oddly enough, I use this pedal primarily to add body to my clean sound. I always have the distortion knob turned all the way down. It's quite nice.

In the old days, the Boss page would say the DS2 shines when everything is cranked up to the max in turbo 2. The pedal is awesome! Total rock n' roll sound.
Dan Swanö talks about Jon Nödtveidt Boss DS-2: "after that he took his Boss Turbo Distortion (DS2) pedal and connected it between the guitar and the “distorted to the max” Marshall amp and there it was “The Dissection sound” - a lovely blend of transistor and valve distortion!!🔥🖤

sorry for one year of delay, but i bought it. very cool, mode 1 more scooped tone at max into effect loop of my valvestate and g12t.75- very 90's doom sound, yes a little fuzzy but i like it. one of my best discovering in the latest years.

The DS-2 works as my booster for solos. My main dist is the overdrive of my Valvestate Marshall... Works everytime :)
I got mine in 1994 and still get some playing time from time to time.

The DS-2, or as I will call it from this day forward "the Crowbar in a box" pedal, sounds sweeeeet! I'll be getting one when I find a good deal.
I ain't wow-ed by the pedal, but the Solar Vinter 7 string model with chrome up-picks, Evertune bridge and machine heads are just simply.... GORGEOUS TO THE MAX. SERIOUSLY.
This was my first pedal ever, I eventually discovered that OD was what I want after getting a Blues Driver and Tube Screamer and never looked back

I had a Boss distortion pedal like that about 30 years ago. We used call it “Crunch” instead of chug.

This was my first distortion pedal. I got it when I was 13. I love that thing. It’s not always on my main board but when I want to play some Nirvana, you can bet your ass I plug it in.
