Few things i discovered after owning this set for some time: 1.snarl can use his red backpiece as a shield in robot mode (it peg in the same way as in combiner mode) 2. If you want to make grimlocks leg mode a bit more solid you can "fan mode" it a bit by basically pointing both chest panels downwards, hooking them behind what were his robot shoulders and giving it a light squeeze (this lightly lifts the whole upper dino torso up a bit, so just point the dino head a bit downwards). This way they stay in place during posing and it overall looks better/ more cohesive
I like to unfold the back of his legs (dinobots legs) to make volcanicus taller. You are correct about the feet ports which are made for the upgrade kit.
My very first combiner! He's super fun to mess with, and the upgrade kits are basically a must-have, they bring his total price up to around $90-100 but it massively improves him :)
Individually they're okay, the Toyhax set helps them visually there. I know of a pair of 3D printed upgrade sets plus the DNA set coming out later this year. I went with the more expensive 3D printed kit option which has 4 hands, using the legs of each arm to give it a General Grievous/Goro setup. But those hands only hold the swords it comes with so I might get the DNA kit later & use some of its pieces. The set also comes with some gap filler parts for the small bots which really help Sludge look... less worse in robot mode. There are also individual weapon sets which give each one their sword & gun, but that can get expensive for all the sets as I think each kit costs as much as each toy, they're also 3D printed so care has to be taken with their handles.
It was interesting to see them improve as they made each dinobot even though it isn’t perfect it is pretty fun and I think that in the future they will be good from the start
I really hope someone makes an upgrade kit for each of the Dinobots so they can all have good articulation and not just Swoop and Snarl. And also to make Sludge actually good
I have all of the core class dinobots! My mom bought me snarl first at target, then my older brother bought me grimlock and snarl from bbts, then my mom bought me swoop from target, then I bought skarr from target, and finally, my brother bought me snarl from Amazon. I only wanted to collect them all just because they can combine.
Fun fact: Skarr predates Slash by a good bit, first appearing in Spotlight Shockwave! He is the Dinobot Medic. And with Paddles and Slash was kinda forgotten about but the design team love him as much as I do given they offhandedly said they want to give him a Leader Class. I stil plan to get them but will only get Swoop, Skarr, and Snarl
I like this set, and I think overall they're very good. This is only the second time we've gotten a combiner at this size (Prime Abominus being first) and both done by different design teams. I want to see them keep this up. I'd love a core Devastator to mess around with. He'd be easiest I think since you could mostly just keep them very similar to the G1 toys.
I know it’s 3rd/4th party, but there’s a core class G1 Devastator you can find online and it’s pretty good. Doesn’t have heels so he tends to fall backwards a lot, but it’s a great set. I can’t remember the company name, but they called it Hulkie and the 4th party version was around $40 and has diecast on it.

I feel like Iguanus as a comparison is a bit unfair. The average core doesn’t have waist swivel or ankle tilt, so something like core Optimus probably would’ve been a better example of a standard Core Class
I feel like it's also not as good of a comparison because iguanus barely transformed? Like he's just a bike made of limbs while tje dinobots have to turn into dinosaurs and combine so they don't have nearly as many compromises as iguanus did
I found a couple of good sets for this guy on ee bay - YYW-40 upgrade kit for the add on hands and feet (and some fillers for the worst of Sludge's hollow waffling on the legs) plus YYW-42 upgrade kit that adds little spacers at the knees and shoulders. Depending on how the prices are when you look the two sets together are probably in the $35-40 USD range. There is a different arms/feet set out there that has a supplementary set so you can do General Grievous arms that split bid-bicep into four, but this set looks decent and isn't as expensive even without counting the secondary pair of arm parts. (Note: I am not involved with anyone selling these or any other upgrade kits beyond having bought them to put on my Smolcanicus, just wanted to point them out since they're relevant to the video.)
Sl*g’s robot mode really should have the back panels opened to form ‘wings’ like his G1 figure. So I wouldn’t ding his rating on the restricted waist rotation.
I think the ports at the bottom of the legs were secretly put there by the engineers because they knew a third-party company was going to make feet. And lo and behold by the time you've made this review there's already an upgrade kit that includes feet
I feel like this would be a really cool way to do a Power Rangers crossover. Repaint them into each rangers Dino/ maybe slight retool. Boom you have transforming Power Rangers that combine into the megazord!

Haven't gotten to check my local target yet since people have been finding them there whereas my walmarts decided to restock core class wave 1(skywarp, hot rod & iguanus) from Legacy instead of anything from legacy evolution or even United

I have never seen Slyg anywhere in person. I JUST got Sludge and Snarl in the past two weeks, and have had Grimlock, Swoop, and Scarr since last Summer. I feel like I'm gonna get stuck with yet another combiner with one Unobtanium member, which is frustrating considering I have the same issue with Menasor and not being able to find Breakdown. I only ever got to complete Superion and Menasor from Combiner Wars because there was always at least one limb I never found for all of the others, and I never once saw ANY of the Technobots. Makes combiners decidedly frustrating and fairly unappealing to know that I'm far more likely to be left with an incomplete set than to ever find all of them figures at retail.
In your Animated Rollout Command Optimus Prime video parts of Volcanicus can be seen combined with parts of Scraphook, do you have any thoughts on this configuration?
I have been collecting TFs since 01', and I'm a huge fan of all "legends" scale and have had a near complete collection of all released since...these were the 1st legends or core I refused to buy. This is a perfect example to sit this one out, and wait for the KO'rs to fix and make somewhat cool.
As much as I'm spoiled by all of the third party combiners, I still think Volcanicus looks a bit too clunky for me to pick up. ROTF Legends-class Devastator was done really well, so I know Hasbro/Takara can throw together a decent little combiner...maybe I'll wait to see if the pulsecon one fixes up the issues. Great vid as always Toy Guy, thanks for sharing!
snarl looks so great in robot mode it makes me kinda wish they hadnt gone with the combiner thing. if they had the capacity to do them all like him this itd give a lot of 3p legends scale competitors a run for their money
Awesome vid! I am still trying to complete this as for some reason Snarl is the hardest to find in the UK and I ain't paying higher than I paid for the other Dino's haha cannot wait to have volcan jr next to volcanicus potp
I am holding out for Dinoking this year... I missed the boat on the early Dinobots and I'd rather have the more niche character over duplicates of characters I already own, plus I am interested to see how it turns out with proper hands and feet.
I don't know if it's an actual phenomena or if I'm just crazy but with these combiner sets there is usually a character that is notably more fortunate in getting good toys, it's probably just personal taste but with the constructicons it's always bonecrusher, that toyworld one is _lush_ but with dinobots, ignoring grimlock, it's snarl that steps up and has the easiest time being a good toy
I would love a little Grimlock to mess around with on my desk, I might get one of these guys. But Id prefer if he wasnt crippled by being part of a combiner
Almost have the whole collection of these guys. Just waiting on Swoop to arrive. I'm either going to display them all in Dino mode or as Volcanicus. I really think Dino Mode is the strongest mode for each individual across the board not counting combined mode.
I hope Scar is done in the 86 series. I'm not huge into core class personally. Only ones I bought are Tas Kid who is at the correct size in my view. if my niece was older and enjoyed TFs I would get cores for her.
I only got Skarr from this line because gotta love Ankylosaurus bots and how greatly he fits the G1 dinobot look. Now I feel even more vindicated in not trying to get the whole set. I love the combined look but Volcanicus isn't a character/combiner that strikes a major cord with me and those individual bots damn near feel like they're from different lines with how drastically different quality is.
IMO I see little reason for Grimlock’s robot legs to be so thick. The wings/T-Rex chest can tab together over the T-Rex head in leg mode, meaning that slot in the fat legs really isn’t needed. He feels like one of the earlier designs that still needed another draft. Overall, I do like this set though. Upgraded Potp Volcanicus will remain my collection’s main combining Dinobot team, but Dinoking and/or a potential Monstructor will hopefully be great.
Dude, I STILL can't find Swoop! All the sites I frequent are either sold out or PRE-soldout. (That word is unbelievably aggravating!) And he's the only one I'm missing. ARGH!!!
I really wanted this guy but I've only managed to get 5 of them since I'm missing snarl which is so dumb since only one store near me got a single box of the final wave which is how i got my sludge and slug but snarl was sold out, also the slug I got was a return and I know this since he has a small chunk missing from his head.
Honestly, this is probably my fifth time watching this review simply because I love the dinobots and this set as a whole is so aesthetically pleasing to have! I know its HIGHLY unlikely but I wish hasbro could make more dinobots (scorn, slash, strafe, heck maybe even paddles) into G1 core class styles. Now if they could combine with volcanicus that's a different story
Seeing them next to the leader class figures makes me wonder how gigantic Volcanicus could be, if scaled right! But it will take some time until we see that officially from Hasbro. A crazy 3rd party company however could do it sooner. But back to the leader class toys. I really want Scarr as a proper leader class figure. I have anyway hope that we see other dinobots in the close future again. Just scaled right with ss86 dinobots. Slash, Scarr, IDW Strafe and not to forget Paddles could be very interesting figures we haven't seen often, if at all. The Legacy toyline is perfect for such obscure characters. And can you say no to more dinobots? I don't think so.
Firstly, I prefer the Combiner Wars version of Grimlock as the Body, would have loved a Scorn in G1 style Grimlock in Combiner Wars as an alternative body. Along with Paddles or Splash ... based on Sludge. And as for Scarr, always wanted an Ankylosaurus Dinobot, wish there was a CW or UW version of him, maybe using Snarl as a base. With the Red Swoop they had, if they had used Slag as a base for Grimstone or Grimsnarl whatever that Styracosaurus Dinobot was called, well then we'd have gotten 2 Dinobot combiners.
@@ThatToyGuy I haven’t seen them anywhere other than Walmart in Alberta for less than 20$ before taxes. They’re usually all sold out before any sales happen leaving nothing but Iguanus and Hot Rods
As a big Monstructor/Dinoking fan, I am admittedly disappointed in how incomplete the combined mode is. My only hope is that, as you touched on, the inevitable Dinoking has some aggressive partsforming added into it
Interesting idea for a bunch of Core Class releases. Snarl, Swoop, and Grimlock look the best. The rest I feel are only necessary if you want him completed. Also his right fist is kinda sus.
No ankles. I can understand a lot of other choices but no ankles at this point is ridiculous at theses prices. They could at least throw in extra accessories and fx
A fact: the gaps under grimlock and snarl is for the feet and they’re for the upcoming core class dinoking. Dinoking has feet to be accurate to the original design not like at brick legs dinoking

Whereee, can I buy upgrades???
I like how you can see the evolution of the figures
Hello army person here in regards to skarr most tactical/combat medics are unironically some of the coolest/strongest peeps
Bro where are you at cuz every where I go I only find grimlock and scarr on eBay each Dino bot is like 25-35 bucks
This is why we love the DNA upgrade kits
0:30 Yeaaaaah, they be 22$ up here in Canada…
What?? I live in Canada. They def aren't 22 bucks. I paid about 14-16 bucks for each at retail
@@ThatToyGuy I haven’t seen them anywhere other than Walmart in Alberta for less than 20$ before taxes. They’re usually all sold out before any sales happen leaving nothing but Iguanus and Hot Rods
@@ThatToyGuyIn BC core class is 20$ after tax
Depends
I hope they do a leader size scar based on the core mold and have it G1 inspired.
Are you planning on getting the upgrade kit that adds hands and feet?
That early skit gives out Jobby energy
All I’m missing is snarl and swoop I can’t find him anywhere and swoop is 44 bucks on Amazon rip to me and I really wanted swoop 😅
No ankles. I can understand a lot of other choices but no ankles at this point is ridiculous at theses prices. They could at least throw in extra accessories and fx
Looks like what they would combine into? Pretty sure the leader is traditionally the torso.
Legs: Trike & Steg
Torso: Rex & Terra
Arms: Anky & Bronto
Cus it's not meant to be Volcanicus, it's clearly a Dinoking mold which did have the leader be the leg.
The upgrade kit is great for this
I'm very torn on this set because I don't have any core class figure to go with them but I kind of want a small desk combiner
I have questions from hasbro why slag is the leader
I only got swoop and snarl but I might get the others for the novelty
A fact: the gaps under grimlock and snarl is for the feet and they’re for the upcoming core class dinoking. Dinoking has feet to be accurate to the original design not like at brick legs dinoking
Sludge's dino mode looks like shin godzilla when he got on land
Said they looked awful when they came out and still stand by it. Especially when a few years back I got the original volcanicus for not too much more than this.
17:40 TOYS R US IS STILL OPEN?!?!?!
As Volcanicus, I passed hard on the set. I'll wait to see Dinoking before I decide whether or not to grab it.
Very curious to see what Dinoking will look like.
bro where are you getting cores in canada for 12$. i need to move there now XD
He’s probably talking USD
@@andrewkim9848 oh yea probably, havent watched his vids in a whie but didnt he used to use cad in has vids
it would be fun to have more dinos that transform into feet tbh
You should get the dinoking set
