- This video is dedicated to my dad. He and I used to watch these movies together through the years. I edited this video in 1994. It was a fun project to work on for it was a surprise for him. It was also great to be able to be creative on something that wasn't work. Enjoy!

I met Steve Reeves several years before he died. His hair was gray by that time but he still had his trim, muscular physique. He was also a polite and impeccably mannered gentleman.

Steve Reeves really had the most esthetic physique in the bodybuilding area. Awesome genetics, proportions, symetry. He was very good looking!
Very VERY HANDSOME
STEVE had perfect proportions, definitions and muscularity that was functional. As a Doctor I can say so unequivocally. On a human level I can say from meeting him once as a little kid... he was kind, friendly, Inspirational and such an overwhelming personality that yes, as that little boy then, I truly felt that I had met a GREEK GOD FROM OLYMPUS. To this day I SALUTE AND HONOR HIM! He was totally real and an exceptionally decent human being.
Thanks for sharing that story with us. It would have been amazing to meet him! I first heard about Steve in 2017 and I was astonished at the perfect physique he had. In terms of muscularity, nothing looked out of place or oddly stood out. He had the perfect proportions. I’m competing in the INBA World Cup for bodybuilding this November and I’m modeling my physique based on Reeves and following his proportion guidelines.
I googled Steve Reeves’s biography and really respected him for what he accomplished. He lost his father when he was ten. In high school he took up bodybuilding and after graduating fought in the Philippines during the Second World War. He won various bodybuilding contests and took up an acting career in those Italian sword and sandal movies. He even co-starred with Arnold Schwarzenegger in one of them. He was a philanthropist as well. My respects to you, Mr. Reeves, on what you accomplished in your life. You really maximized your strengths and abilities and even served our Nation before you were 20 years old. Rest In Peace!
I read an interview with Reeves back in the day where he recounted meeting Arnold at Jack Lalanne's birthday party. Making polite conversation, Arnold said something like "Steve, you've always been my idol."
Reeves replied "I read your book, you said Reg Park was your idol..."
And Arnold said "That's just because I knew I'd never look like you!"
They both laughed and became firm friends
Steve's life's character was moral. Arnold, not so much.
'I met him about 15 years ago for the first time. We were at Jack La Lanne's 65th birthday party, and Schwarzenegger came up to me and said, 'Steve, you've always been an idol of mine. ' I looked him straight in the eye, half-smiling, and said, 'Don't give me that crap, Arnold. I read your book, and Reg Park was your idol. 'He said, 'Well... only because I knew I couldn't look like you.'

***** l am his great fan and have a certain experience due the fact l started training in gym at 24 now l am 61 and still train ,but despite he was surely not a steroid dependent ,at his time people that used to take part at hight level competitions ALREADY used steroids ,surely far far less than now ,but belive me if you wanted have chances to win or simply compete at that level you had to do like the others so......but surely he trained the most of the time without ,and was already a good matter ,but COMPLETALY cleen alas not .......sorry for my bad english but l am italian.

When both legends and actors got into films full time such as the last Hercules roles for Steve and Conan and Terminators for Arnold they lost much of their original contest bulks and although Arnold retained some of his heavy duty look, both Champs are actually pretty much alike in physique. However, Steve really showed that natural and aesthetic well defined look...!!!
Steve Reeves wins hands down. He was truly a Greek God in every sense of the word. Not only did he have the greatest physique of all time but he was the best looking man to ever walk the earth. I am an Arnie fan...but he was no Steve Reeves.

I believe that Reeves will prevail over more generations. Arnold was hard working but would use whatever trick he could use to further him, while Reeves was a true man who stood for what he believed.
I also went to the movies with my dad when Steve Reeves first arrived as Hercules and we saw all subsequent Reeves movies. Watching your video brought back fond memories. thanks for down loading.

Bo Derek called Steve Reeves an "11" I agree with her. Steve was a handsome man no doubt about it. Arnold in comparison didn't have those classic good looks but he shouldn't feel bad about it few have. Steve Reeves was a hero and a role model to many a young lad back in the day when masculine virtue was prized.

There is kind of 3 types of show in bodybuilding. The posing, the mover (mostly in movie) and feat. (like Eugene Sandow that was also a strongman or Jujimufu.
I think i will also roots for the "mover" bodybuilder. I personnaly admire a lot what Brad Pitt achieves in Troy.
I love to be in a gym. The Best physique in all the sport was Davey Boy Smith.

Steve Reeves developed a magnificent body, respecting the aesthetics and symmetry, it developed quickly, naturally and was the inspiration for many great bodybuilders. In his time he had steroids but always refused.

Steve slimmed down for his movie roles.He was markedly bigger in his completion days as can be seen in photos' taken at that time. His physique was definitely natural but above all he had the "shape" and was clearly a very handsome guy. To summarise he had it all!

Reeves proportions are unparalleled. Even today if you saw a man walking along a beach who looked like Steve Reeves heads would turn. Women would want to be with him. Men would want to be like him.

Steve Reeves is an original. He did it all without drugs and he still looks way better. And just to be clear, he had a "classic physique" NOT the greek god build. Difference being the V taper. Eugene Sandow had the greek god build.
The ironic part is Steve looked even better than a greek god sculpture IMO because his body looked more like the golden ratio. Thus, he was "golden" as we say!

Alex Rodriguez he's definitely natural in the early-mid 50s. But after the release of dbol in 1958 you can't be 100% he didn't take it.
Static Pupsik at the time he was at his peak there weren't anabolic steroids; and they weren't really used by athletes until way much later when people figured out if they worked on sick people they would work better on healthy people; so yeah, Reeves was all natural.

Reeves had that classic Greek God look about him and even without the beard he was very handsome and add that physique, we are still talking about him today. He had a great rich baritone voice, but voices were dubbed back then for the American audiences as these films were made in Italy and it was easier and cheaper to dub them with unknown to the public voice over talents.
Reeves even studied voice with Opera legend George London, and had a similar great Bass-Baritone speaking and singing voice.
So did whoever dubbed for Reeves in the first Hercules film, but Reeves' own voice would also have been fine in it.

I was told that in Reeves movie career time that the cameras were adjusted to make actors look slimmer. The people and scenery do look somewhat compressed. Reeves was actually wider than he appears on film.

There is such a thing as a genetic superior. and he was never below 10% bodyfat. you can see it in his pics he is pretty smooth.
Steroids didnt really come into bodybuilding until the mid to late 50s in America. by that time Reeves was retired.

It is IMPOSSIBLE to compare Reeves with Schwarzenegger. First, Arnold LIVED on steroids... why do you think he needed a quadruple bypass in his middle age?? Second, Reeve's was MUCH more handsome, his face better than most Hollywood movie stars, in fact, the best. Also, Arnold had to lose a lot of weight to do "Conan the Barbarian," because when you're that bulky, you look bad on screen and don't move well. Reeve's physique was MUCH more appealing to women and a larger movie audience (28" waist when he won Mr. America). It's all about symmetry.

Erik Ramaekers You don't have to look like today's bodybuilders to be on steroids. There are A LOT of people that you would say aren't on steroids which are on steroids. Reeves injured himself (dislocated shoulder) shooting that chariot scene. Story has it he was never the same after.

As it is, though, Christopher Reeve (not related) was the most perfect of the actors who did play the role, with George Reeves (also not related) in close 2nd place.
Pete Lupus, btw, once played Superman in a video promotional for the USAF.
And I remember Bob Holiday, who played - and sang - the role, in the musical "It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Superman!", long ago.

If had to choose wich body i would endorse to have. I would say Steve Reed. He had a more natural body. Body building in Steve time was still in its infancy at his time during early 50s 60s. By the time Arnold Schwarzenegger came around they were tapping into special food supplements and training became more advanced. Plus Body Builders became more full time wich also aloud them to grow and tap into more muscles.
