    Exactly the thing I needed. Stuck with no locksmith available. Called the local auto store, picked up the new ignition, installed it as easily as in the video and back in action in under an hour from watching this. I swear. Thanks man

    Great vid, thanks for your help! Lost my key as well. Inserted the new key into the old cylinder and turned it a few times and it worked. Was able to depress the release tab and slide the new cylinder in. To anyone having issues getting everything to work, it may take some persuasion so just keep working the key around.

    There is a hole in the plastic shroud under the tab on the ignition cylinder. you don't need to remove the shroud. you just stick a nail in the hole and the cylinder will pop out. you also don't need to remove the plastic piece. The entire job should take less than 60 seconds and aside from the nail, require no tools. Just remember that the key on the new cylinder need to be in the middle position. you can check this by depressing the tab on the bottom, if it pushes in, they key is the right spot.
    with that said, this video was helpful and thank you for making it.

    Same thing happened to me and my 98 TJ: no key. I was not lucky. The key that came with the new cylinder did not work. I watched other videos in which people drilled out the pin from the face and just made a freaky mess. What I did was drill out the pin, the catch itself and it worked. In fact, it was a piece of cake. I hope this helps someone else who lost their key and doesn't have the key code--which are not maintained by the manufacturer after 10 years.

    If that random key turns your ignition why not just use that random key also if you lost your key how are you supposed to turn the ignition lock to take the cylinder out

    Excellent video except there is a hole in the bottom steering wheel plastic cover where you can insert a small Phillips screwdriver and push to release the cylinder locking tab. This saves removing any panels. Worked great on my 1998 Jeep wrangler.

    Thanks for the video. My issue is that “any” Jeep TJ key will start my ‘98 squirrel master (possibly any key that will fit for that matter). 😳 I plan to remove the lock cylinder & have the tumblers re-matched to my key or replace the cylinder altogether as per the video. Anyone experience a similar issue? I discovered this when I purchased full doors with keys and discovered those keys started my Jeep. Thanks

    I have a 94 jeep. Just bought brand new lock cylinder and ignition switch. Cant seem to get them connected. Any advice. Disclaimer: I've done these before with no o.g problem. I don't understand why these aren't just sliding in like before.

    Great video - thanks!!
    At the beginning you rolled/turned the key half way.....how come..?
    My old key slides into ignition but won't turn. Seems like the steering is locked. I'm.wondering if a new key, from a new lock and cylinder kit, will allow me to turn the it - as you did.

    • @corymeares4424

      Inserting the key and rolling it forward a bit allows that little tab that pops in the bottom hole (at the 2:25 mark) to be depressed so that you can pull the cylinder out. Try inserting your key but not 100% and continuously try to twist is as you insert it, some of your cylinder's teeth may be worn.

    My issue is I can’t turn my ignition switch with my key. I ended trying with pliers and f’d up the plastic cover which looks a little different than yours (97 TJ) anyway if I can’t turn the key I can’t remove the ignition switch right? Any suggestions?

    • @corymeares4424
      @corymeares4424  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My best guess is inserting your key at different depths and continuously trying to turn it and wiggle it as you go. Also, make sure the cylinder lock isn't inadvertently engaged (if you have one) referring to the little button you click to continue rolling the cylinder back to remove the key, if its a manual transmission.

  • @greggrusnak6094

    So why didn't you put the new key in, turn it to the Run position, then take your Screwdriver and put it in the 3rd hole you skipped over as it directly lines up to the Ignition Detent. Push up towards the key and then pull the Ignition and Key out of its housing then take off the Trim piece. Take the new key and ignition cylinder Replace the Trim Piece put the key in it and turn it to Run position slide it back in the Hole and turn the key to Off and remove key.. Done, no need to take anything Apart for 97 - 06 Jeep all Models

    Quick question. My radio and turn signals don’t work when I turn on my Jeep, but if I mess with the key when it is running, I can get them to come back on. Would replacing this possibly fix that or is it more complicated?

    • @corymeares4424
      @corymeares4424  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So that issue has to do with the actuating rod that the lock cylinder pushes into the ignition switch. When you roll your key forward, the cylinder pushes a rod connected to the ign switch from the off position, past the run position, and into the start position. After starting, the rod returns the switch back to the run position but if it doesn't travel far enough back, the electrical system won't engage. You'll need to either adjust your ignition switch position on the column ( its made to be adjustable and inevitably slips out of place over time) or once you start the jeep, slowly roll the key back until the electrical system activates before the off position. Hope that helps some.

      @@corymeares4424 Not necessarily my radio sometimes doesn't work but will work if I push in on the key. I noticed my key could be pulled out in all positions and realized that pushing it in harder made the radio come back on. So its not just the rod.

    • @robhdez5048
      @robhdez5048 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Little late on the reply, but it boils down to a security issue as Corey indicated. Apparently when your lock cylinder tumblers wear out, any key that fits will start it right up. If you have the key, an automotive locksmith should be able to re-match/build the tumblers. The value in going this route is that you will be able to continue using the same key for doors, tailgate etc. without adding another key to the key ring.

    • @corymeares8564
      @corymeares8564 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you don't have the key, try drilling the key hole with a 5/16" or 3/8" drill bit to obliterate the tumblers inside and you should be able to turn it with ease.
