    Bass and bass drum in lockstep - it’s very basic stuff but it’s still a joy to hear it done right.

    As a lifelong jaco fanatic, I gotta say I really love the way him and herbie play together. Where him and zawinul could be like a hurricane playing, him and herbie could be like a calm summer shower. Both combos were great. Thank you for the post.

    Jazz Video Guy... Hola qué onda. ??.. Me encantan tus comentarios siempre justos precisos y moderados.
    Saludo amical y respetuoso desde Francia.

    It's so pleasurable to hear Jaco showing restraint and support in this context, with little bursts of embellishment when appropriate.

      fascinging perspective on his playing here

    • @robsou64
      @robsou64 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely! Although Jaco was capable of showing great bravado on his own albums, he was often a self-restrained yet very capable rythm section guy when playing with others bands. A perfect example of that would be the tune 4 A.M on Herbie's album Mr Hands.

    "Borrowed" would be more like it. Saw the two with Joni, (and Tony Williams) in Berkeley 5/79. This was not long after the "Trio of Doom" trip to Havana. Fantastic afternoon outdoors. Richie Cole opened, having just lost the great Eddie Jefferson 2 weeks prior. Replaced that day by Dizzy!

      Joni's backing band on the Shadows and Light dvd (same tour, from Santa Barbara, I think) has to be one of the greatest backing bands of all time, a fabulous show and where no one is upstaging the others in any bad sense.

    Caught this band live in Hartford Ct. back then. The tune Gentle Thoughts was co-written w/ Wah Wha Watson but like you said, this tour was as a quartet so no guitar.

    I think approaching the 2:51 mark, the one point that may have been missed was that Jaco first solo album came out in 1976 and Herbie was brought in by the producer of Jaco's album, therefore their first important encounter was when Herbie was playing on Jaco's album and Jaco was the "leader", whereas, with Weather Report, Zawinul and Shorter were the bosses (good cop, bad cop,...if you will) and was already an established group with those 2 cats as the clear co-leaders. By March 1977, "Heavy Weather" was released and the tune "Birdland" was a hit (for a jazz-fusion composition) and Jaco was a known bass phenom at that point given his solo album, so the word "borrow" or "borrowing" does not really apply.

    • @JazzVideoGuy
      @JazzVideoGuy  ปีที่แล้ว

      Well, I understand, but that's what Herbie said in his intro.

    This also shows a great side of Jaco being a great sideman and respecting Herbie's music, and just being 'Jaco'. Highly respectful on his part.

    Odd to hear Jaco not hearing all the parts and doubling all the lines and just grooving over the chord changes until he starts reharmonizing at 10:00.

    bit of a clickbait title but cool tune

    • @JazzVideoGuy
      @JazzVideoGuy  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Would you be interested in a job? I need someone to write titles that get people to click and then watch my videos. Let me tell, it's a very very challenging job becuse no matter what you write, people will ALWAYS be screaming clickbait and then threatening to unsubscribe. Also you will average about $1.30 an hour doing TH-cam related work. Drop me an email with your qualifications and I'll submit your application to "The Committee." One other thing, you have to be prepared to be the subject of considerable racial hatred and animosity. For example, I'm Jewish and regularly get viewers who address me as that "Nigger Loving Kike."

    Great tune. I nominate Speak like a Child as the greatest Herbie tune. It's a tough choice.
