@@valeriesponies-equine8944 yeah about thirty minutes, unless I'm going to ride or exercise. Mucking, grooming, making grain and filling hay nets takes 30
Buying horses is the cheapest part of owning them. And this is a great video for anyone who complains that board is expensive. Although as a midwesterner... this doesn't even hit half the fun of trying to manage horses in the winter/spring... We currently have about a foot of snow & ice pack in all our pastures. Yesterday the temperature was 15F, tomorrow the temp is supposed to be 50F with rain.... that will be fun.
There are days I really miss my old full care boarding barn. But I love having 100% say over how my horses are cared for and getting to see them every day.
When I had my horse at home we set up our fence by finding folks that were getting rid of fence posts and wood on Facebook Marketplace. We borrowed a friend's truck once a month and bought hay local. We had to go get the bales out of the field ourselves which was super fun. Our neighbor has a huge horse property around the corner and he was kind enough to let us dump our manure with his (he was a truck driver and could haul it out himself), but in the future we're just going to pay for a second garbage can and let them deal with it (which they will do!) So that's a weekly pickup which is perfect for one horse. I trim my own horse hooves and give my own yearly vaccinations. We have an old Rodeo with a hitch and in future we're going to keep an eye out for a functional two horse trailer so we can save on vet fees for getting teeth floated as that's the only thing I can't do. So all in all it wasn't that much cheaper to keep my horse at home, it was WAY more work but I could ride literally whenever I wanted. Oh also I live out in AG country so there's literally just miles and miles of canal roads that are legal for public use. Biking, jogging, dog walking, horseback riding. So no arena but tons of trails. 🤷🏼♀️
What does AG country mean? Agricultural? Also "We had to go get the bales out of the field ourselves which was super fun." I genuinely can't tell if this is sarcasm or not, lol. (genuine questions, btw, not trying to be rude)
I ran across your channel and after watching this video I couldn't wait to subscribe. Your HISTERICAL and I can relate to all your horse concerns. I'm retired, too old, from my horse riding years but I'm reliving them through you. Can't wait for the next video. Much love
My friend used to live in a rural small town where that worked brilliantly because they had 2 barns in town and a vet in the next one over so lots of people kept their horses on their own property or even just kept them on their own pastures in the summer and boarded them at the barn over winter. But that's with everything being 5 minutes away on foot. In that case getting to the ferrier just meant walking your horse over when he was at the barn anyway. Same with the vet and such, they'd have their days to come to the barns and anyone else would just show up there.
I can relate! Fitted my place for my horse years ago to escape a bad situation. I'm on my second horse here and despite the effort of getting up at 4 am to clean and feed before work I wouldn't trade it for the world!
My dad said I can get a horse in a couple of years when we get good land. I love watching your comedy videos. I still take lessons and do barn chores so I can almost relate to this! 👍
This is hilarious 😂 so true! I boarded my horse forever and even worked at most of the barns and now she’s at home and there’s so much property maintenance! And don’t even get me started on winters with livestock 😂
Ahhh so entertaining, as always 🤣🤣 Feeling this hardcore right now, as we finally got to bring our new horses home! But we're at a self care barn... gotta buy aaaaaaall the stuff...... and pay board 😆 the pain is real Also, Kazi is always so cute!
😂 I feels that my husband and I brought our horse home back in the December and we always have to fix his fence😂 not that bad but once in a while and luckily we have a truck so we go get his hay ourselves for now. It is nice having your horse home but it's different getting used to it.
People ask me, “how much does it cost to have a horse?” I tell them it is like having a kid, it isn’t just the kid but all the stuff you have to buy to take care of them… at least I don’t have to save for their college! Saving sooo much money 🤣
This is so relatable I have my horse at my house too and I don’t know anything different! It’s bad when we go out of town, though. And the fence problem is a reoccurring one 😂
With 1 horse, it makes sense to board, but horses are like potato chips, you can’t just have 1 and I do save substantial $$$ keeping the 5 😳🙄 of them at home. Luv your videos- so funny 😂
This is so relateible 😂 it takes me so long to look after my black stallion river and my friends bay gelding socks! So it takes me a while! Love your vids! Ps Kazi is such a funny horse!
I'm so glad my dad is our 'farrier' and we're able to make the hay ourselves now. It saves a lot of money and our horses don't get sick because of bad quality hay (sadly happened before)
Actually we do save money😂 sure the costs were extremely high for building everything but the stable is self-sufficient, we make our own hay (one horse can be fed with this for a hole year), we use green compost for the stable, so we dont have many wet spots. If the water hose is frozen we still have a creek. And since our gelding (29y) died last month😢 and we have another horse we have more money because we don't need so much additional food. Our 2 horses (13y and 14y) need 1/8 of that what our 29 year old needed.
My friend lives out in country so she does this with her pony but I live in the city so I would have to board but by what she tells me this seems very relatable
I’m getting a horse soon (hopefully!) and I’m so excited! I’m keeping my beautiful paint in my back yard (multiple acres) and I’m prepared for my horse. Wish me luck!
You might see if any vets in your area do patient boarding, you could have everything done while you are on vacation, fecals, coggins, vaccines, teeth. Our old vet liked us to do that when we went on vacation because she could work on our horses when she was not busy.
Also, if you only have one horse, and you move it out of a stable with a bunch of horses to your place, you'd better think about getting another horse soon XD
Haha, this really is funny. I actually have my ponies at home and yes, it's heavy what you really have to pay every month. But I wouldn't have it any other way because it's great to be able to look out the window and watch your own horses. Being able to go out and interact with them whenever I like, even if it's the middle of the night. It's always fun with the mud to muck out but we don't have to pay for the poop to be transportet away. We live right next to a field and our neighbour helps out with maintaining it. So the horsepoop goes there twice a year and we don't have to do anything except for keeping it accecible for a tractor. I do miss having a riding arena though. My ponies are only trained outside on the fields and roads, they don't even know what a riding arena is XD
