Great work pete very interesting to watch you getting gear box sorted and engine running and sound just ticking over sounds so good also like your exhaust smoke puff coming out of back fantastic work can,t wait for next video
Has come a long way from when you first showed it to us! You get more done when you have a full time job than I do being retired. No need explaining to me what your plans for it are, like asking a mountain climber why he climbs a mountain, it’s because he can.
Hi Geoffrey! Surprising as it is, this boat is far closer to getting in the water than any of the others in my yard!! So my 'new toy' excitement is motivating me quite well at the moment! Ha ha!!!
@ I know the new toy experience well, that’s why my yard is full of “new toys”. When I saw the start I wondered if you would do the outside work on the hull and then get it in the water before doing all the inside work?
Pete mate, that impeller is fine, plenty of life in it 🤣 I had to laugh at your impeller joke. I have seen then like that and have seen them stuck in their housings, spinning on their drive shaft etc.
A good step in the right direction for sure, I never get tired of the jump back in surprise when diesels start after a long lay off or a rebuild, lol I still do it after twenty odd years lol
Thanks Pete! Not sure if I understood you right, so just to clarify... The gearbox I rebuilt was the Port side, the one I started was the Starboard side. So yeah, both box's are good! :-) Thanks for the comment!
There's been a few Aussie boat rebuilters come and gone over the last few years, hope you get to finish yours. Just wondering are you gonna rebuild that trailer, love to see content on that as well👍
Hi George, I'm still trying to decide if I should put another patch on a trailer that's already an epic 'patchwork quilt', or build a new trailer. Either way, it will be an episode (or two) on here.
That motor sounds really good , not sure what the hino engines run but I had a similar rev/ stall prob with a diesel tractor and it turned out it had to have oil in the injector pump for the governor
The o-ring goes under the plate the coupling nut sits on. Some people use sealer on the splines to seal against oil coming thru the spines. We use Permatex Aviation Sealer on the face to face parts of the oil pump and shaft preload cover. Can mix with oil unlike RTV sealers etc. Are they EH700 Hino's? If so bloody good engines. Only one issue with some of them. The injector pumps might ne fitted with minimum/maximum speed governors. Can find out by putting water thru the engines and bringing rpms up to say around 1200-1500ish rpm and see if they rev up higher by themselves. If so they have min/max governors. Fine in a truck as its under control of drivers foot. But can be a nightmare when manouvering in a marina etc. If they dont and will sit luvly and stable at any speed right up to max high idle then they have all-speed governors fitted.... total bonus.
Hi Mr Matui. I had a look under the plate you're talking about when I was assembling it and I couldn't see any room for any kind of 0 ring? I'm very tempted to strip it down again, as I just noticed some hard facing off the output gear. My thinking is, now's the time to fix it!! I think these donk's have the 'all speed' gov' in them? I didn't notice any 'over speed' while holding the throttle steady. My other boat has the same model engine (yep EH700) that if fitted straight out of a truck and that engine does race away just like you describe. Although in that boat, it's kinda easy enough to manage. I've just pulled all 4 heat exchange units off this arvo with the intent of acid washing them this weekend. I found some advice you gave another gentleman on a different channel which I thought was awesome!! I think you should start your own channel. I promise you, I would subscribe!! Thanks again! :-)
@@pete-mate3524 Good these two have the all-speed governors. The min/max in the other boat is manageable but can be a right bugga at times. Seen a lot of boats with them drive up onto the marinas if owners get a bit too happy on the throttles. PRM output couplings can be a bit of a weak point esp for leaking oil thru the splines and wearing the splines too. Sum boxes came with silicon in place of the o-ring. The o-ting comes in a rebuild kit so may have been put in there before. Such a good simple, reliable, nuggety little gearbox. The gearsets/shafts can vary a lot on PRM's the earlier boxes were the models 401 and 601 then there are the two u have. They also had bigger diameter fine input shaft splines compared to the smaller diameter coarse splines on yours. Must make sure if you change the gear that everything is from an exact clone to yr model box. If the coolers have xinc anodes in them try to find the highest quality/purest zincs you can for them. There are a lot from China and Canada that while good just vanish extremely quickly. A 95% plus pure zinc anode will last a lot lot longer while still doing its job. I guess its going to be trailered most places so this may not apply but we fit 3 way valves to the raw water skin fitting for two reasons. One if the boat starts to sink you can shift the valve into the open position and use it as a bige pump or both engines if needed and they will shift a hige amount of water. Second you can fit a garden hose adaptor to the valve to flush all saltwater out of the coolers. Extends their life no end. Simple n cheap to do and has saved many a boat and saved a lot of owners frim huuuuge bills for repair/replacement of oil coolers, heat xchangers, even raw water cooled exhaust manifolds and especially water cooled exhaust housings and the mixing elbows/risers on anything turboed.
Hi Mr Dennis, the dowel still fit in the hole with room to spare. The burr wasn't interfering with it, so I decided to leave it be. The 'end plate' clamps down on the spacer tubes on the bolts. Thank you for the question. :-)
Magnificent episode mate. Really enjoyed it. Thanks for the great shoutout too. They are a great reliable workhorse engine those Hino’s
Thanks Steve! Yeah, I've got the same model engine in the other boat (Markudla 3). It pushes that big lump along quite nicely.
Great progress Pete. You will be cruisin out to the reef in next to no time.
Thanks Brian, I certainly hope so!
Great work pete very interesting to watch you getting gear box sorted and engine running and sound just ticking over sounds so good also like your exhaust smoke puff coming out of back fantastic work can,t wait for next video
Thank you Philip! I certainly breathed a sigh of relief when I saw her running smooth. One engine down, one to go!!
Good to see a bloke on youtube who knows how to pull a torque wrench properly, one long steady pull to click. 😉
Thanks Alan, they're only small bolts, so I was a bit hesitant!! All worked out in the end.
as a fitter/turner/toolmaker observing ,now your starting to look a lot more competent, well done mate, remember eye protection always.
Good job Pete. Going well so far. All the best mate
Thanks Mr Roberts, appreciate the support.
Hello Pete, That engine sounds good also the gear box well done.
Thanks Robin, I'm pretty happy with the outcome.

Great video Pete ! Those gear boxes are very unique . The engine sounded good , and started right up. 🌵
Thanks Scott! Yeah, the gearbox is pretty simple, which is a good thing, I reckon. Fingers crossed the other side fires up just as easy.
Pete mate, that impeller is fine, plenty of life in it 🤣 I had to laugh at your impeller joke. I have seen then like that and have seen them stuck in their housings, spinning on their drive shaft etc.
Ha ha! Yes, and we know those missing blades are all stuck in the heat exchanger!! (Dang, another job!!)
@@pete-mate3524 At least when the project is finished you will be able to head out to the reef.
A good step in the right direction for sure, I never get tired of the jump back in surprise when diesels start after a long lay off or a rebuild, lol I still do it after twenty odd years lol
Ha ha! With 24 volts, it also gave me a bit of a shock when I took the wire off. But yes, that was genuine surprise!!
G'Day Pete, ya doin some great content, real life stuff, keep the vids rolling in, can't wait until you pass the red and green makers,
Thanks Rick, 'splash day' feels a lot closer, now!
Hey mate another great video mate l just hope the other gear box is as good a condition keep up the good work old mate 👍
Thanks Pete! Not sure if I understood you right, so just to clarify... The gearbox I rebuilt was the Port side, the one I started was the Starboard side. So yeah, both box's are good! :-) Thanks for the comment!
That engine sounded great, mate.👍
Cheers! 🍺
Thanks Luis!! :-)
Awesome mate
Australia is watching now
Keep up the good work ❤❤
Cheers! Glad to have you along for the ride! 🙂

Thanks for the tip, Rod. I think these are pressure fed by the engine, but I will definitely check. My assumption is that it was still cold?

Awesome work pete onwards and upwards
Thanks Steve!! :-)
Nice job mate!
Cheers! It's always a good feeling when something actually works!
Great luck! Good on ya!
Cheers!! I'm feeling pretty lucky right now!!
Maaaaateee bloody great vid 👌
Thanks Charlie, I'm glad you liked it!!
Well done pete dont know how you work in that heat 🥵
Ha ha!! Me neither
Good stuff mate, stoked for ya
Cheers for the support, mate!!
Awsum! Just sat down for a cupa!
Thanks Luke! I hope it was a good cupa!!
Sounds great!
Thanks Tony! :-)
Purring like a Kitten. Hino are fantastic engines. Bullet proof.
Thanks David, I used to work at Hino for about 7 years. Their engines are awesome!
That engine is purring like a kitten.
Hi Mr Jambo. Yep, I got pretty lucky, so far.
Got to love a win
Ha ha!! Two wins. The engine and the gearbox!!
congrats Mate, one worry out of the way.
Thanks Tony, these drivelines were my primary concern. Hoping the worst is behind me.
Awesome wins there m8
Thanks Bob!! :-)
Why didn't you drill out the bur so the dowel for the spring to sit properly
