Your Dad is a sane man. That is my highest compliment. It's such a nice thing to see a father and son working together in harmony. Your mum''s a bit of a diamond too. You are a lucky man, Mark.
Doing a project with your Dad is a bounty - The times I spent with my Dad are fond memories. it looks like you really enjoy doing things together. It's all good.
Been following you for many years (about 20k), the attraction of this channel is sailing on a shoestring - as soon as you buy a new engine at full price instead of a cheap one from eBay you’re buying your way out of problems - that’s not why I’m here. Mums and dad’s cleaning, organising and mechanical interludes are wonderful, family support is another dynamic that makes this channel something we all relate to. As the channel grows, please stay true your roots.
You guys saying financially it isn't worth fixing that engine. I think the knowledge Mark got and hanging out learning from Dad is Priceless. Especially if Mark's going sailing in some exotic places We hope and there not being a Marine Shop near.
For anyone else having problems with any small fourstroke (outboards, generators and such) where it has to crank for a long time before starting (and no spark during that time) and also stalling when going from high rpm to idle, there's often an oil pressure switch on those engines, it cuts ignition when oil pressure (or level) is low, disconnect that switch, and if it starts you either have a bad switch or low oil or a bad oil pump. DO NOT run the engine without that switch, you could do a lot of damage if it has low oil pressure.
@@WildlingSailing I can't guarantee that there is an oil pressure switch, but the symptoms you had would make sense, I've seen those switches on pretty much every 4 stroke generator and 4 stroke pump, looking for wiring diagrams for 9.9hp yamahas those switches also seem to appear on those
Yamaha don't have it so it will have no spark. It will just go into limp mode. Same if it gets too hot it will go into limp mode. Still runs but wont rev.
The expense and effort may seem like a new engine would be better but you will have to maintain those engines in strange places so the education was definitely worth it.
What an awesome Dad you have , extremely knowledgeable and calm and a fantastic relationship with you too - keep up the great work documenting your journey
Your parents are awesome , please don't be like the other sailing channels please finish the boat before you go off into great blue. They always regret it later and end up quitting sailing and social media , I love your boat and fact you have done it your way not what everyone else wanted you to do or buy. Your inspiration to all of us , Thank You
Nice to have a Dad with the skills he has. Miss mine and he would be so helpful sorting out my old diesel engine. Keep the focus and you will get there.
Happy New Year! Glad you sorted out the outboard. They can be quite frustrating and fiddly but you got there in the end. All the best to you and your family.
so happy to see that engine finally work properly!!! looking forward to seeing you back onboard! and yeah it has been cold in the UK, I'm in Cornwall and its been very cold.
Iv'e learned - the hard way that education is EXPENSIVE and invaluable when you need it BUT you MUST pay for it somehow, either by forking out cash and attending courses, or by buying cheap and spending huge time and frustration figuring it all out (and sometimes chucking out the original purchase) or by feeling the physical and financial pain of banging things up and causing damage. To each their own, thank you for sharing your lessons with us.
Hi Mark watching from Sydney Australia and have been watching for some years. Enjoy what you’re doing and really enjoy watching your dad work on engines. It’s great fun. Your mum and dad are terrific. All the best mate. Hang in there.
Congratulations! You not only fixed a very pesky electrical problem, you gained lots of knowledge about your engine. As the years go by you will learn to cherish the time spent working with your Dad.
I find it so relaxing watching you and your Dad problem solve. Great video thank you. Shout out to the Cif Cleaning Queen - no doubt looking after you in the background. xx
Just think of all you have learned about those engines having a bad one. In the furniture when your on board and there is a hiccup with one, your will have a greater knowledge base to draw upon to solve that problem! Can’t wait for your adventures this year! Happy new year!
Bloody marvellous episode to start 2025. Great job and more time with your dad, precious times. I even shouted when it started properly. I have a load of old box spanner’s which have got me out of a hole many times when a modern socket set was too big to fit. Ace job guys. Andy UK
Greeting from Thailand in Loei city where I live , I have a 25 Ft sailing boat and had a wonderful and exiting solo sailing from Spain to Greece. Wishing you a very Happy New Year to you and your wonderful parents
Every inch of that troubleshooting and the issues you solved before it is worth 4 times a new engine. Youd pay a small fortune for this level of understanding of how the engine work. A warranty on a new engine wont help you in the middle of nowhere. Great work lads.
Well done, and well spent time during Christmas time with your family nack home. Think its important for a such long project tomtake a step back and relax and reflect. I am impressed by you taking on such a project and how you progressed in skills in so many areas. I am from Sweden, where its normally much colder than in the UK, and cant really understand why you have so cold in your workshops, and using such primitive diesel heaters. Why not a air to air heatpump?. Great that you find the root cause to the engine problems. As the old bugger i am, problably even a few years older than your father, i will be happy when you start sailing, but a bit jealous 😊. Keep up and enjoy life along your journey.
Really like watching you & your Dad working on engines. He's so calm and explains things so well. We are getting snow today in Greensboro, N.C. USA. & also Texas. 😁❄️💖 Take care. 🇺🇸
We didn’t have a decent snowfall in Texas, such a disappointment. We still have a couple of months to go however. Great to see that Texas flag hanging in your garage along with the old Chevy (64 model I think).
Good to see you back on the job, a break is necessary so we all understand that. Hope you are thinking about building a pilot house before you take off sailing south
that alloy block that the telltale routes through actually warms the incoming fuel a bit, to promote better combustion. It also cools the tell-tale water slightly.
Mark , I run a Yamaha 9.9 4 stroke out in the Caribbean. My advice would be to fit an additional fuel filter /water separator.in your tank fuel feed. We had lots of problem here, cut out/poor running because four strokes not liking the poor fuel over here . Most people run 2strokes here because of the poor fuel. The carbs on four strokes have smaller jet holes and they get blocked more easily with water and dirt in the fuel here. Just sayin …
So glad the engines working well again. It really angers me when manufacturers overcharge so much for their parts. There’s no earthly reason they should be 10 times more expensive.
I hope you took note of all the tools used to disassemble the engine, and make sure you have em on board! There's no bigger feeling of anguish and regret than desperately needing a specific tool and not having it.
Wish I had seen these videos earlier I have had 4 Yamaha 9.9 high thrust outboards in my time and all 4 have had CDI unit faults. It seems to be a weak point in those engines hopefully It's the last time it happens to you. No regrets in the journey of dealing with the issues on that engine though knowing your way around and being able to trace every wire and component in there is a huge piece of mind when you're out there!
What an awesome team - you are..!! Steve just whips up the flywheel brace and hub puller in his spare time, and they are engineering masterpieces..!! Dynamic 😊 And great such good outcome on the electircals. I'm sure the relays won't be overheating so much now. (fingers crossed) Glad you are feeling recharged again- no doubt thanks to Mary's TLC and Mum-care package..!! Love you all. ❤ See ya next time. Grant Sjoberg
oh boy such drama on one engine, but well done sorting it out, finally a reliable engine, happy new year to you and your family, love your Dad, so nice, cant wait to see you sailing again, good luck for 2025.
With those types of engines the CDI units are always my first suspects. Well done lads. I still like the old color tune in surprised Steve don't have one they are old school . Basically a glass spark plug so you can see the color of the burning fuel and adjust it perfectly. I brought my old one with me when I emigrated to the States.
Missed your vids mate, stoked to catch up again! Happy for you you had a great break with family, get as many cuppa's with the oldies as possible, you'll miss them when they're gone. Goodluck back at the yard and greetings from Oz 🤙😜🍻
Bonsoir , enfin ce moteur récalcitrant fonctionne , votre papa est est bon mécanicien et passionné tout comme vous . Je vous souhaites une bonne année à vous et tout ceux qui vous entourent . Hervé
Good to see you back Mark, we all need some time at home with family and friends from time to time. Great progress with the engine, a relief to have it sorted finally. HNY!!
Hi. I love troubleshooting videos! The more difficult the problem, the more obscure the fix the better. I learn from every one. I think you will get a really good response to this video and that will put you back on track. Good luck and keep at it. You are doing great.
May be too late but most small outboards have a bolt near the tilt and steering gimbal that allows you to set tension or friction so it remains straight and requires more or less effort to steer. Tell pop, sweet 65ish chev.
Love the car/truck collection in your dad's garage. Glad you are recharged and feeling better, looking forward to seeing more videos in the near future! Keep up the good work.

Providing your dad isn't the sort to clamp crunch or hit your fingers ..... You hold it son🤏🏼.... I'll play it oops! 😬😂.
Everyone needs a dad like yours ❤
…..and everyone needs a son like Mark!
Your Dads a genius. He should have his own tv show.

Had that problem with a diesel generator. The connector to the low oil switch broke due to age n vibration. Fixed it n the unit started n runs well.
Yamaha don't have it so it will have no spark. It will just go into limp mode. Same if it gets too hot it will go into limp mode. Still runs but wont rev.
Only in four stroke engines
Surprisingly interesting and entertaining. Your dad's a star
I enjoyed watching you and your father troubleshoot the engine.
Dad to the rescue. Happy New Year to the Wildling family 👍
The expense and effort may seem like a new engine would be better but you will have to maintain those engines in strange places so the education was definitely worth it.
💯👍
Often better the devil you know.
Congratulations on your hard work. So happy you and your dad found out the problem.
What an awesome Dad you have , extremely knowledgeable and calm and a fantastic relationship with you too - keep up the great work documenting your journey
That was fun to watch! Your dad should start a channel teaching folks garage basics. Glad you're home with the family, love you guys!
Your father is a legend and a pleasure to watch - you are very lucky to have him :D
Oh, I’m glad that you’re back. I know it’s been Christmas, but I look forward to this.

You may have lost some money and time on that outboard, but it looks like you've had a cracking time with your dad. That's priceless.
That is a kind and observant response! Good for you, man.
Hi Mark watching from Sydney Australia and have been watching for some years. Enjoy what you’re doing and really enjoy watching your dad work on engines. It’s great fun. Your mum and dad are terrific. All the best mate. Hang in there.
Good old dad, getting that engine sorted. Fingers crossed it’s fixed.
Your dad's a star, a real mechanical super sleuth. Pleased to hear the engine running again.
A practical Dad who's happy to help..saving you a fortune..can't believe the price of genuine parts up in the UK 🇬🇧..good video
Great having your dad in 'your corner' for everything mechanical. Interesting video
Congratulations! You not only fixed a very pesky electrical problem, you gained lots of knowledge about your engine. As the years go by you will learn to cherish the time spent working with your Dad.
Dad shop's episodes are the best, love the old chevy!
Knowledge and working with your dad is priceless! Don’t sweat the cost 😉

good to have you back Mark.....as always your Dad is a wizard mechanic
Yes Mark, this was indeed a PROPER video! Congrats to you and Steve on finding and fixing the faulty CDI unit. See you in the next one.
Your dad is always a good TH-cam generator
Nice that you guys fixed the problems ! Love when your parents are in the videos
Your Dad is kool af. He's got a pickup in the UK that I'm jealous of here in the USA. Much respect!
Congratulations on the revived and revised engine!
Nice to see you back looking forward to seeing more work on the cat and can't wait for your first maiden voyage .
Happy New Year Mark and to the rest of you family. All the best
I enjoy watching you and your dad fettle away at an engine. Different sort of content like you said but still a good watch Mark

Great use of time in England. What a font of knowledge your dad is.
Well done with the motor Dad. Good support from Mark

I love these video's working on stuff with your dad their great! I think i've said it before but he should have his own channel, :)
Outboards are usually the bane of a sailor's existence. You are in good and plentiful company.
Good Work Mark and Steve, happy new year to you all. 🍻
Totally digging your Dad's '65 C10! Glad you guys got the that "cranky" motor fixed too.

Being an engine illiterate person myself, I have really enjoyed this video 😊 thanks a lot to you and your dad!
Great to see you back fully recharged, glad you had a great family festive break just what the body ordered.
It is very satisfying to see you make that thing run smoother. 😀 👍
Awesome work Mark and especially Steve, glad to see the engine working again. Hi to Mary as well. Here's to a wonderful 2025. 🎉🎉🎉
That engine should be better than new now, well done, both! Capnjohn ⚓️👍🇬🇧😎
It's a great feeling when we resolve these kind of issues. Well done mate!
Great news sorting that painful engine 👍👍👍
Always good to see you working with your dad.
I just love how chilled your dad is!
Just a comment.
Love the car/truck collection in your dad's garage. Glad you are recharged and feeling better, looking forward to seeing more videos in the near future! Keep up the good work.
Love these types of videos! I almost wish you would run the old engines until they couldn’t go anymore. Wishing you a Happy New Year!
