    Thank you! No way I could have gotten the tent and fly set up properly without this excellent video. The instructions are vague and minimal, to say the least, and leave out key information, which you clearly provided. And thanks for the Tyvek tip.

    I've used mine a dozen times now and your video taught me a few things that will make it even better. This is a great video, very thorough and easy to watch. Thanks!

    Thanks for the great setup explanation. I hiked 1400 miles of the AT with the 2 person version and purchased the 1 person version to save 1lb. Will be completing my thru hike this spring then doing the Colorado Long trail in July/August This tent is the best value and design that I have seen on the trail.
    I use titanium tent pins and save some weight. I also use the footprint. A quick setup, footprint and rain fly, when a storm is roiling thru is a great way to stay dry and safe. I also use the footprint under my sleeping pad in shelters to keep everything clean.
    Most people don't realize how important the shelter is. A good night sleep set you up for a great hike the next day. Thanks for the great review.

    Thanks for the very detailed video. I'm thinking of getting this tent, now I can see up close how well it is designed.

    I own this tent second hand. I watched your video and enjoyed the near complete setup and review of the tent!

    Thank you Art. I would not have been able to figure out how to put this tent together without watching your video. You saved me hours of frustration, a possible rip in the tent, and another trip to REI to ask them to show me how to do it. Your voice is clear and your video is clear, even without your camera guy.

    Thank you for making and posting this video. I just bought this tent today, and you've shown me tips that I'd likely not figured out on my own.

    Great review. Much better than the video at the REI web site. You really show the whole tent inside and out. I appreciate the thorough review and detailed explanation.

    Art,
    Thank you very much for your excellent review. It was wonderfully comprehensive. You covered every conceivable detail for anyone considering a purchase of the Quarter Dome. I was very excited about this tent when I first came across it, but after watching your video review, I am thoroughly convinced I am going to buy it.
    Avid backpackers owe you a debt of gratitude for this review and the shorter version. Although I live close to an REI store, the Quarter dome isn't set up for display--REI seems to be pushing the Big Agnes tents in the same class. Your video is the next best thing to being able to climb into the real thing. (all you need now is a 3-D Imax camera :) )
    Your comment about needing an extra stake-out loop near the entrance should definitely be addressed by REI. In any event, even with my feeble sewing skill, I should be able to add a loop. Just the sort of detail that makes this such a great review.
    I'm looking forward to your impressions of the Quarter Dome after you use it on a trip.

    Hi Art! I just watched your video and it's been very helpful. I just bought my Quarter Dome 1 and the available footprint ($25) and am looking forward to using it this August on a 7 day backpack in the Glacier Peak Wilderness of Washington State. Cheers!

    Thank for showing this tent in all details that you showed us. Great view and see the details to see it clearly. In my opinion, this is the best UL tent that I have seen compared to other brands. What I have learned about the bottom tent floor where there is a little arch on bottom tub is to prevent the water go into the bottom tent seam. Zipper sags by the midway is not a big deal for me. I can live with that, and a lot of tents are like that in my opinion.
    The only thing that I will get for this tent is UL stakes for sure to reduce the weights for backpacking and thinner, reflective guy line like MSR Hubba.Hubba which I use for two people tent for backpacking. However, this REI Quarter Dome 1 is definitely what I am looking for solo backpacking. This is the best design that I have seen in years from REI team that finally put its thoughts into this tent right. What a great job that REI team has put into this tent! It's going to get better and better to compete with MSR and other brands. Just love it! Go REI !!!!

    Thanks! I just bought one of these, and the instructions that come with at are vague and worthless. This was very helpful as I set up the tent in my apartment building's corridor (for practice).

    Thanks for the comprehensive and informative review. REI let me set the tent up in the store yesterday and I'm buying it as soon as the 20 percent deal comes. I also want to call out the inconspicuous fly color, an advantage on occasion. I never thought of using tyvek underneath; I'll have to try that.

    I bought this tent and just got it today. Set it up immediately and couldn't figure out what that clip on the fly was for on the opposing wall from the door. Not sure I would have ever actually, so thanks for that. I am surprised you didn't address the ball and socket pole attachment a bit better, especially how the fly interfaced with it via that black round clip - I assume you just slide it over the whole thing, but I wasn't sure. I don't know why these tents don't explain some of this stuff better, we love TH-cam!

    Just posted a review of this tent on my channel also. It's a great tent except that the vestibule is WAY too small for an actual backpacking backpack. So I ended up returning mine.

    Excellent review. I chuckled during your movie when you mentioned the other reviews. I had seen them prior to watching yours and they were deficient in the areas you described. Glad someone showed me how to set it up. I figured I set it up right, but wasn't sure. Great video. It is much needed.
    I do have one question. There was a section of pipe that apparently fits over the frame pipe. It's orange and about six inches long. What is it for? Also I am a first time backpacker, so I wanted to know what kind of cord you do your tie outs with. I am also considering the REI ultralite stakes. They are $2.50 a pop and I wanted to know what you think of them.
    Thanks.

    • @artgavel6983
      @artgavel6983  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you John L. the orange piece is a "splint" should you break a tent pole. as far as cord goes, i just use a good quality cord from REI ( dont rememember the exact brand) that is light weight. I prefer the non reflective as its easier to work with. the stakes I use are the L stakes made from T6 6061 aluminum as they are not too expensive and in a upcoming video I will be showing you how two of them can be used as a splint instead of the 6 inch orange piece that comes with the tent. good luck and watch for lots of new videos and more after the first of the year!

    I like my quarter dome 1, the only downside is in humid conditions, the tent gets very hot inside with the rain cover on, so it would be hard to sleep in those conditions, other than that its great.

    • @artgavel6983
      @artgavel6983  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      when you stake out the rainfly, try pulling the bottom edges of the rain fly out and away as much as possible from the tent. this will allow more air flow. also, if ants, mosquitos, rattlesnakes etc are not a problem, you can also keep the inner door open or keep the outer fly door open. other than that, there isn't much else. I can say I spent many a night in a single wall tent and it was many times worse when it came to air circulation.

    nice video. very informative.
    one bit of constructive criticism: try to zoom your camera out if possible. your shots were too tight. if you shot it with a fixed focus camera, then disregard, I guess.

    Say "Incidentally" one more time!! seriously, great review. It wasn't clear to me if the drip line of the rain cover drops on the ground or the edge of the tent? dripping on the ground is critical if you don't want water between your tent and your (tyvek) ground cloth. thanks for the review!

    • @artgavel6983
      @artgavel6983  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      nope! it drips on the ground. but, remember that when you cut tour tyvek that it should not stick out beyond the outer most edges of the tents foot print. so setting up the tent at home and then VERY carefully marking and then cutting your tyvek. remember that you don't really get any "do overs" when making your foot print.

    Have you tried making the vestibule into a "porch-like awning" for shade in desert using your trekking poles and 2 stakes and paracord?

    • @artgavel6983
      @artgavel6983  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Kenton Velomancer Hi Kenton! I have not tried that. have you actually done this? I would love to see how you did it. maybe you could post a video or look me up on facebook and give me the basics and I could do a video, either way I am interested!

    nice tent setup!
    good enough for two people.....c'mon now!.........maybe for two midgets....
    here's hint for getting the tent more taut. take marbles and tie it inside with shock or paracord to stretch the section.
    in your case, you can tie the marble so that the zipper will be easier to manage... around 20:40 time mark

    Hello, great review. I un boxed this tent and am having a little trouble with the clips that attach the tent body and fly above the door and the pole. Any further info? I don't want to force anything.

    • @artgavel6983
      @artgavel6983  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Eric! thanks for checking out my vid. the clips will fit kinda tight. work your way around the tent starting from the bottom and work your way up. make sure that the base is squared up and not sitting crooked (even though its seems like its built that way a little) and you should have no problem

    • @ER-qm1ij
      @ER-qm1ij 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      So does the tent pole not go in the pocket on the rain fly above the black clip? I can get fly and tent clips to join and the tent pole inside them, maybe that's correct and what looks like a pocket for the pole on the fly and attached to the black clip is not used? Thanks for your help.

    • @bretb8799
      @bretb8799 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nope can't slide the pole into the pocket since the pole end clips into the plastic piece on the tent. Just pull the black plastic clip on the fly over the end of the pole and it interlocks with the clear plastic clip on the tent.

    • @artgavel6983

      practice, practice practice. its not to bad. one thing for sure, if its raining you will definitely get it set up quicker! the more you use it the faster the set up goes. if you purchase one, make sure to do a few set ups at home before going out on the trail. I have seen a number of people who purchase product and then get into the backwoods and haven't even taken the product out of the retail packaging....always funny!
