    Try placing it on a rock to heat instead hanging in the air. The rocks get heated and warm the water. When you hang it is expised to the breeze that cools the water.

    Just ordered my second pair of these from Oboz. My first pair is now almost 5 years old. Still have the original laces, the only thing that finally started to give was a little bit of the stitching started to come apart and water would get in. Plus the bottoms wore flat. These are awesome shoes and definitely pay for themselves. They fit like a glove. Extremely comfortable and excellent support. One complaint I do have is that if you're walking on slick surfaces, tred slowly! I found myself laying on my back a couple times from my feet slipping out from underneath me.

    I love the fit of my waterproof Oboz until I went hiking. The heel padding is very light and it has a very heavy stich that gave me a killer blister...hopeful I will be able to break them in. They are extremely stiff. Other complaint is they have great traction in mud and sand but once you hit rock or hill with heavy root. They get really slippery, almost dangerous.

    I owned the REI Chrysalis and after trying to figure out how to set it up, I donated it to Goodwill. This one is a tad better to set up but orienting the poles was a PIA. No more REI tents for me. Try setting this tent up in the field near darkness or with an incoming storm as you try to orient the poles. I'm glad REI discontinued this tent with another cockamamie set up.

    Do you order a size larger in your hiking shoes? I bought this in a 12 (my size) but I feel my toe is a bit too close to front. So I'm gonna re-order in 13. Too bad they don't offer a half size, 12.5.

    • @artgavel6983
      @artgavel6983 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Captain Sunday! yah, it seems every shoe maker has a different idea of what a shoe size is. if they feel tight at all i would definitely move up one size as your feet will swell as the day goes on. also consider width. if your baby toe or outside ball of your foot feels tight, you may need a wide, particularly if your past 40 or so as our feet tend to flatten out as we get older. buying the perfect hiking boot or shoe that fits perfect is a process that can take some time. just remember that the more money you spend on name brand shoes doesn't always correlate to a better fitting shoe. its all about the "last" the shoe was built on. if that last is similar in shape to your foot, then it will tend to be more comfortable. take your time and good luck! happy hiking!!!

    I just watched this again, and what he says at around 7:35 is very enlightening. He says the waterproof version fits different than the non-waterproof version. I have the waterproof, and it's been hurting the top of my instep near the knot of the laces. Like he says, I wonder if it's because the laces go higher up on the these waterproof versions. Anyway, I just ordered the non-waterproof version, and I'm really hoping the instep pain isn't a factor with those. Because I LOVE these Firebrands. A lighter but very supportive hiking shoe, with nice forward propulsion. I'll make a comment when I get the non-waterproofs delivered in a few weeks. Thanks for everything Art. Please review more shit.

    Got these recently. The front edge of tongues jam into my ankles with every step I take. It's not subtle either. I don't think it's the hardness of the tongues. Visually, it looks like the upper (laces and tongue) are quite long. Extend quite far toward ankle. I'll have to watch your review again to see if you had same issue.

  • @Frip36
    @Frip36 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Instep discussion was so important. I'd thought about it vaguely, but never REALLY thought about it. Maybe that's why these Firebrands feel so good on me. I hate when shoes bear down on my tendons in top-foot. Sorry, "instep". Dude reminds me of Steve-O.

      thank you so much for the comments. haven't really been promoting my channel lately as I have been busy with other projects. so as it turned out some time back, the boots were a problem. they were very well made, but the flex point for the sole of the boot ended up being to far back, not quite mid foot when it should be closer to the toe joint. it took me some time to figure that out. I have been wearing Merrel Moabs and they are very comfy, but not as heavy duty as I would like. as far as the hat goes, it is a Tilly Hat. I have 2 different versions. if your not familiar with them, check them out. guaranteed for life and they are the best.

    Great review. Surprised that it leak water. You can cool a beer wrapping it in a wet newspaper and put it in the sun. The evaporation sucks heat out of the beer. So that is not going to help getting the water heated any altitude.

      they are pretty warm on hot days. sadly enough, in the long run they don't seem to jive with my foot. the best I can figure is they tend to flex farther back on my foot just beyond the ball of my foot as apposed to more near where my toes flex causing a blister if I am not careful. I have never encountered that before. they will have to work until we get past this whole covid19 thing and I can get into a few different retailers for a fit

      Thank you so much for the compliment Brett! Yes, a lot of my knowledge was learned in the trenches for sure. A funny tidbit here is after wearing the firebrand for a few seasons I have discovered I cant seem to avoid blisters on each of my big toes. I have tried a lot of different variables with socks and inserts with no luck. so here is my best guess scenario....the Oboz Firebrand shoe seems to bend farther back on my foot as apposed to closer to the toes as they should. I figured it was a "break in thing" but no. I just finished a 40 miler out of Hetch Hetchy and was wearing the Oboz Sawtooth low and its a little more flexible. it seemed to flex easier and more at the toe box instead of farther back towards my instep and had no problems with blisters. go figure! oh well! thanks again and happy trails!

    Oboz Firebrand II BDry Hiking Shoe - Men's Earth. What did you think of these shoes after having/using them? I looked but didn't see any follow up videos as to how they were. I've seen a lot of other comments about these being terrible in wet conditions, wet hill sides, creeks etc.... one guy likened them to being on roller skates on wet surfaces, and another said "On wet... it's like you're taking your life in your hands". With the great in depth review you did when you purchased them... just wondering (before dropping $140 on a pair), what your experience was with them, on wet surfaces? TIA.

    • @artgavel6983
      @artgavel6983 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      they have held up well, however I am not sure I would buy them again. as far as being waterproof, the outer skin is not a full on leather wrap, also they are a low top so being waterproof wasn't on my list. as far as slipping on wet rock.....its super hard rubber sole so yah they will slip more than some, but the soles have lasting power. if you spend a lot of time in wet conditions you may be better off with a more conventional mid cut boot. generally one with softer sole rubber will slip less on wet rock but will also wear out faster. good luck to you! try on lots of shoes and wear them at home on the carpet for a bit and see how you like them after a few hours. (it makes returning them less problematic)

    Aren't these Sea to Summit pocket showers more like a breathable rain jacket, a woven syn cloth with a breathable membrane laminated on the inside ? If so, it is seepage through the bladder much like GoreTex would eventually do when continuously soaked. Like you say, it's no big deal.

    Great review/content! I went to REI and checked this particular model of Oboz out. Best fit and insole I've ever tried - The Most Comfortble...to me, period! I checked the label behind the tongue and these are made in Vietnam. While I. REI I checked the Keen Durand model ("asembled in USA"), too because I have wide feet - they felt "okay" but the insoles and lacing system were not as spot on as these Oboz Firebrand 2. I've tried several other brands too - Asolo, Hanwag, Lowa, Salomon, Zamberlan, etc. But the Oboz wins for me hands down.

    • @artgavel6983
      @artgavel6983 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      awesome! yah, I later discovered that although the Oboz company is located in the US, there product is made overseas. there are some US footwear companies who advertise made in the US and after closer inspection it turns out that only a few of there products are made in the US while the other 90% of there product is made overseas. the US made portion was an easy $100-150 more than the overseas product. I wonder if it was $100-150 better quality.

      The European made brands are okay, too but more expensive and still not as nice of a ride on my feet as the Oboz Firebrand 2 I tried. The soles of my feet, my (high) arch, my toes (I was able to wiggle) were quite happy in the firebrand. I was really impressed because I usually spend an additional $50.00 on insoles like superfeet, etc. Wish I had learned about this brand sooner!
