      I have a feeling I needed to be right in Frankfort to get the slag. I met a woman on the beach who told me that there were not good rocks in Frankfort and that everyone comes to the lighthouse to rock hunt. Afterwards, I talked to someone else from the area who told me that I got some bad information.

      @@MichiganRocks speaking of colors we wanted (wife & I) wanted to explain something we said in recent pass concerning pink pudding stone..., So you I believe corrected me from a rock or puddingstone we thought you were seeking that was pink, however you said it was a petoskey pink stone you were seeking. Anyways have you seen pink puddingstones, or is there supposed to be pink puddingstones.? The reason we ask is after your comment about what we thought was for pink puddingstones..., We found one that certainly is a salmon pink.., it doesn't have many red jasper pieces their smaller but the rings of stones around the rock are varied in colors but the main stone is like we said pink. It is approximately the size of a softball.. question is ..are there pink puddingstones..? Thanks and lastly we believe the stone we found at an oil field gravel pit is going to be gorgeous once it's polished well.., problem for us is we don't have a way to polish it ourselves right now. If you would be up for it we would love to pay you to polish it and return it. We would pay for everything of course. Consider it please.., and in closing we just wanted you to know we were not weirdos lol and that we actually found a (2 now) pink puddingstone.

      I have found pinkish puddingstones, I think. My neighbor Sam, who has been in some of my videos found a red conglomerate rock recently that's in the tumbler now. It's also about softball sized. It's not a puddingstone, but is a conglomerate as a puddingstone is.
      I don't tumble many rocks for other people. I do some occasionally, but it's really difficult to keep someone else's rocks separate from my rocks. My next door neighbor just brought me one that I threw in today. I took several pictures of it first and I'm still worried that I'll lose it. I wish there was a better way to keep track of rocks, but since each rock spends as much time as is necessary, instead of all the rocks in a batch getting done at the same time, it's hard to do.
      I never thought you two were weirdos, so don't worry about that.

    Ha Ha, I told you we had agates in Lake Michigan. Nice find. We drove up to Michigan Wednesday. I wish I knew you were coming over to my neighborhood we could have gotten together for lunch or something. I’m at a little town called Wellston about 20 east of Manistee on M-55. Nice drone shots. What were the things in the water radiating out from the break wall. Did you notice any distinct difference between the Lake Michigan beach rocks and the Lake Huron beach rocks ? And just wondering, did the shards of glass do any damage to your tumbler barrels?

      @MichiganRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure what the purpose of that whole structure below the lighthouse was. There were also concrete blocks sticking out of the concrete. I'm not sure what the purpose of those were either.
      There's not a big difference between Lake Michigan rocks and Lake Huron rocks as far as I can see.
      The glass didn't do any damage to my barrel as far as I could tell.

      Unless you live on the water or visit the same beach often, I think it's hard to understand just how much the beach changes from year to year or even after a good storm. I have gone to beaches that are sandy one time, and the next time I go, they're covered in rocks. Last year, the water was really high and while some people were losing their lawns along a beach I go to, there was one spot where the beach had gotten about fifty feet wider. Water is a powerful force that moves a lot of rock and sand around. With sand, wind is also a huge factor.

      I have a few spots that you can probably find one. I have found them at Rockport and there's a big one under water just north of the pier. I don't find lots of them there, and you have to go quite a ways to the North to have much luck. Here are some other spots:
      Harrisville State Park - This is a campground, so the beach will be well picked over. The rocks here tend to be smaller although there are some bigger ones too. Great Lakes beaches are state land. That means you can walk as far as you want, even if someone puts up a sign telling you that you're leaving the park or that it's private property. It's ok to walk right in front of someone's house since they don't own the beach. State land goes up to the high water mark. If in doubt, keep your feet wet and you won't be trespassing. I have never been yelled at by a homeowner. th-cam.com/video/5g0tzGhrKaI/w-d-xo.html
      Sturgeon Point Lighthouse - This is close to Harrisville and the rocks are pretty similar. If I remember correctly, the rocks were a bit larger here than at Harrisville. th-cam.com/video/roKD6QxpaW4/w-d-xo.html
      Negwegon State Park - To the south is nothing but sand. Beautiful, but who wants sand? There’s sand to the north for quite a ways too. Take the path to the north from the parking lot. Walk 1.1 miles to the first camping spot, called Blue Bell. Walk to the water there and hunt to the north. This is a good spot for puddingstones.
      Singing Bridge Public Access near Augres - You should watch my video before going here. With the water being high, I had to wade around some break walls in knee deep water. I wouldn't want to do that in rough water. I found several nice puddingstones and a few Petoskey stones too. th-cam.com/video/JF469dElD3E/w-d-xo.html

      I was not expecting to find that agate. Would you call that one a cold water agate? There seems to be some debate here as to whether it was a cold water or Lake Superior agate that got carried farther than most by a glacier. Do you find them with such good banding as that one I found?

    The cold water agates I have found usually don’t have the swirled bands like your second one also not as translucent. I think that’s a Superior agate in Lake Michigan? Just a thought

      It's possible. I have heard that Lakers can be found occasionally in Lake Michigan. Either way, I'm thrilled with that find. It's a rare one either way.

    The favosite that you found was silicified. That just means then that quartz replaced the limestone. It got me thinking then, shouldn't that stand to reason if you find a big enough piece that you could make your crosses with it? It is quartz then and no longer limestone. Can you imagine how beautiful those would be?! You should look for another larger piece and give it a try!

    • @MichiganRocks
      @MichiganRocks  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't have much experience with silicified fossils from Lake Michigan, but I have picked up Petoskey Stones like this from Lake Huron. I have tumbled them and slabbed one. They almost always have a bunch of little voids in them. The one I slabbed has a couple decent spots that I would like to make a pendant from some day. I almost never take them home because they're usually disappointing to tumble. If they weren't so full of holes, they'd be great though. I should try one from Lake Michigan to see if they're like the ones I'm used to.

    We've been here when the beach was huge....played a game of whiffle ball. The metal breakers used to be clear up in the sand.
    Hope the water level goes down.

    Towards Leland you can for sure find superior agates, though they're few and far between. I've found several but they're pretty small. Glacial movement stirred them around abit.

      @@MichiganRocks Some more fun info on lower peninsula agates; at the corner of my street is a sand & gravel place that my family is VERY close to. They let me look through their stone piles every time they get a new load in and I sometimes find agates there. For context, I live in the tri-city area and this sand & gravel place sources from West Branch, so superior agates have come a lot further than you'd think!

    When I was young my big sister would get a big plastic tub and cut the bottom off and cover in clear plastic like cling film and I could put in the water and I could see the rocks in the water clearer, have you ever tried that so the tide doesn’t stop you seeing stuff :) love your channel!

    • @MichiganRocks

      That's funny that you said that. I have had that same comment a couple times lately. I put a plexiglas bottom in a bucket quite a few years ago for that purpose. I have never even tested it out. It's still in my basement. Here's why I haven't used it: If it's really rough, the waves are just going to knock the bucket around. If it's calm, I don't need it. The best time to use it would be if there's a ripple on the water, but that usually only happens for a short time between calm water and a wind that causes rough water. But maybe the biggest problem is that I don't have enough hands to carry everything. Even if I didn't have a camera, I would have a bucket to carry rocks and a scooper. I like to cover a lot of ground, so it would really slow me down to have to put my rock bucket down on the beach to use my viewing bucket, and then have to constantly be going back to get the rock bucket. Since there seems to be an interest in this contraption, I might have to take mine out and make a quick video about it, explaining how it works and why I don't use it.
