Hey Rob... sorry about doubling up on the comments! At 15:15 the rock you show reminds me of Dallasite, which by all accounts and reshearch only is found in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. So of course my wife and I and another couple made a 5-day trip to BC, rented a VRBO that had a secluded beach and by cracky we found Dallasite Rocks. As I type there is a good size one tumbling in 60/90, Cheers!
I have seen Dallasite only on the Internet, but it's a pretty rock. The rock in this video has some really soft spots, which I don't think Dallasite has. There was a guy on the Rock Tumbling Hobby forums a few years back who lived in British Columbia who was really into working with it.
Oh man I am so envious! I live in Ohio and years ago my wife, kids and I took a trip to the UP and fell in love with the Crisp Point Lighthouse. My kids were young and loved the long trip through the woods to get there. That is a very beautiful area. Love the video and the finds. We still have a collection of rocks here from that very spot.
From Ohio? If your crowd likes fossils at all, Ohio is full of them. Cincinnati especially is fantastic. No digging required. I look in places where there's running water: check out the slope behind the dumpster of your motel!

Those round rocks were actually a little less stable than most beach rocks are. It might have been because they were also all about the same size. They just moved around a little more.
I was at Whitefish Point last week and we took our shoes and socks off to walk in the water and it’s not comfortable on bare feet. It’s nice to sit on though and much cleaner than a sand beach.
That was a gorgeous backdrop of you guys with the lighthouse in the opening of the video. Yes, I can see how the black sand could be mesmerizing in the waves. Boy Rob, that Sam keeps getting the jump on you finding all the agates. Maybe it has to do with him sneakily walking ahead of you down the beach 😂. Nice video, as always, thanks for sharing.
@15:20, I've found exactly 1 that is just like that one. Mine is bigger, but it and all of my agates and best fossils were accidently left in the flower beds at our last home. Its definitely a rare combination. Congratulations.
We were at Crisp Point in September and the beach was FULL of logs/trees. We got a t shirt that says "I survived the road to Crisp Point". It was quite a drive on that "road".
@@MichiganRocks the road is great right now, and the rock picking sucks! you gotta go late fall or early spring when you NEED a chainsaw and expect to have to drive through a foot and a half of water in places. i parked at the top of the hill where you hid the rocks last December because there was a 5 foot snow drift there. Silverado with snow tires, last week it only took me 30 minutes to do the trail but i've had trips where it takes 1.5 hours. the only worse road i've driven in Michigan is the road to High Rock Bay. sometimes Wildcat road is VERY challenging as well due to VERY high water.
@@rcryderman11 That makes complete sense if you're going in the winter or early spring. I have seen big puddles on that corner too, but the bottom is always solid, so it's not a big deal to drive through it.

Very nice finds Michigan Rocks, and as always Sam has the gift of youth, good eyesight and speed on his side, have you considered a leg weight? I think about 20 lbs. should do the trick! LOL.
I love your channel. I drool at every rock you pick up, and many that you don’t. I paint rocks and I use flat round ones. I am amazed at how many flat round rocks there are on those beaches. I wish I lived near the lakes,I would collect those more then the agates. Ha. Thanks for your videos. They are great!
Was JUST there. Spent 4 days being a volunteer keeper. Brought home some COOL rocks including a couple Yooper lights, aggies and my favorite greenstones.
@@debidevaney8398 Near the Soo? I've been thinking about making a trip to that area, but I don't know if there are any good rocks there. I did some research recently and found that there are a lot of provincial parks in that area and that it's illegal to pick up rocks in provincial parks.
@MichiganRocks Further west actually, Thunder Bay. There are a couple of good amethyst mines just east of town on Hwy 11/17. I haven't been out that way in a couple of decades, tho, so I'm not sure what the rules there are anymore.
Crisp Point Lighthouse is memorable as is where our family and friends stopped and signed the register on January 1, 2000. We figured if all the computers stopped working and time clocks went haywire, we may as well spend the day snowmobiling away from all the technology failures everyone predicted.

I have one of those green & white rocks too! When I saw your intro with that rock I was really excited thinking I was going to finally find out what it is. But I’m guessing you don’t know what it is either. 🤷🏻♀️
It's three and a half for me. Earlier this week my wife and I drove from the Detroit area to the Soo. We spent the night in the Soo, drove west two hours and hunted rocks the next day and then drove 3.5 hour home. That's a lot of driving for a few hours on the beach, but think it's worth it.
I have done that in the past when visiting. The problem with shells is that I never know what to do with them when I get them home. I don't think they can be polished like rocks can. It is fun to look for them though.
Boy, Sam found quite a few great agates this time! And you are getting to be quite the pro at picking out the Yooperlites. At 5:03 that rock with the cracks revealing red underneath make me think of a Christmas cookie a friend of mine makes which are a chocolate base which you roll in powdered sugar, and when it bakes it produces cracks like that. 13:25ish, looks like a tropical drink. Is it a tequila sunrise? 😉 Is the black sand the same which indicates gold? P.S. Sorry I haven’t commented prior to this, but apologies to you and Nancy for the somewhat abrupt greeting at the grocery store a few days prior to the 4th of July weekend! It was way too crowded to really visit at all, but maybe some other time.
Yes, the black sand usually has at least some gold in it. Meijer was awful that day. All I wanted to do was get out of there. No need to apologize for not keeping me there longer!
I watch every youtube that you post. Like many others, you walk thru piles and I see a stripie or red jasper that I want to snatch up ! Love your humor and videos 👍🏻

Way before your grandson was even thought about being born!!!! 🤣 And... I love every video I watch!!! I wish I had someone like you have Sam, that loves rocks just as much as you do!! Although, I talk about my rock findings to any of my friends and they do listen and some even want to see what I'm crazy about!! Funny part, I have many people who happen to see what they think is a beautiful rock and bring it home to me, from vacations to where they live!! @@MichiganRocks Rob, we are having one of the hottest temps ever! 13 is avg of 90’s for Summer. We are at 18 so far along with 3 days this week in already forecasted in the 90’s. The humidity is what sucks!! Being in the 80’s w/humidity isn’t any better!!! But, we are in the 70’s today w/low humidity!!!! Perfect!!! Joe is in the best years right now, and yes every age is wonderful!! But you don’t have to work hard to be a neat grandparent right now, they love you soooo much unconditionally!! I believe the more attention they get from you thru their life, that love will never die!! All four boys always tell me they love me without having to be told to say it as you leave them!! It is a real high buzz with the two older boys 14 and 19 Yrs old and they say that to you loud and clear in front of their friends as they hug you goodbye!!!! Grandchildren are the best thing ever!! Stay Cool !!! 👍

Love the "Stone Stash" idea! Would enjoy taking you up on the stone stash... however google maps tells me it is 2,141 miles from our home to Crisp Lighthouse! Oh, hang on I'll be right there!
I'm having fun with the Stone Stash too. I know that only one person can win, but it's fun to see that. Hopefully everyone is having fun with it as much as I am. That green rock from the thumbnail was very, very popular when I found one a few years ago. That should make someone very happy if they find it.
People say things like that all the time, but I have never found the road to be all that rough. It wasn't rough at all when Sam and I were there. I must just be lucky to pick days when the road has been recently graded.
That's the nice part about being there yourself. You get to pick up or take whichever ones you like the most. The others get left behind to be someone else's favorite finds of the day.
I gotta say, when it’s 110*…….that misty weather looks heavenly. My fav. was the next one after triangle rock. I know you tossed it, but it was so interesting.
We just found you channel and have been really enjoying the content. We just put our first batch of rock tumbling yesterday. We live about an hour from Crisp Point and went for a ride up there today. Someone must have got the rocks you left there already because there was no sign of them. Looking forward to catching up on your content!
Yeah, I was disappointed that no one sent in pictures of finding those. That green and white rock I left was by far the most desirable rock I have ever hidden in a Stone Stash. Hopefully whoever found it really enjoyed it.
You can find unakite just about anywhere between Grand Marais and Whitefish Point. Really big ones are kind of hard to find. They're not usually much bigger than a softball.

I get something similar to Sam's cut rock from time to time down here on the San Jacinto river. The big difference is that it is usually inside a red jaspagate. No clue what they are but they look wild after tumbling.
I was at the Sunoco in Rogers City and I noticed that, back by the Oil Company in the back, there is a pretty amazing Pudding Stone split in half in the stone wall
There are puddingstones in a lot of stone walls around here. There's one I notice in the stone pillars on either side of the cemetery driveway here in Alpena.
Got back from my trip to OH and MI (Lakeport/Port Huron). Did find a Petoskey stone, terrible pudding stone and very small piece of unakite (donated by a friend) and some other cool stuff which I haven't decided yet how to display. Also saw a lighthouse - Fort Gratiot - which is the oldest in the state. Overall great trip and quite a change from New Port Richey FL!😊

Yes, I know they were very worried about the lighthouse a few years ago. I'm not sure if they added more rocks around it since then. The water is high this year, so I think it's probably still in some danger. I'm not sure if agates are harder to find on cloudy days. They're much easier to spot on sunny days when the sun is low in the sky and you walk toward the sun. But I don't know that it makes that much difference if the sun is high in the sky versus a cloudy day. We didn't have much sun while we were there this year and still managed to find some great agates.
I was rock hunting around Sleeping Bear Dunes (Port Oneida Beach) last week and found a fossil almost EXACTLY like the one at 1:40. I almost thought about sending a photo of it to you to see if you knew what it was. My only guess is that it's sort of a cross section view of a piece of fossilized coral. Had it not been within park boundaries, I probably would have taken it home.
I didn't look really closely at that one, but I didn't really think it was a fossil. Now I wish I had looked closer. I have never found another one like that that I can remember.
Nope, I think that would make it more like work. My method is to look at as many rocks as quickly as possible. Other people are diggers, thinking it's better to look at rocks that no one else can see on the top. I enjoy the walk. I don't enjoy raking.

Ugh, we head home in less than 2 weeks, going back to whitefish point for sure, and i wanted to hit crisp point but dunno if my minivan would make it back there lol
I can't advise you on the minivan on that road. Any time I have been on the road to Crisp Point, I'd say a minivan would be fine, but I get more comments on how bad that road is than I do about any other road.
I took the Jeep as usual, but the road was pretty good. I have never been on that road when a two wheel drive vehicle would have been a problem. Sometimes there will be large puddles, but the bottom has always been solid. That being said, I get more comments about how bad the road is on Crisp Point videos that any other videos. I don't understand what the problem is. Sure it gets wash boardy at times, but to me, that's pretty normal for dirt roads. Someone commented on this video that they have a shirt that says something like "I survived the road to Crisp Point Lighthouse". There must be something to all those comments, but to me, it's not a bad road at all.
That one at 6:43 was probably actually quartzite, which is the mineral quartz, but is also metamorphosed sandstone. If it was quartzite, you'd be able to see graininess in it. Agate is microcrystalline quartz, so you can't see grains or individual quartz crystals. The stripes on that were nice, but not nearly as crisp as they'd be on an agate.
That might change from year to year. I'm not sure about this beach, but there are Great Lakes beaches that can go from rocky to sandy or vice versa after a big storm. In my experience here though, west is usually better.
Yes, I know that people call them that, but I don't like the name so I don't use it. I really dislike all the magical healing rock stuff and "hag stone" sounds a little too close to that for me.
@MichiganRocks lol me either. I just remember my mom telling me they (the stone finds you) and if ever given away it means you're loved. She gave me her collection of them just before she passed. 🥰
Later that day, Sam and I went on a Yooperlite hunt. That video will be out soon. The word "Yooper" mean someone who is from the U.P. If you say "U.P." it sounds like Yoo Pee. So someone from the Yoo Pee is a Yooper.
* Isn't it hard to find agates on misty & cloudy days? Seems like the lack of sun would make hunting harder.. At the 12:32 mark there are a lot of stripy rocks.
Personality! That is what Michigan rocks have - - PERSONALITY! actually, most rocks seem to have personality ... but there are standouts. 8:20... how fun!
Wife found a rock like them two larger Yooperlite's you have. It has what looks to be black quartz. What kind of blacklight do you suggest? We will be in the Soo in Oct
I have a Convoy S2 that I like, but there are bigger ones out there. I went hunting them with a guy who has about a dozen lights earlier this summer and he recommends the Alonefire SV74 365nm.

I don't leave rocks behind just because they won't tumble. Lots of rocks I leave behind would probably tumble very well. I just try to not have too many rocks piling up at home.
That's what everyone keeps telling me. I have never been on that road when it has been very bad. It was really good when Sam and I were there. Are you not used to driving on dirt roads or does that road get very bad between gradings?
@@MichiganRocks We drove a minivan when we went. It was some years back. I was so afraid we were going to get stuck. Plus, the drive seemed to never end. Once we finally arrived we stayed a very long time because I was nervous about the drive back. Lol It was beautiful though!
@@helgavoorneveld1530 Ok that's better. There are a LOT of rocks on screen at that time. If it's yellow, my guess is that it's iron stained quartz or quartzite. That color doesn't usually go all the way through the rock.
This was filmed in mid June. Daytime temperatures were between the mid forties and low fifties for the four days we were there. Other years, it has been hot. I was just to this area a couple days ago and it was probably in the upper seventies or eighty. If I ever go camping in the U.P. I always bring jeans and a sweatshirt, no matter what time of year it is.

@@karlsjunior466 I leave my Yooperlites behind. They’re fun to funding, but I don’t know what to do with them when I get them home. It doesn’t even make se to give them away unless you include a nice light with the gift. I found one in the daylight again last weekend and left it in a Stone Stash.
Earlier in the season is the best to find rocks, but it's also cold and hard to predict exactly how early to come. If you get there too early, there might still be piles of ice on the beach. I have gone in mid June a lot. At that time, the water is still so cold that your feet will be very cold if you're going in without waders. You never get used to the temperature. I just got back yesterday from a three day trip. The water was very pleasant to wade in and Sam and I found quite a few agates. Actually Sam found quite a few and I found a couple. The weather was great and the beach walk was much more pleasant than earlier in the year. When visiting the U.P., always bring a sweatshirt. We wore ours every morning and one evening in our three days in early August. The bugs were not bad at all, but they can be horrible. In the woods, it's mosquitos, but not the beach it's stable flies. I'd suggest buying a mesh bug suit for those, unless you like wearing long pants with your socks pulled up over them. They mostly attack your legs. If you look in the description of this video, I have an Amazon storefront with the bug suit I have listed there.

If we're walking side by side, he has no problem diving down in front of me to make sure he gets them before I do. I don't stand a chance.
The one at 14:00 is a skip-an-atom agate, which is mainly quartz that acts all agatey. Nice find!

The black ones tend to be flat and round. I think most of those are either graywacke or basalt.

It's three and a half for me. Earlier this week my wife and I drove from the Detroit area to the Soo. We spent the night in the Soo, drove west two hours and hunted rocks the next day and then drove 3.5 hour home. That's a lot of driving for a few hours on the beach, but think it's worth it.

I have done that in the past when visiting. The problem with shells is that I never know what to do with them when I get them home. I don't think they can be polished like rocks can. It is fun to look for them though.

At 5:03 that rock with the cracks revealing red underneath make me think of a Christmas cookie a friend of mine makes which are a chocolate base which you roll in powdered sugar, and when it bakes it produces cracks like that.

@@MichiganRocks Rob, we are having one of the hottest temps ever! 13 is avg of 90’s for Summer. We are at 18 so far along with 3 days this week in already forecasted in the 90’s. The humidity is what sucks!! Being in the 80’s w/humidity isn’t any better!!! But, we are in the 70’s today w/low humidity!!!! Perfect!!!
Joe is in the best years right now, and yes every age is wonderful!! But you don’t have to work hard to be a neat grandparent right now, they love you soooo much unconditionally!! I believe the more attention they get from you thru their life, that love will never die!! All four boys always tell me they love me without having to be told to say it as you leave them!! It is a real high buzz with the two older boys 14 and 19 Yrs old and they say that to you loud and clear in front of their friends as they hug you goodbye!!!! Grandchildren are the best thing ever!!

This was in mid June. I was up there late last week though and the weather was really nice, probably in the mid seventies.
Love the "Stone Stash" idea! Would enjoy taking you up on the stone stash... however google maps tells me it is 2,141 miles from our home to Crisp Lighthouse! Oh, hang on I'll be right there!
I'm having fun with the Stone Stash too. I know that only one person can win, but it's fun to see that. Hopefully everyone is having fun with it as much as I am. That green rock from the thumbnail was very, very popular when I found one a few years ago. That should make someone very happy if they find it.
Crisp point is amazing!!!! Not a fun drive unless you have 4x4! Found my first agate there!!
People say things like that all the time, but I have never found the road to be all that rough. It wasn't rough at all when Sam and I were there. I must just be lucky to pick days when the road has been recently graded.

That's the nice part about being there yourself. You get to pick up or take whichever ones you like the most. The others get left behind to be someone else's favorite finds of the day.

We just found you channel and have been really enjoying the content. We just put our first batch of rock tumbling yesterday. We live about an hour from Crisp Point and went for a ride up there today. Someone must have got the rocks you left there already because there was no sign of them. Looking forward to catching up on your content!
Yeah, I was disappointed that no one sent in pictures of finding those. That green and white rock I left was by far the most desirable rock I have ever hidden in a Stone Stash. Hopefully whoever found it really enjoyed it.

You can find unakite just about anywhere between Grand Marais and Whitefish Point. Really big ones are kind of hard to find. They're not usually much bigger than a softball.

I get something similar to Sam's cut rock from time to time down here on the San Jacinto river. The big difference is that it is usually inside a red jaspagate. No clue what they are but they look wild after tumbling.
I'm not sure what he did with that rock. I don't remember him tumbling any slabs.
I was at the Sunoco in Rogers City and I noticed that, back by the Oil Company in the back, there is a pretty amazing Pudding Stone split in half in the stone wall
There are puddingstones in a lot of stone walls around here. There's one I notice in the stone pillars on either side of the cemetery driveway here in Alpena.
Got back from my trip to OH and MI (Lakeport/Port Huron). Did find a Petoskey stone, terrible pudding stone and very small piece of unakite (donated by a friend) and some other cool stuff which I haven't decided yet how to display. Also saw a lighthouse - Fort Gratiot - which is the oldest in the state. Overall great trip and quite a change from New Port Richey FL!😊

Yes, I know they were very worried about the lighthouse a few years ago. I'm not sure if they added more rocks around it since then. The water is high this year, so I think it's probably still in some danger.
I'm not sure if agates are harder to find on cloudy days. They're much easier to spot on sunny days when the sun is low in the sky and you walk toward the sun. But I don't know that it makes that much difference if the sun is high in the sky versus a cloudy day. We didn't have much sun while we were there this year and still managed to find some great agates.
It was a crazy drive to the Crisp Point Life-Saving Station No. 10 in a Chevy Equinox but I want to go back.
Lots of people say that. I must have always hit it on a good day. The road can be really wash boardy, but other wise it has always been solid.
black agate is what we call that on the west coast. It is kind of rare and highly sought after.

I was rock hunting around Sleeping Bear Dunes (Port Oneida Beach) last week and found a fossil almost EXACTLY like the one at 1:40. I almost thought about sending a photo of it to you to see if you knew what it was. My only guess is that it's sort of a cross section view of a piece of fossilized coral. Had it not been within park boundaries, I probably would have taken it home.
I didn't look really closely at that one, but I didn't really think it was a fossil. Now I wish I had looked closer. I have never found another one like that that I can remember.

Nope, I think that would make it more like work. My method is to look at as many rocks as quickly as possible. Other people are diggers, thinking it's better to look at rocks that no one else can see on the top. I enjoy the walk. I don't enjoy raking.

I can't advise you on the minivan on that road. Any time I have been on the road to Crisp Point, I'd say a minivan would be fine, but I get more comments on how bad that road is than I do about any other road.
Really liked the ones at 5:20, 6:44, and 7:66. Do you need 4 wheel drive to get to Crisp point ?
I took the Jeep as usual, but the road was pretty good. I have never been on that road when a two wheel drive vehicle would have been a problem. Sometimes there will be large puddles, but the bottom has always been solid.
That being said, I get more comments about how bad the road is on Crisp Point videos that any other videos. I don't understand what the problem is. Sure it gets wash boardy at times, but to me, that's pretty normal for dirt roads. Someone commented on this video that they have a shirt that says something like "I survived the road to Crisp Point Lighthouse". There must be something to all those comments, but to me, it's not a bad road at all.
How do you define an agate? Why is the striped quartz at 6:43 not considered an agate?
That one at 6:43 was probably actually quartzite, which is the mineral quartz, but is also metamorphosed sandstone. If it was quartzite, you'd be able to see graininess in it. Agate is microcrystalline quartz, so you can't see grains or individual quartz crystals. The stripes on that were nice, but not nearly as crisp as they'd be on an agate.

That might change from year to year. I'm not sure about this beach, but there are Great Lakes beaches that can go from rocky to sandy or vice versa after a big storm. In my experience here though, west is usually better.

Yes, I know that people call them that, but I don't like the name so I don't use it. I really dislike all the magical healing rock stuff and "hag stone" sounds a little too close to that for me.

I would be picking up so many rocks. But I don't know any better yet. That is about a 10 hour drive almost straight North from where I am.
That's a long drive. I'm only about four hours away, so I sometimes make day trips up there. Long day though.

Later that day, Sam and I went on a Yooperlite hunt. That video will be out soon. The word "Yooper" mean someone who is from the U.P. If you say "U.P." it sounds like Yoo Pee. So someone from the Yoo Pee is a Yooper.
* Isn't it hard to find agates on misty & cloudy days? Seems like the lack of sun would make hunting harder.. At the 12:32 mark there are a lot of stripy rocks.
I don't think so. the sun might help, but we did pretty good on agates without it. Not on this beach maybe, but for the whole trip we got quite a few.

I have a Convoy S2 that I like, but there are bigger ones out there. I went hunting them with a guy who has about a dozen lights earlier this summer and he recommends the Alonefire SV74 365nm.

I don't leave rocks behind just because they won't tumble. Lots of rocks I leave behind would probably tumble very well. I just try to not have too many rocks piling up at home.
I love it up there but that light house is so hard to get to.
That's what everyone keeps telling me. I have never been on that road when it has been very bad. It was really good when Sam and I were there. Are you not used to driving on dirt roads or does that road get very bad between gradings?
@@MichiganRocks We drove a minivan when we went. It was some years back. I was so afraid we were going to get stuck. Plus, the drive seemed to never end. Once we finally arrived we stayed a very long time because I was nervous about the drive back. Lol It was beautiful though!

@@helgavoorneveld1530 Ok that's better. There are a LOT of rocks on screen at that time. If it's yellow, my guess is that it's iron stained quartz or quartzite. That color doesn't usually go all the way through the rock.

Pardon my ignorance but does does it really get into the lower 40s in late July in northern Michigan? It was nearly 100 here today. 😮
This was filmed in mid June. Daytime temperatures were between the mid forties and low fifties for the four days we were there. Other years, it has been hot. I was just to this area a couple days ago and it was probably in the upper seventies or eighty. If I ever go camping in the U.P. I always bring jeans and a sweatshirt, no matter what time of year it is.
I only got to go rock hunting in the U P once this year. The only good part is that it was for a whole week.
Next year. Next year.
My longest trip was four days and I think it rained every one of them. Next year.

What months are best for someone unfamiliar with the UP to come up and rock hunt? Coming from Pittsburgh PA.
Earlier in the season is the best to find rocks, but it's also cold and hard to predict exactly how early to come. If you get there too early, there might still be piles of ice on the beach. I have gone in mid June a lot. At that time, the water is still so cold that your feet will be very cold if you're going in without waders. You never get used to the temperature. I just got back yesterday from a three day trip. The water was very pleasant to wade in and Sam and I found quite a few agates. Actually Sam found quite a few and I found a couple. The weather was great and the beach walk was much more pleasant than earlier in the year.
When visiting the U.P., always bring a sweatshirt. We wore ours every morning and one evening in our three days in early August. The bugs were not bad at all, but they can be horrible. In the woods, it's mosquitos, but not the beach it's stable flies. I'd suggest buying a mesh bug suit for those, unless you like wearing long pants with your socks pulled up over them. They mostly attack your legs. If you look in the description of this video, I have an Amazon storefront with the bug suit I have listed there.
