This is truly a wonderful creation. The music choice couldn’t be more beautiful; the Great Father Himself dixit: “The aim and final end of all music should be none other than the glory of God and the refreshment of the soul." There’s not better way to honor God than that of making beautiful, meaningful, highest caliber art available to all folks. This is the type of standards and role models a community needs, instead of the sad mediocrity displayed ad nauseam in mainstream media nowadays. Mr. Mitchell, you truly are a legend and your work is a milestone for the enrichment of your community. As for the refreshment of the soul, Mr. Garland delightfully combined the demanding academics of classical ballet with modern touches of urban style and some of the most beautiful and universal music ever written, capturing with each step all the harmony and joy of Bach’s work. The background, the costumes, the stellar camera work, what a stunning combination!!! The performers are magnificent on their own and as an ensemble. The synchronicity is perfect, and I am specially awestruck at Mr. Brockington’s exquisite lines. His limbs go for days, his fourth is stunning, his poise is noble and virile, his jumps are feline and his landings weightless; such a charismatic and beautiful dancer. My two great passions art-wise are Bach’s music and Ballet. This has to be one of the most beautiful pieces ever created combining the magnificence of both. Thank you a million times for this ❤️
Unbelievably beautiful. The strength it takes to be a ballet dancer surpasses that of many athletic endeavors. I do hope that one day though, dancers of all skin color can unote across the stage. Where studios stop looking for a specific ..well...look. As a biracial individual, I lived..breathed dance and until this day I still do. I wanted to practice ballet, but unfortunately there was so much prejudice where I was living, I never got the chance until I was 13. Until that point I only did tap, Broadway and modern. By the time I had the chance to take ballet ..I felt so alientated, and so different than the other girls. In a time of puberty...so I gave it up. And I really regret that. It's nice to see there are safe spaces for all cultures to express what is in their soul, art of all sorts belongs to *everyone*
I love Bach, beautiful inspiring dance piece. The use of the public space was genius. Thank you for keeping art alive, you're all so talented. Bravo👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I have watched this eleventimillion times. This choreography is EVERYTHING: the musicality and the story of our movement comes through so that there is no denying who we are no matter what we do! DTH, I have loved you all my life! Nothing has nor ever will stop Arthur Mitchell's great legacy!
I have never been to Harlem. This video was made couple of months ago but this is the first time I’ve seen it. These dancers are awesome, just awesome. They remind us that there is joy in the world even though we may not see it right in front of us. I don’t care what color you are this dance is for all of us in the human race.
You owe yourself a trip to Harlem. Although a lot of the real Harlem is being transformed there is still a lot left. Come in the spring or early summer. You owe it to yourself. We have a lot to offer. God bless.
This is a beautiful pipece of dance. And one detail has really made me sit up and assess the world again. Ballet slippers have been presented typically as pink, to suit white poeple's skin tone, I saw the black skin tone slippers and felt so glad and emotional. Thank you!
There are only a couple of dance shoe manufacturers who have begun producing shoes to match black skin tones; up until that point, black dancers have had to use make-up to colour their pink shoes to match their skin tone - it's called pancaking. www.theguardian.com/stage/2019/apr/01/pointe-shoes-black-ballet-ballerinas-dancers
It's actually been a serious rule in Dance Theater of Harlem's company and school that soft and point shoes as well as tights be matched to the dancers skin tone. It's great that they now have the option of the covering of the shoe being correct without having to dye or pancake them.
@Lingonberry Love all dancers have to pancake their shoes based on the color of their tights. the entire thing with pointe shoes is that when performing, the shoes match the tights in order to elongate the legs. it isn't racist bc the origins of why practice tights and shoes are pink was a time when there were no people of color in ballet. it was just something that stuck to the ballet world through time and people are beginning to realize that there's more things that can change to be inclusive since there are more aspects to ballet than just classical uniformity. having skin colored shoes for poc is more inclusive and convenient IF they regularly are wearing tights to mimic their skin color. but if a black or white dancer were dancing blue or green tights, they would need to pancake their shoes to be blue or green. and if a white dancer were wearing tan tights, they would need to pancake their shoes to match that tan. pancaking will always be a thing, but what people should be more focused on is regular availability for wider ranges of shades in TIGHTS because tights are what the pancaking is based off of. if you went to a dance store they'd probably only have pink, black, and tan tights.
Absolutely stunning. Incredibly inventive use of urban setting. I love the framing of the subway shots. Really elegant dancing to a beautiful score. All in all just the uplift needed for current times.
Like Albert White (below), I too wept out of joy and delight. Lovely production - so well done. Look forward to continued great things from this company. And, with our future in the hands of such young people, my hope for our U.S. of A. is renewed. Thank you, DTH.
I heard your segment on NPR just a little bit ago so I quickly went to TH-cam to see your performance. Wow! How beautiful. I loved the modern twist! The beautiful colors of the outfits were very eye-catching as well. And you all presented Harlem beautifully. Beauty & Grace! ❤️❤️
fantastic...!! the juxtaposition with the masks, and tennies...and superb camera persons! was working at home, heard a piece on it on NPR on in the background, dropped what I was doing...just outstanding!
What stood out the most to me, was the amazing choreography; highly classical with some fantastic modern twists, all blended seamlessy. Delicate notes from Balanchine and Lifar sprung to mind and I loved it! Thanks for bringing more beauty in the world, even in such difficult times!
A few years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting Arthur Mitchell. It was at the California African American Museum. The museum featured Dance Theatre of Harlem. The exhibit and history displayed was breath taking. It was awesome to see history and a phenomenal teacher, dancer and choreographer standing before me on stage. I was taken aback. I was truly humbled by his presence.
Thank you for inspiring my emotion. ❤️People know that these people, including dancers and all staff members make so much efforts for years and years to produce a show like this. Your talent is priceless! I hope lockdown / pandemic will be over ASAP and they can perform freely everywhere. Be strong, keep practicing and dancing!!! I do the same. 🤗
i cried through your whole performance. i don’t know a single person this dance troupe, you made me so very proud. very proud you all are amazing. i have never seen ballet in tennis before. great job. God bless you all
bravo...bravissimo!!!......listening to 1A on NPR and immediately had to find this on youtube...just made my day a little better...rest assured i will pass this on to all my friends and family...keep on dancing!!...thankyou thankyou thankyou
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!!! My heart is open and light and free and joyful! Food for the soul. High level beauty and grace. Absolutely stunning! Now to figure out how peel myself away from watching and rewatching...
This video gave me the hope to cope with Covid at that time. Athleticism and courage of the art of dance to take chances and continue to display your art and skill through that extraordinary difficult time.
Outstanding use of novel-public space. Wonderful to see artists risk doing their work in unusual ways (environments). Proof that you win if you: Lead by example and never let adversity make you stop living the life you love".
I was homeless, living in a church and sleeping in the office when DTH came along to SAVE. MY. SANITY. I cannot thank y'all ENOUGH!
Gorgeous choreography to one of my favorite Bach violin concerti.

Hey...that's my old subway station!!! Yeah, 145th! And DTH!! And the City College buildings....what a beautiful backdrop!
I really like this piece! Amazing choreography, brilliantly executed by DTH dancers. This went viral, I can see why xxx
Omg, the choice of music, the modern moves, the clothing and shoes, the camera shots..Seriously, why so little views? This is perfection!
Brava and Bravo. Standing Ovation all around 👏
Bach would have loved this interpretation of his music! 🎼🎶
I love this !!!I remember when I was 15 years old seeing them perform I was blown away and I still I’m and I’m 40 now
