Hello Inna! Welcome to the amazing world of Epica. We are Epicans 🙂
You've just discovered one of the greatest symphonic metal bands ever! Yes, it's the same subgenre as Nightwish, however, Epica also incorporate elements of death metal, as you could hear, and generally it's heavier than Nightwish. I'm glad it didn't discourage you. Not everyone likes growls and screams.
Epica is a Dutch band formed in 2002 by Mark Jansen, he's to guy doing most growls. Mark is the main songwriter, but all 6 band members contribute to songwriting and 4 of them have degree in music. Epica songwriting is really great. Beautiful melodies. Wait till you hear some of their breathtaking ballads!
The gorgeous female lead singer is Simone Simons, a classically trained soprano, so yes, she uses operatic vocals too. In this particular song, you heard mostly Mark's growls, not so much Simone, but in almost all other songs, it's mostly Simone singing and just some growls here and there. Epica often use this duality between Mark's harsh vocals and Simone's angelic soprano, which is called "beauty and the beast". In addition to that, there's also a whole choir with their own melodies and lyrics, which can be considered a third character or third voice in their songs.
Yes, Simone and Floor performed together as well. Mark Jansen's first band was After Forever and Floor was their lead singer. Simone was Mark's girlfriend at the time, he brought her to the band rehearsal where she met Floor and they became friends. When Mark left After Forever, he formed Epica and a teen Simone became their lead singer. I think you should see some of their earliest performances. 🙂
Can you tell me what would you like to hear next? Something heavy? Something more radio-friendly? Some of their wonderful ballads?

Inna, how about a duet between Simone Simmon (Epica's lead and your old friend Floor Jansen (the two are fast friends, roommates several years ago) subjecting their thrilled symphonic metal audience to an operatic duet from Pergolese, "Sabat Mater, Dolorosa." The band is accompanied by a smallish orchestra and a full choir! You will love this!

I got to see Epica last October when they opened for Sabaton on their U.S. Tour. It was an amazing show. You should check out Sabaton as well. The drummer from Sabaton is married to Floor Jansen. Sabaton are a Swedish power metal band with most of their songs being based on military history. I would suggest the music videos for "Bismark" or "Christmas Truce" and then the live performance "En Livstid I Krig (Live - The Great Tour - Gothenburg)"

Keep in mind Epica is a Dutch band so their accents kind of play a part. The male singer started the hi hi hi chant and he meant hey hey hey that rock concerts are known for.

Greetings from Denmark. New subscriber here. I like your reactions. My top 3 bands are Nightwish, Epica and The Warning (3 (young) mexican sisters from Monterey) The first two bands are in the symphonic metal genre with differences like Epica has death metal elements, 3 main singers (Simone, Mark (growl/scream) and almost always a choir) and they incl. symphonic orchestra in most of their tracks. Whereas Nightwish also has a choir and orchestra, but mostly out of Tuomas' keyboard (real voices and instruments from the London Philarmonic Orchestra) but not on scene. Then, The Warning are these very talented ladies now (Dany, guitar and lead lead singer, 23; Pau, drums and part lead part background vocals, 21) and Ale, bass, on occasion lead (ehen her sisters' voice need a break) but masterful backing vocals) great lyrics, great riffs, bass line and drums fills - they play rock (hard/heavy rock with note of punk, k-pop, etc.) If you'd like to react to them, you could start with: Choke (official video and live session): th-cam.com/video/TlOy0XbFVlM/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/dxyRnm-G2PQ/w-d-xo.html

  • @ytcag2007

    Greetings.
Yes, Epica is also symphonic metal.
Here's the link between Nightwish and Epica...
They are sister bands in that they are both symphonic metal bands, however, Floor's first band back in 96 was "After Forever" and Mark Jansen was the guitar player.
Singers Floor and Simone have also been very close since they both went to the same school to take classical vocal training in early 2000s and have remained very close since.
So the link here is that both Mark and Simone are now members of Epica and are extremely close with Floor.
Epica does play with a live orchestra and choir but this is such a bad video to introduce that, in MY opinion, because they're nowhere in sight.
Fans have to break the news in the comments and that's not cool for an intro to such an Epic band, to have to "wish" they could have seen that for their first time watching this band. But again, that's just me.
Thank you for the video, reaction and comments. Stay safe and stay blessed.
    😊❤️🤘🤘

She was in the band After Forever with Mark Jansen (not related to Floor and guitarist of Epica) and Floor is good friends with the lead singer Simone Simons. It is a matter of taste yes. U just said it right. But Epica is not just noice. I have deep respect for Nightwish and I know that they are way more popular than my favourite band Epica, because a lot of non-metalheads like u are into the softer symphonic metal. Why don't u try to listen to the gorgeous eye watering ballads of Epica like Tides Of Time and Rivers live with Apocalyptica? These songs are without the harsh vocals of Mark. Simone's beautiful crystal clear soprano voice was made for Epica's ballads, well and Apocalyptica's amazing ballad Rise Again too especially the Official live one.

@@Kelsea-2002 OK, but both Epica and NW make symphonic metal. Saying that one makes "noise" while the other makes art sounds a bit ridiculous. Epica melodies and overall compositions are beautiful. Even their heavy songs always have some beautiful melodic line. I believe that people who only hear noise, don't have as good ear for music as they may think. I'm saying this as someone who loves orchestral and classical music and even some opera, not just some metalhead who only listens to heavy stuff and nothing else.
