I think if you watch just before the second crash and the flip over, the smoke went around the cockpit area out of driver's view, so Lopez did not have the visual cue of the frontend and tires were done for.

I haven't seen the race, but from this footage it seems like he underestimated the damage from the first crash. The team too, who has monitoring on every millimeter of the car. Maybe they gave him bad advice, or he went on his own, but it seemed like he was greeding for time, he wanted to return to the pit asap, instead of going safe and slow. Huge mistake on Toyota's part, and it cost them the race. I'm glad the pilot is ok.

Was the porsche a back marker? If so, the role of the back marker is to let the faster cars through. Back markers are always at fault.
