The 1988 Moto4 225cc has needed some work for awhile. The other day it left me in the woods after stalling out and hearing that tell tale solenoid 'click' when I hit the starter button. Today I dig in to determine if the problem is the solenoid, a short, something else or both...

my problem is i have to leave my quad on trickle charger all the time and take it off when i wanna use it but i melted a terminal the other day so either i need a new battery or solenoid but it starts if i wiggle and move the positive cable

I have an 86, and when I go to push the start, it just clicks once, I know my battery is good, so would you think it’s just the solenoid? Given, it is pretty cold right now up here in New York

Do the old trick of shorting the solenoid with a screw driver to see if it then cranks. If it cranks when you short the solenoid then I'd replace that.

at 4:05 when you pause it, what is that blue and black wire connected to? on mine it was not hooked to anything just had a circle ring terminal on each wire

One runs back to the start button on the hand grip. The other runs into the harness ground feed. When the start button is depressed the solenoid 'closes' and the starter spins. This is why if you stick a screwdriver between the two poles on the solenoid you can bypass the starter switch if needed.

@@VermontLife right on thank you, mine also has a button hooked up to the side for the starter. start button on handlebar does not engage it, so it was added i guess just picked it up not to long ago thinking i need a new carb, your videos are awesome btw thank you

Do you know where the starter would be? I tried shorting the solenoids but nothing happened, I would assume that my starter is roached

It’s down on the lower part of the front of the motor. About the size of a can of soda. Held in by a few bolts but you should be able to slip it right out of the case with much difficulty once you identify it.

Is that the original plastics? I just grabbed an 86 that’s in good shape for as old as it is. Runs well but I’m giving it some TLC.

Those are the original. It was a barn find in central Vermont a few years back. Pretty amazing.

I was just in North Adams today picked up a 225 Moto 4 I'm having the same issue I am with my big bear I'm only getting spark when I jump the starter solenoid with the key in the off position if I turn the key on I get the lights and everything I can push the starter button and the engine turns over but I have no spark weird condition any idea?

Hmmm. Downstream of solenoid works… signal from handlebars cranks but no spark… check wiring upstream of solenoid for frays or anything exposed. I’ll be interested in what you find. There’s also a big bear moto4 group on Facebook that is worth posting the question in too if you’re still chasing it.

If you go to my channel, there's a quick vid on a 89/90 MOTO4 that has the starter switch wiring terminating wierdly. Like there's something missing. I would like to know where it's supposed to go. Please have a look.

I watched your video. That is the cdi in the back by the battery box. Some years have then up front. Some years in the back. I have a series on a big bear 350 that might be super helpful. In one of the videos I take the harness off the quad and walk through everything end to end. The harness is super similar to yours so it should help get you going. Other option if you’re inclined is to flip to the back of the manual for the wiring diagram and chase it that way. Less fun but another huge help.
