This is a one beer job (or can be if you have your gasket or RVT ready ahead of time). Otherwise...
We have had this 1986 Yamaha Moto4 YFM200DX for more than 15 years. After I bought my first quad we bought this one for Anne Marie rom a fella who had just rebuilt it. Anne has put it through a lot of mud and creek beds over the year and I've never done any clutch work on it. Frankly, I haven't done much work to this one at all. It's just that bullet proof. It's now time to swap out the friction plates and springs.
Torque Specs from Clymer manual for YFM200
    Clutch Cover Screws: 5.1ft-lbs
    Primary Clutch Nut: 56ft-lbs
    Clutch Spring Screw: 4.3ft-lbs
    Clutch Boss Nut: 36ft-lbs
    Shift Cam Segment Screw: 8.7ft-lbs
    Clutch Adjuster Nut: 11ft-lbs
    Primary Clutch Wear Limits:
    YFM200 Shoe Thickness 1.5mm
    Secondary Clutch Limits:
    Friction Plate: 2.8mm
    Clutch Plate Warp Limit: .2mm

I've learned that when buying case gaskets for either a housing of some sort such as your gear box it's wise to order two incase you tear one so you're not sitting in idle waiting for a second one. If you don't have any hiccups with it when installing simply return the second one. Learned that the hard way 🙃

Good call as I've had a few hiccups over the years...

Great video, just in time for me needing to inspect my clutch and centrifugal on the yfm250.
Knowing what you know now, do you think the clutch was slipping? Did the friction plate adjustment help?
From other videos I've seen the grooving in the centrifugal clutch is a big issue for slipping and not grabbing.
I'm confused as to what the clutch pack with the fibre and steel plates does compared to the centrifugal clutch. What are their roles?

Clutch was definitely slipping but it wasn’t noticeable when the motor was cool. Once you got the oil hot the problem would surface. Replacement plates definitely helped. I didn’t adjust the screw on the outside of the case this time around but I had previous to this. I can’t say it made any difference other than making the foot shift feel smoother. I’ll have to study that mechanism more. The grooving, absolutely clean that up. I did that on a few other quads and it really helps bring the bite back.

Regarding the clutch pack and centrifugal… my opinion would be that the clutch pack is essentially how you engage and disengage the transmission during semi auto shifting. The centrifugal, and the gear behind it with the six small springs, seem to reduce any shock to the gears and transmission during shifting at high rpm. Just my opinion but if thought about why have two clutches on the semi autos and that’s my best thought :).

Hey I got a 1986 yamaha moto 4 225 it goes in 1st,2nd,3rd but no 4th 5th and grinds in gears sometimes do you think its the clutch plates?

I’d take to cover off for a look certainly. Make sure there’s no metal in there. If it’s all gears it could be the worm gear that goes to the drive shaft. It sounds like you may be looking at splitting the cases though.

This one was easy for years but gradually got harder. Shifts nice after new pads. Good luck.

Hi how do you torque the 4 bolts on clutch

    • @VermontLife
      @VermontLife  2 ปีที่แล้ว

After I zipped them down with my old Ryobi impact I put a torque wrench on to make sure they are all good. Id' have to double check the manual but I think it was 7ftlbs.
