Engine replacement estimates from multiple shops. Also, get an estimate for a "Used" low mileage engine from multiple sources. The estimate seems quite high to me and I am in California. WE, at our shop, have found this to be a great option for majority of people.

Ditto…. I think you are getting taken advantage of. I have a friend who has a big diesel pusher with a cat engine and replacement for that engine was about the same as what you were quoted for your gasser.
Seriously….. shop around and look at used engines. Local shop here in SC can do it all for sub-6k.
Since it is a gas, you don’t necessarily have to go to big truck centers. You are bound to find a decent and honest shop that can help.
I’m looking forward to you getting the Death Star back out there. I would tend to name it the “YT”…….. for “TH-cam” and also because the Millennium Falcon is a Corellian YT-1300……

    Good morning,
So proud of you for your positive approach to this situation. As a career technology teacher of 34 years, I was thinking the same thing as another one of the comments. Find a community college or advanced high school auto tech program that could put the engine in for you. Hubby (30+ years of drag racing/10 years RVing) said $20,000 is too much! Research engines, RV graveyards, auctions, etc. to find an engine and have the students put it in. They would love to do this because an RV is something sooo different! You gotta do the research work because you have a good RV with a NEW roof! If you need help, just ask! Hubby wants to know what kind of engine?

David, a couple of thoughts. Did your roadside assistance company know you were having engine troubles. They should have paid to tow you to a shop capable of fixing your engine. Sorry, but I don't believe your engine was blown. It was broken but you cracked it back up after a while and drove it on down the road to the gas station. You don't do that with a blown engine. I'm guessing yours is a Ford V-10. Some small shops are hoping to get simple broken wire problems or the like that they can charge you a mint to fix and rip you off. A legitimate repair shop wouldn't charge 20,000 for a new engine. A rebuilt Diesel for our class A would be probably 20-30 k , but not for a gas engine. Did you call anybody else. Did that repair shop put a scanner on your engine and diagnosis anything. If you get another RV or fix the one you got get you a good scanner and learn how to hook it up and read it. It's not hard and they are only 100-300.00 and worth every penny when something goes wrong. Good luck on what ever you choose to do, but never be too quick too trust repair shops. Check the BBB or reviews online. Just a thought.

I agree with Rick that is way to much to pay for an engine. V10 crate motor is less than 5k and labor to install should not be that much.

That price is not realistic! How many miles on the engine? Tow it to Washington State and put it in storage until you are ready is my advise. A remanufacture rebuild isn't that high.
