Not many people have worked out where the Mahindra PikUp sits in the Aussie market but it's already building a lot of friends in the bush. Roothy's never been frightened of barging off into new terrain and so he got his mates at WestPoint to supply a Mahindra PikUp long term so he could test it properly. You might have seen the first part - a beach review - and now this is part two, the bush driving review. There's still an outback review to come but at this stage 'the ugly duckling' on the dual cab market is looking really good for a whole lot of solid engineering reasons. Once again, we need to stress that Roothy's not paid by Mahindra or WestPoint - although he does get to borrow and use their vehicles. However with WestPoint dealerships offering Nissan, Hyundai, Volkswagen, Isuzu UTE, LDV, GWM Haval, Ssangyong and Mahindra, it's not like he couldn't have almost anything he wanted.

Properly it’s not an issue.
This pick up was tryed in copper mining in Chile. Not even one survived. Every one switched to Toyota Hilux. Really hard times to get a spare part .Usually difs and gearbox failed prematurely. There were thousands in the streets at one time. Now the prices went down and nobody wants one of them. Sorry man. It.s a really bad choice for work.
@Kishlay Anand i will be honest with you. I can live with that pick up if only they upgrade the quality of difs and gearbox. And of course spare parts delivery's. Mahindra will not do that . Don't know why. But that is the sad truth.

@@robotech1990 the model is just too old. if my memory is right, it was launched in 2002. They are already testing the SUV version of the next generation model probably it will launch before the end of this year.
We bought a mahindra 65 hp 4wd tractor , I then built a scrub canopy for it and put a blade on the front end loader attachment to clear fence lines . I cleared more trees and regrowth off four fences with it than we did with our 200 hp dozer ( going around really big ones )
I’ve used other popular brands of new tractors at same hp and the mahindra is twice as good , can’t kill it

This is an example of how icons in the motor industry are made. VALUE for money! Be it an XU1 Torana, a GT Falcon, a WRX, a Landrover or Landcruiser.. they all had one thing in common.. they gave bang for their buck where it counted! Mahindra is on the right track here. I look forward to seeing the operation expand

Yep, I'm really not bothered by haters - fact is anyone raving about Toyotas is usually raving about the older models - when they WERE the best around. It's like having the Ford vs Holden argument in 2021....

I've now done near on 100k, km in mine, a couple of electrical niggles (but have seen the same in cars costing 3x as much), mechanically bullet-proof, great to drive and CHEEP! I have driven in sand quite a lot particularly over the last summer on the farm, and initially thought it was 'about average' in sand, but then remembered that my last 2 vehicles that I am comparing it with were both Suzuki's (vehicles notorious for seeing sand not as an obstacle but as 'fun'), I realised that if it is 'average' in sand for an ex-Suzuki driver, it is actually pretty good compared to the 'mainstream' 4WDs.

I'd say most of the hate for this vehicle comes from the fact that it's Indian. If you took the Mahindra badges off it and told everyone it's an entry level Toyota people would lap it up.
I found alot of people that don't like it have either considered buying or own a mahindra utv or atv

Bombadore Garage at least with ether of those cars you can get parts easily and readily and the colorados are better built I’ve worked on colorados and mahindras never a ranger so I can’t have an opinion on the build of that

As for the rest of the running gear its all from well proven brands like borgwarner and eaton and is very easily available even more so than Colorado parts and cheaper as well

As a Mahindra user I can assure you that you can have some minor issues with electronic ( very little chances) but Mahindra engines and transmission is Bullet proof. Using Mahindra tractor since 2005 and suv version since 2012

Nice video. Considering buying the double cab. I like to see the video. Dad got single cab for 3 years. Does about 20k kms per year, hard dirt roads next to train tracs. He drives hard. That Mahindra still feels like the day he got it.
I had my doubts straight up , after watching this I definitely want to see what becomes of this machine …The look of it grew on me too watching , I like it ..

Who cares what it looks like when you are inside it? The engineers are world class so I’m sure they know where to locate axles. It’s interesting that straightaway those with high disposable income want to do lifts and add bigger running gear, then wonder why things break because they weren’t in the engineering specifications to start with. Anyway , each to their own. I will stick to my D2 that came complete from factory with (nearly) all the bells and whistles. Before you start with the stupid remarks about reliability, it’s as good as any vehicle when properly serviced. 👍🏻🙏🏽🙏🏽😷😷🦘🦘
I'm three weeks into a mahindra s6+ and I'm loving it
I'm actually surprised about how quick this thing can accelerate when needed. Fantastic gear box, comfy seats, quiet road noise, Bluetooth capability, great cabin visibility.
And that's the base model single cab.
This truck is huge fir the price.

Mahindra is a company that's been going since the 1970s, I brought the Willys Jeep knockoff they made first, everything was a indian copy of the original, but upper cylinder lubricant had to be added to the petrol engine every fill, it never missed a beat, tough as nails and still going strong when we sold it.
I remember years ago as a Car Salesman, a Farmer walking past spotted a Mahindra Cab Chassis on the corner of the yard. He looked all over it and looked a second time at the price.
He said to me "I just spent the same amount on an agricultural vehicle that seats two, carries 100kg in the back, has no doors and a roof that won't stop decent hail "
He went and cancelled his order and bought my Mahindra.
I've spoken to him numerous times since. He loves the truck and said it does everything his Toyota did and he's never had to spend a cent on it.
He's already decided to replace it with another Mahindra when the day comes.

@Harry Dodds have you actually seen a defender up close? Windscreen frames aren't square, every panel looks like it's already been scrub bashing. Shut lines are horrendous and visible welds are porous. And they were comparably exspensive.
Tbh any scorpio before 2019 was a pile of doodoo and if your friend enjoyed it then he will find the new scorpio a lot more surprising. The improvement was drastic and the reliability issue with the gearbox and sloppy steering has improved immensely. Go for the 2.2 if it's available there and please don't go for automatic, the manual is on par with some of the well known 4x4 out there. One issue is the suspension on the front and the arb would do miracles.
I got mine 12months ago and have done 42000 KMS and the only problem I've had is the rear shock rubbers. I love my little truck.
I drive a 2004 model DI Turbo engine Mahindra Scorpio for farm use in India and love it.
Hubby being a older style Landy lover, he's impressed with this vehicle! He's looking forward to seeing more video's. Keep 'em coming mate...👍

You tell them Roothy ! I see many well known you tubers knocking the Mahindra ! I have been in India working in the motor industry and the trucks are everywhere and are pretty indestructible if you see some of the road conditions and volume of traffic ! I love them .
Ive got the 2019 mahindra scorpio s11. Im currently on 150 000 kms on the clock and had absolutely no issues what so ever. I've towed 2 tons on a trailer 1300km far. Went offroading in all kinds of conditions and ofcourse lots of tarmac. Is really cheap to maintain and really really fuel efficient. Absolutely love my Mahindra. Im from South Africa and the are becoming pretty well loved vehicles this side.

This thing is really growing into me also and I'm amazed all the things I'm doing at my farm with it which I tnought I would probably not be doing after I sold my 70 series ute.....well, I was worng! It's amazingly comfortable for a working vehicle and I 've been doing essentially what I just saw in your video but with loads of logs, fence posts, fertilizer bags, etc., etc.. ..and all for half of the money Id spent for a hilux or more for a 70 series!!! GOOD JOB MAHINDRA!!!

to put into perspective....here the mahindra s10 costs around 88 million pesos, the hilux is around 160 million and the 70 series aroud 220 or 240 million pesos!!!

You've nailed it Jamie - when I started driving 40's Toyotas they were still everywhere and being used, now they're collectors items. The world moves, most 4wd's get softer, I need something tougher - not done testing yet tho.

Great video I agree the Mahindra is going to shake the utility market. Too many 4x4s have got softer, lighter, too complex and way too many electronic unnecessary features. I look forward to more in depth on this vehicle. I have heard the rear suspension is an area that needs work too stiff and prone to bump steer. What are your thoughts?

@@destroyedsoul1791 for some people it would be one of their vehicles from a more well known brand, but Mahindra has a way of creeping into your heart. You'll probably end up loving more then a lot of the previous vehicles you've own. Especially as Mahindra as seen as the underdog, but it will prove itself over and over.

I’ve had 2 of them , 1st one for 12 years , and the one I’ve got now for 2 years

@@chriscuppywhitehead6722 Lookup "Mahindra Scorpio" parts in Ebay. You can get as many parts as you want from India. This is essentially the same vehicle, In india it was/is an SUV and Australia it is a Pickup. If you cannot get it from Mahindra Australia you can get Scorpio parts shipped over.
Mahindra makes robust vehicles. Hope they launch Mahindra Scorpio SUV there in Australia. Amazingly nice SUV

Mark Dodgy motors in Cairns Queensland just put the signs up as a dealer be interesting to see what happens. One thing I know is I see a lot of crusers driving around in the city but I never see them out bush. I think after the weekly repayments and insurance with high fuel costs they can't afford to go bush 😅🤣😅🙈
I'm a big believed in the cheaper something is to run, the further you'll go in it. Which is why the 76 Series I bought lasted a mere two years...

The guy who owns Cairns kabab house has 2 great wall Ute's he has a kabab truck in Weipa and them Ute's travel the 6/7 hour drive from cairns to Weipa all year (apart from wet season) carting supply's there stock standard out of the box.

We have a few of the 2wd smaller utes at work. They have a big cab with more room than the Japanese tutes and you can sit in them with a hard hat on. They have held up as well as the Hilux's and the engines are way more quieter. Our vehicles are limited to 20kph and spend all day idling but the Mahindras have been surprisingly good.
I've just ordered (2 weeks ago) an S6+ 4x4 Single Cab Chassis, with Aluminium tray and Steel Bullbar.
Upsides and downsides as I see it.
1. UP - Price/Cost. 3/5 the price of a similar spec Hilux, 1/2 that of a 70 series. No finance ( in my situation) necessary.
2. DOWN - Limited Dealer Network. Concerns about spare parts and accessory availability.
3. UP - Basic Platform. Potentially, not as scared to treat it a bit rough or modify it as other brand new trucks.
4. DOWN - Information. Limited info on upgrading and simple repairs than other popular brands.
5. UP - Not too modern. Any mechanic, bush or qualified can understand the vehicle.
There are are of course more (feel free to add), but many are combined Upsides an Downsides.
eg. Styling. You won't pick up many shelas driving this truck but the ones you do you know they like you for you rather than your car.

Haha - ok, I got interested when Westpoint got interested - because I knew in the past that Mah distributorship in Aussie was erratic, usually a dealer or individual. Now the Mahindra company itself is here in Australia and dealers are jumping on board all over the country. Potentially we have a game changer here - but more testing and more time will tell!

I travel and backpack for 2 years through India,Pakistan,Nepal, Himalayas ect ect….and I can honestly say that I’ve seen Mahindras fully LOADED and travelling up to Basecamp on the scariest tracks I’ve ever seen on the Annapurna circuit at 5000m above sea level. So….yes im with you too Roothy
Mahindra are great cars and I'd certainly support India or Korea (SsangYong) over anything Chinese just on principle. Mahindra's biggest challenge is it's a victim of its own success at the moment. Orders for the new XUV700 have blown out 12 months. The Thar has a long waiting list. And I suspect it will be the same for the new Scorpio. Given they can't fulfill orders in India, I can't see them being able to launch new models in Australia in an acceptable time frame. By the time the Scorpio makes it to Australia in 2023 it will largely be uncompetitive in many ways such as tech, styling etc. I know the chip shortage hasn't helped but if Mahindra want to be a serious player in the export market, they need to find a way of upping production.

For Mahindra and India haters out there, Mahindra makes aircrafts, trucks, buses, earth movers, troop carrier trucks, armoured fighting vehicles and light commercial vehicles along with tractors and cars. India trusts Mahindra and they always surpassed our expectations. I'm happy to see India's vehicles and technology being used abroad.

My darling wife & I recently retired from the USA to southern Costa Rica and have been shopping around for a reliable diesel 4x4 pik up truck. But the costs and the electronic complexities of buying something like a slightly used Toyota Hilux have proved prohibitive.
I asked a former coworking and very good friend from Gujarat, India what he knew about the Mahindra Pik-Up, and he sent me this exact video of yours :) Our new 2024 base-model Pik-Up will be delivered to Perez Zeledon, Costa Rica by Veinsa Motors this week. We ordered the meatier all terrain tires, trailer hitch, and rear-bed Canopy as extras.

I had one of the 1991 CJ3 Mahindra's we got in Aus, here in Tas it was great off road but very slow on road ,I guess they have learnt a thing or two about quality over the years. Love to give one a run
I think you've nailed it there roothy, utes today are becoming more like luxury suv's(& a price to match)... these Ute's seem to follow the 'keep it simple' principle... i will have to look to see if there here in WA...
I love my 2014 model... fully kitted out. The only flaws are its ride height, although 2inch kits available... and the exhaust squashes past the chassis so the torq-it upgrade is recommended... not much it can’t handle...
On paper they seemed like good cars, this video just cements that fact
I remember in the early 90s when Mahindra 4WDs arrived in Rockhampton. They were touted as solid, inexpensive vehicles. And yes, they were very cheap in terms of purchase price compared to other off-road vehicles at the time. However, they were also very cheap in terms of construction. The test drive/display models had a lot of rust (assumed to be from the trip over from India) starting in the body and other parts and they looked like Willys Jeep knock-offs.
But, as with most vehicles, they've obviously improved in the past 30 odd years.
Mahindra actually used to manufacture some vehicles under license from Jeep back then.
I've always liked the look of them, kind of the love child of a G Wagon and a 70 series. Down side is not a huge market out there for after market accessories

I’ve never understood why people fork out $80k for a 79 series and then have to correct the engineering defects like the wheel track at the back. It’s no wonder Toyota don’t fix it when you happily pay the $80k and then fix it yourself. Why would they? People need to “vote with their feet” as they used to say. Stop buying them, the price comes down and maybe Mr Toyota will fix the problems. This ute doesn’t look that bad to me, I would personally rather practicality over style. Maybe you could buy one of these instead of the 79 series and also spoil yourself with a good boat or caravan. Good work Roothy.

Observations :
1) Every month I see more and more of these Mahindra 4wd's in the district. Farmers west of the great divide are buying them.
2) These vehicles suit narrow farm tracks.
3) The Mahindra is made in India which is a Commonwealth country - Australia's friend and allie. The best thing is that it's not Chinese.
4) Eaton Fuller are well known for making strong and reliable drive train systems. Same is true for Borg Warner. Simplicity and reliability wrapped in one package.
5) QLD National Park's are testing these as they are with Suzuki 4wd's. If accepted they will be used for small jobs and not a replacement for the Toyota 79's currently in use.
Note : These vehicles provide a fully road registerable and safer option than Side by Side and Quad Bikes which are loathed by government bureaucrats whom believe they are unsafe.
That vehicle is literally built to last for decades. That diff on offering makes it a suitable option for outback off-roading

I've got one and I love it
As a mechanic i have serviced these Mahindras and found no oil leaks , brakes wear well. Wheel studs are larger than 79 series toyota, air cleaned is oil impregnated WTF Top vebicle . Tractor yes but a vehicle built for Australia cheers

When i comes to 4x4 i would take reliability as my first preferance 2nd would be performance and looks when it comes to a rig are absolutely irrelivant compared to its ability to complete the tasks i want it to. Thats in my mind. I met a couple that have had a Mahindra for a long time and just mention the vehicle and thier eyes lite up because for them its been a winner in every way.

Well said and to the point said with very clear explanation of what this Mahindra pickup is capable of. Also i agree with you that now a days people are getting attracted to features and fancier looks but they are forgetting about the practicality of a tough and long lasting SUV like Mahindra pickups, no wonder why Mahindra sells SUVs in India so well. Keep it up reviewing these kind of Gems which Audience and buyers needs to know before buying any SUV or Pickups. Cheers 🍻

I don't regret buying my Dmax but I wish these videos if yours came out about 2 years ago.
Honestly I didn't even consider this, but your word I trust and if you say they are good than I'll seriously consider looking at their build quality for my next ute. Because I got a Dmax hopefully this won't be for some time. I hope.

Back in the early 90's Mahindra introduced those Willy's Jeep knock offs with Perkins diesels. They were crude and horrible, but I saw them run as work vehicles in an underground mine in WA. They were small enough to drive them into the cage of the shaft sink winder to be lower underground to be driven in the narrow decline. They were perfect for the job. I had to rewire the electrics at the time, as the Indian wiring ran under the guards and was rock damaged very quickly. Wiring colour would start out as green and end up as purple at the end, foe example.
Mahindra has improved massively thanks to the lessons it has learned from a little Korean brand it owns, Ssangyong, who also produce some pretty tough 4wds.

Maybe its just where I live down in Tasmania, but I've worked in the automotive spare parts industry and hadn't even heard of Mahindra! I totally agree with you that most 4x4's are getting more like soft roaders, its a pity we are in a situation but we really do need a proper 4x4 option thats affordable. This one looks promising, my main interests are how far can we modify them? It looks like it could use some more ground clearance! I wonder what size tyres and lift can go on them before you run into too many problems.

It runs on a torsion bar and shocks in the front. No coil springs. So lifting is very limited.
Currently have 265 70 R17 General Grabber AT3 on mine and it gives it a pinch more clearance.

No issues on the 265 70 R16.
As long as your wheel does not have an aggressive offset.
How much could u modify them? Just look at the Taiwanese godzilla version of this.
thats all that needed on a pickup less things to break torque and room to wiggle inside . would love to have a few in the cartibbean or even in the UK
Ute market is already split. Ute based SUVs, in essence, for suburban duties, normally highly specified, like their cousin - wagon based SUVs. And basic ute models used more as light trucks than SUVs.
Nothing wrong with either use case. SUVs suit some and can ride well but they don't carry a lot. Suburbanites are active too, bikes, canoes, second hand furniture etc etc - not surprised they go after the higher specified utes. Maybe some of those utes could have more SUV like suspension.
The "light truck" users probably don't mind the truck like ride and are happy to stick with more heavy duty components.
Australians seem to be stuck on the idea that everyone has to have the same use case and like the same vehicles. Why do I care if someone wants a high spec ute to drive around the burbs? It's their choice. Same as brand. If you love Toyota, cool. If you don't, cool.
The Mahindra will tap into the 'light truck' market. People who want a ute for its practicality and ability to tolerate a range of drive modes and uses that may be less kind to the higher spec models. And dare I say it, they suit a different driving style. Some people need to get where they're going quick smart. Some are happy where they 'are'.
I'm not currently in the market, my ute is 3 years old, but if I was I'd seriously have a look at the Mahindra. It looks more traditional, seems like it would suit taller drivers and sounds like its built for the 'light truck' people - of which I am one. And don't forget price. When I drove the Hilux and Ranger I was suitably impressed. Not "$25K better than other options" impressed though.
For the Mahindra, proof is in the driving and I've not yet driven one. Time will tell.

I wish they had a live axle front end.

Sounds good but so many questions! Longevity of parts, cost, the tub hanging off like my Triton wit a 1 tonne rating. Worth sussing out.

I’m liking the look of the S10 mHawk Black edition with the tray back so I can put a jack off style canopy box on it, I’m live semi rural worked on farms for many years and to get a car that is possibly as reliable as a tractor with all those extras then I’m sold gonna have to go have a look at Mahindra Toowoomba and maybe get a test drive
