AUSTRALIAN TESTING MAHINDRA'S new AUTOMATIC! Roothy gets involved.
A rare glimpse into how a manufacturer tests a new vehicle.
When Mahindra Australia invited me along to see how they test vehicles before releasing them in the market I had to go along. Any excuse to hit the Red Centre any time, but the testing involves old mates of mine and this is pretty much an Australian first. Sure, lots of companies test their vehicles here in the harshest conditions on the planet but for a company to have enough confidence to invite a journalist was a first.
There's nothing like going bush with instructions to go as hard as you can on the vehicle. The automatic was predictably excellent - being made by Aisan, the same company that makes the Hilux 'box - but the way Mahindra have sequenced the changing to the motor's attributes is beautiful. Check this clip, and a huge thanks to Dan Snare who put this clip together on behalf of mahindra Australia.

I haven’t heard anything negative about the Mahindra from an Aussie who has driven one from the day they started selling them in Australia. Roothy would not have bought a Mahindra to set up and use to go touring with the handbrake if he had any doubts about them.

I have rented ( unofficially) a Mahindra SUV for 5 weeks when I was in India a few years ago. I was driving myself ( it was an Herculean task) ; no chauffeur . Of all the midsize SUVs I have driven by various manufacturers in the world, Mahindra is the best. Besides having a great engine, it’s handling is superb. It hugs to the road. It’s rolling and pitching are exact. Above all, it has most excellent ride comfort in almost all terrains. Most of the time you don’t even feel that you are in a SUV. Well, I am a car guy.

I dont quite understand why Mahindra have chosen to remain so low key in the Aussie market. Their vehicles are much better built than the Chinese ones flooding the market.

Mahindras have conquered the Himalayas and the Thar desert in India. So this thing is in its habitat in the middle of Australia.

There needs to be more dealership is in every state and spare parts more available, that's the only way I can see the Mahindra going up in sales.

Great to see it's finally made it to Oz. If I bring a dual cab into the family it needs to be auto for my wife. I leave the manuals to my old cruisers. Will definitely be having e a look at them.

We need more of the rugged off roaders. Mahindra ticks all the boxes.

Happy to see Mahindra life style pickup in Australia.... ,You guys are lucky and im jealous, Mahindra stopped it's production of lifestyle pickup in India due to poor sales...., We Indians still needed some more time to digest the lifestyle pickup idea...😆😆😆

Mahindra engines are bulletproof and Mahindra cars are made to work in extreme heat, cold and rugged terrain. India’s got these situations. M a Mahindra Scorpio user since 2012 and now bought a Thar 4WD in 2023. No problem so far, just normal servicing and stuff

I do hope Anand Mahindra watches these videos. You Aussies test better than any Mahindra engineer. Keep it up.

Good to see. Does it have neutral between high and low range. (For flat towing).
