I think I commented on one of the other videos, and I’ll say it again. Gene is a good bass player and musician. And he’s very good in the studio, which is a controlled environment. Same caliber as Entwistle? No way.
Entwistle is uncomparable! Gene surprised sometimes but sorry, John Entwistle was KingBass!
Listen to Hard luck woman, with that bass line Gene became one of my favourite bass players.

This video reminds me of an old Bass Player Magazine article that stated "Gene Simmons isn't Victor Wooten but Victor Wooten isn't Gene Simmons".
Gene is a good rock player. Perfect for Rock and Roll music!
Gene is a great bass player and this debate is easily finished with 2 words: Goin' blind.
Ppl seem to overlook that Gene is also singing lead vocals as well as playing ona good many number of their setlist. Gene is more than "a bassist" he's a songwriter, singer, arranger, guitar player and bassist..he wore a lot of hats in Kiss.
I remember an interview from years ago where he said you've got two guitars playing different parts, so the bass needs to be straightforward to ground the song, fancy complicated bass lines wouldn't have worked.
He's also said, in response to being asked about the slides, that he really didn't know how to play bass properly when he started out so he just played slides as embellishments.

OK. Stop. I play bass. I like Gene Simmons. Bass is not guitar. Totally two different beasts. I mostly play with a pick not just because I moved to bass from guitar but like the sound. From the attack on the strings regarding the tone to how I hold the pick and move it. I forget what they call it on guitar but you hit the root every other notes to sound like a merry go round. On bass you can hit straight 8ths using the pick and make it sound like a synthesizer. But I play strictly rock and roll or metal and think slapping is about the dumbest shit i have ever heard. Dont like country or rather playing country but everyone dhould get my point.
But when it comes to bass? If you dont play exactly like the "puritans" think you should play, they will trash you. Two extremely good bassists. Gezzer Butler and Lemmy Kilmister and totally not playing like Bass Students. Gezzer digs into the strings with fingers, Lemmy picks hard, loud and dirty. What sux now is everyone plays like with no desire to make your own. Gene Simmons plays like Gene Simmons. I like that.
Kiss’s musicianship is Pro musician caliber… You absolutely don’t have to be a virtuoso musician Kiss is good example of that, however they aren’t slouches, they were musically solid and they wrote their own material, were they Lennon and McCartney or Frey and Henley caliber no,were they good songs that people wanted to hear absolutely..
Wow! That was written just right! I too consider Stanley/Simmons as much as Lennon/McCartney and the also brilliant Henley/Frey! All landmarks in our musical journey!

I think Gene applied himself more in the early years.
Kiss is undeniably one of Rocks greatest bands but it’s obvious he isn’t a very good bassist. Anyone that’s played music for a long time, will agree
He's clearly playing the superstition lick. All the guys in Kiss could play well. You did not make it in a band in the nineteen seventies playing clubs and lots of gigs without being able to play
I've always been very meh about Kiss. They sound hollow to me and neither of those clips impressed. I do like Detroit Rock City though. Rock on man :)
for whatever reason davie504 heard gene and then wanted to play bass, so as much as I hate the dude on a personal level and his bass playing even more, he has contributed to the world of bass. I never liked kiss but hard to discredit their impact on music. I know there some people that love kiss and that's great, and it's also the reason music platforms have a skip button that I can't press fast enough when something come on I just don't like.
What do you have to do to be considered good on Bass? Play 100 notes in one song finger tap a whole song play someone else’s crap better? Or be consistent and never or rarely make mistakes live? Or have your own sound which Gene does . Just because you can play fast doesn’t mean crap. If that was the case Jimmy Hendrix would’ve been passed long ago.
I've been lucky enough to play bass guitar since I was 14. It took me at least 2 years to figure out that your base kind of flies through the arrangement, on beat!
Your job as part of the rhythm section including the drummer, is to lock together and be the strength around the song! Any bass player who tries to play it like an electric guitar is not a true bass player. Billy Shehan is the biggest offender!
Regardless of who you like better, entwhistle was far more advanced a player than Gene is, he had finger techniques Gene has never at least in Kiss has ever displayed that he's capable of. As far as tone, Entwhistle had a massive lead tone... Unless Page was hammered you can't compare the two...
John E. was one of a kind. NO-body compares to him. No one ever played like him, and those who try to imitate John will never sound like him. Many other pro players will tell you the same thing.
Parasite is a great jam. Otherwise I think he’s just ok. This clip isn’t impressive. Ok enough for Kiss at least.
Ace Frehley played bass on the album recording for Parasite. Gene didn’t play bass on several album tracks throughout the years.
