Thank you for this video. We had concerns about infantile spasm (2nd Video) with our daughter. We did an EEG and all came back normal thankfully. She is suffering from Infant Shudders (1st Video) it’s nothing to be concerned about and can affect infants from 4months until 1.5-2yrs. Doc says she will grow out of it usually by the time they walk. Infant shudders doesn’t effect their mood. They can continue on playing, smiling, talking immediately after the episode. I never even heard of infant shudders until Doc showed us this actual video today. 2nd Video - Infant Spasm (Neurological) is very serious and effects the child a lot more after the episode. It can really upset them. 3rd Video - West Syndrome. This is the first time I have heard of this. Poor Child 😢
Hi, my 1 year old son started doing similar movements like the first baby (fists clenched, tight jaw, surprised face, and a shudder as when you are stretching your body after a long sleep). They have started one week ago (not sure if linked, but a few days before had a big scare with a chair falling next to him) and have not developed much, if anything now it seems they are less frequent/less intense. He is doing this mostly when sitting in his high chair or getting frustrated with something, but there were 1-2 occasions when he did it while we were holding him in our arms or standing up in front of his toys. He doesn't seem affected by this at all, but his shudder face seem very strange, as he is surprised when it happens but goes away just as fast when it stops as if nothing happened. It only lasts 1-2 seconds and happens like 4-5 times a day. In the first two days when this started, he had a few shudders within 20 seconds of each other that also lasted 1-2 seconds each. We have been to a neurologist and recommended an EEG just to be on the safe side, but from what I am reading about shudder syndrome I am reluctant to put ourselves through the risk of hospitalisation during covid times if it's nothing serious. On the other hand, I really don't want to ignore something that would require treatment. My question is... is there any chance for Infantile Spasms to get less in frequency and intensity once they started? I am hopeful for the fact that his shuddering seems to be less frequent and intense than 4 days ago. Thank you!
How old is your baby, if it is shuddering then it is likely to resolve when he is over a year old, we were very worried when we first notice my boy's abnormal movement but lucky I video it and can show it to doctors, we were so relieved when we were told it is shuddering as it will and has resolved. So don't worry too much, just keep an eye on him and hopefully it will reduce in frequency.
He started doing it around 12 months actually, but now they are happening very seldom. He actually only does it when angry/frustrated and it happens maybe once or twice a week, no particular pattern or frequency. Seems to be more often when he is teething. We eventually skipped on going to a second neurologist visit, as in the first one they recommended the extra procedures only for our own peace of mind, as they were also suspecting shudder sindrome
