How to Make GOOD Autoscroll Levels in Super Mario Maker 2 | Tips and Tricks

  • One of the worst types of levels in super mario maker 2 are auto scrollers. Waiting in levels is very annoying for a lot of players, especially those that are speedrunners. That’s not to say autoscrolling, moving platforms, or waiting levels can't be good though, so today I’m going to be giving some tips, tricks and ideas on how to make good levels using the autoscroll in super mario maker 2!

    I wish they had just a light block on dark stages or a dark block on light stages. But to be honest the effect for the night underwater should've been more creative. Maybe a whirlpool will appear making Mario, Luigi, toad, or toadette fall down. 2 night time levels are just uncreative

      Not necessarily. Dark water levels were a staple feature of NSMBW and NSMBU, so I’m glad that we get to have them, even if most players don’t use them properly.

      A dark platforming level and a dark water level are not the same thing. I'm glad the game has both.
      Light block is a good idea, but I think Nintendo wanted to avoid creating parts that only work in a specific theme. So POW block / P-switch it is.

      ​@@zerarch77Outside of dark levels, it could be particularly useful for puzzles. Puzzle creators have been begging for an unbreakable, carriable block that doesn't explode like the POW

    I use custom scroll all the time. With scroll stop, you can hide stuff offscreen and also have great transitions into subsequent rooms. This is a great mechanism used a lot in troll levels.

    A good thing to note about your downtime section from 12:26 to 13:21 is that you can fill this downtime with optional challenges.
    The players who need the downtime can use it without doing this challenge.
    While the player who does not need the downtime and would otherwise be bored during this section can try this challenge to get something similar to a power up, big coin, or one up.
    Lastly, this wouldn’t need to be a challenge or have a punishment for failing. This could be just a section where you can wall jump up for a ten coin; not a challenge but still fills the wait time and gives the player something to do. The only problem with this is that this would not end in as downtime-y downtime

    Good points about keeping the players on their toes and always giving them something to do. That NSMB Wii World 5 level is a classic.
    Honestly, I almost exclusively use autoscroll with airship levels because I feel like people have a perception of autoscroll fitting with those kinds of levels.

    I actually really like autoscrollers when they are done well, an inexperienced creator may make a bad level but in my opinion a great kaizo stage works well with an autoscroller especially when you’re trying to keep the pacing consistent.

    I was honestly questioning how an Odyssey Central video could talk about FNaF without putting a jumpscare in it at some point. Good to know that even the outros aren't safe anymore (gives me something to look out for while waiting for the video to end though so props for putting what you taught into practice)

    The more levels I've made the more I've come to appreciate autoscroll. With normal camerascroll you run into a lot of problems with item/enemy spawning and player vision that would require an absurd amount of playtesting to solve properly, but can be solved with simple autoscroll or use of scroll stops.
    Like in the mentioned "Above The Clouds, Beyond The Vines" there's chain chomps with parachutes dropping down that could be extra difficult kinda unfair or super trivial without either autoscroll or super tight balancing. In vertical subworlds (or levels which scroll in both directions) it can be hard to see ahead because the camera does not keep Mario in the center of the view. With vertical autoscroll you can help the player see ahead before they make their move.
    In many cases having less variables in how your level functions helps you focus on making the experience actually fun for the player.

    My tip for autoscrollers is to make them like a geometry dash level, always moving at the speed of the player. You probably have seen some music levels do this, it makes the auto scroll an actually fun mechanic.

    I think I should probably mention that I have something to take from the Yoshi games.
    You see, there is a lot more and shorter breathing room in these levels, which is great because if people die a lot in a particular section it is super short

    I only use auto scroll for airship levels because it’s how they work traditionally in the games, not every one but it’s worth noting

    One i imagine for example combining like mid speed autoscroll and the p switch, like for example you reach a checkpoint and in the solid platform after the one you're on has a p switch that you can't get of the ground and a wall of p block to switch and a small obstacle course after it, the thing is you could maximize the time the p switch is active which can reward in getting a secret via active p blocks at the edge of the p switch time out which help you reach an otherwise out of reach pipe or platform with a rare power up, just saying.

    I’d honestly like to see a tips & tricks video with tips for some obscure stuff in smm2 such as password checkpoints & small gimmicks in smm2 such as how cp’s can react to red coins or even. Nighttime underwater auto scroller is a pain but I’d say it could work in the smb3 style only if you know what your doing.

    They should totally have a scroll feature that doesn’t allow you to scroll back, like the original SMB. Though, I guess for vertical sub areas, how would they determine whether it starts at the top or bottom?

    I play and love bullet hell shooter games and those games are usually just 30 minutes of nonstop auto scrolling.
    my advice would be to make autoscrollers feel like bullet hell games.
    tense and with just enough variation that doing them again doesn't feel repetitive.
    bullet hell games are all about pattern memorization anyway so replaying is just inherently satisfying there because the replays become easier as you learn the pattern.

    I made a level a few months ago wherein you're stuck on a moving platform with bullet blasters on either side, trapping you inside, and enemies occasionally being dropped into the already-tight space. You have to either keep bouncing off them while avoiding the bullet bills or throw the enemies out.
    It's very hard, and there's no way it could possibly be anything other than a waiting level. It works because, although you're waiting the whole time, you're trying _very very hard_ to stay alive. The second half of the level is also harder than the first, and has either a medium or hard difficulty.

    I just got a video idea of listing every character's most iconic attacks(at least aerials, specials, tilts, smash attacks, maybe grabs, maybe final smashes not included, although some like zelda could get an honorable mention). Sometimes you could list two for its home series and smash if you know enough lore and there is a need for it, like jigglypuff is known for rest in smash but it works nothing like it in pokemon, and in the anime jigglypuff's main thing is singing which happens to put people in sleep, or yoshi who has an infamous down air but doesn't really do it in mario or yoshi games, expect it just wiggles its legs when doing its flutter jump, rather yoshi's main mechanic and attack is eating enemies.

    Donkey kong tropical freeze has the player wait a lot in the boss fights, and so the boss fights end up being really annoying since nothing interesting happens while you are waiting and its long

    I believe that using auto scroll makes a lot of enemies easier to work with, such as banzai bills, green cheep cheeps, enemies on parachutes, swimming angry Wigglers, and, if you count them as enemies, rotten mushrooms. Not to mention that I’ve seen a lot of people in the NSMBU theme use Bowser in a cloud at the top of the screen (along with auto scroll) to make a meteor level.
    By having these levels have no auto scroll, these enemies become a lot less challenging, and it’s super easy for them to just move away from your before they’re really a threat. Auto scroll forces you to deal with them before they go off screen.
    And, to go back to not making auto scroll dark underwater sections, that’s just terrible advice. In Cloudy NSMBU2, a rather popular NSMBU rom hack that got released recently, there’s a secret room in one level where you’re in a dark underwater section that’s auto scrolling, but there’s a bunch of bulbers (the angler fish enemies) that light your way. Bulbers are an enemy that move from right to left, so having them in an auto scroll environment forces them to be a threat. But, at the same time, they produce light, adding to the atmosphere of the dark underwater level, but not making it too unfair.

    I would like to mention bullet hells as a genre. They are always on-rails but the game requires your constant attention and focus the whole time during typical play. And the dialogue before or after boss fights/levels (if there is any, a specific video game comes to mind) and intros to the levels (before the obstacles start coming in) are the downtime so to speak.

    one tip i have is to not let the player reach the edge, whether through swarming them with obstacles such that staying at the edge is impractical, or simply giving the player no time to get there

    You said "it could feel a bit dry" when the footage showed a desert level, was that a coincedence or on purpose?
    I also did the 911st like, just like the police number, little coincedence there too. Yeah, this was interesting, also love how that idea got into your head somehow and like the arqwardness afterwards, that happens to me too, like in real life, like this angry thought of something, like imagining something even though it didn't actually happen, lololol. Well, here's a joke: What's worse than an underwater level? The answer is a dark underwater level. Next joke: What's worse than a dark underwater level? It's "a dark underwater slow autoscroller". Yes like, autoscrollers are sometimes to make you rush like if there are quick autoscrollers, but there are some slow ones too, and the problem is it does the opposite and makes you wait. In Super Mario Maker 3, there should be a "One-way autoscroller", as in the screen automatically scrolls right, and can't scroll left, but you can push the right invisible boundary to make it scroll faster, you know?

    As a troll level maker I use auto scroll a lot to hide stuff where the player can't see. But if I'm not making a troll level I never use auto scroll because it's annoying to the player and to the maker.

    Toxic Tree Climb [YQC-QLV-F7G] is my honest attempt at a good autoscrolling level. I chose to make it an autoscroller because I wanted the rising poison to stay at the bottom of the screen for the level's atmosphere. I am really proud of it, so if anyone can check it out and give feedback that would be great!
