    Thank you for showing us this awesome technique.
    I recently lost my Father-in-Law and created a memorial pot with stencils following your instructions. Now he has a wonderful stencil of his beloved West Ham on it. I cant thankyou enough for taking time to show and teach us all your work and techniques. You are truly an artist.

    As a back sliding Luddite, may I encourage you to fight the good fight! Your hand cut stencils are so personal. Cricut or Curcit or...machine cut stencils and results are like The Beatles, Or Rolling Stones, Metalicca...Tom Waits, Nancy Griffin and John Prine, hit closer to home. They would look askance at not at progress, just progress they were okay without. Fight the good fight!!! I love the art you and Jackie create. Keep it real!

    Coffee and your latest video in a break from loading work for tomorrow’s Stithians show. Lovely one day show here in Cornwall, the show has been going for donkeys. Farm machinery and insurance, farm animals - best in show, horse and pony showing, craft (that’s me 😁). It’s usually either boiling hot or tipping down. Last few days we’ve had torrential rain and wind, but looking gentle today and set fair for tomorrow. Here’s hoping

      I add 3% Cobalt oxide, you can add less for light blue.

    By the way, I have a Cricut machine, and it is basically a home die-cut machine. It would save you the trouble of cutting out the paper pieces. You could design the shape and then cut out as many as you like, at any size, very easily and quickly and perfectly. But every other step is the same labor of love.

    • @Vsmithpots
      @Vsmithpots  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have a question, if I put say 25 sheets of paper together, will the machine cut all 25 at once? thanks.

    • @kkirsch3583
      @kkirsch3583 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@VsmithpotsHello Vaughan; some of these machines have options to cut rolls of material and not just sheets. I think they would have a “repeat” of some sort to churn out lots at a time. However, you still need to “pick” the cut bits off their backing. An evening’s busywork and you’re set for quite a while! Great for arthritic hands.

    • @Vsmithpots
      @Vsmithpots  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kkirsch3583 I think my scroll saw is fine, it cuts 20-40 at a time. Thanks.

      @@Vsmithpots I think a scroll saw is brilliant! (I’ve not thought to use it that way) 😁👍 Do you make a paper sandwich with something then cut it?

    Love your videos, Vaughan! Thanks for your slip recipe. I want to make white slip using this recipe, do I just add white mason stain? What about about other colors? Did you get black with a mason stain? I couldn't quit hear what you said the black is.

    • @Vsmithpots
      @Vsmithpots  ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a creamy off white as is. I tried adding white stain but it made little difference to the creamy colour. Adding more than 10% gets expensive for slip. I use 6600 Mason stain for black. Any stain will work.

    Vaughan hi, can I ask a question? Why do you brush the damp clay slightly over the stencils? Is it to properly embed the stencils and help get clean lines once the applied slip has dried over the top. I like to use stencils but I just try to get them as flat as I can. Love everything you do, especially when it involves whales. TIA 😊

    • @Vsmithpots
      @Vsmithpots  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I brush to force the paper to adhere thoroughly so there is no bleeding at the edges.

    I'm curious what would happen if you just left them on and burnt them off in the bisque.

    • @chloeuntrau4588
      @chloeuntrau4588 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think that when dry the slip will flake off around the edges..

    • @Vsmithpots
      @Vsmithpots  ปีที่แล้ว

      The paper burns leaving a thin air bubble covered by fired slip, which crumbles leaving rough edges.

      You can get the chemical analysis online for fritt3110. Ferro Frit 3110 is a 'High Alkaline' Frit that is low in Boron. It is used in clay bodies.

    What would happen if you fired and a piece of paper was left behind ?

    • @Vsmithpots
      @Vsmithpots  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The thin layer of clay on top of the paper stencil would still be there and removing it is hard to do so cleanly.

    Just for educational purposes... what does it mean that these whale bowls are "single layer"? If you were to do, say, a double layer, what would that en-TAIL? hahaha. But seriously, I would love to see that demonstrated on something smaller and simpler so that it does not put you out so much time.
