I started in November. I'm a working bassist who lost all my gigs because of Covid. So one night, in a pissed off state, I started to paint...had always wanted to try it. Always had a very heathy respect and appreciation for painting and artists. Wound up really enjoying it immensely and it's become a healthy way to blow off steam. When I showed my first one to some of my friends, I immediately got a decent offer. I've sold a bunch since-even some of my painter friends said I have something really great and have been very supportive.

I'm an artist and art teacher, and I love this video. I laughed to tears watching you go through your process because I have been there so many times - paint on the floor, on my clothes, scraping something off a canvas that I don't like, exhausted, crazed. Your support and your way of expressing what someone goes through emotionally and financially to create art is awesome.

You know you can’t actually explain why you see art in something. Everyone finds different things in one thing. One of the greatest artists of our generation said art is a question mark and you are the one who chooses what it can be. So as much as it’s logical if someone sees art in a public urinary in the middle of an art exhibition it’s also understandable if someone finds it ridiculous

I do the same thing at art shows I’m occasionally in, when someone says “my 5 year old could do that” I just smile and think; well then why aren’t they here selling art?

Actually, talentless people have done this countless times to show that anybody can make and sell abstract art. Telling people, "yeah but you didn't," when they say they could do it, is kind of shallow. They're not an ass for saying that because it takes almost no skill, and it's been proven time and time again that it can be done. Driven To Abstraction is a documentary showing how a Chinese immigrant forged $60,000,000 Pollock and Rothko paintings for years and fooled the entire "art" world.
My artsy Step mom that loved abstract art..My dad told her that was bullshit and hed prove it..he bought a big canvas and set it up in his backyard. Then he filled condoms with different colors of paint and pitched them at the canvas. He titled it Strikezone and sold it for 1k on EBAY. She was pissed!!!

well just because someone bought it doesn't make it good, but then good is kind of subjective I guess. Sometimes you can make a good painting by mistake, my first efforts were good, then I went down hill, now I'm better, but it was an accident in the beginning.

Problem with abstract art is unless your really good at it and have a definitive style. Your stuck waiting for that ONE buyer who is inspired by the mess you've made. True story
You cannot get good at something that requires no skill it's like getting good at blinking or clapping
@@G.Bfit.93 Not really true. Almost all abstract art, whether or not it's visualy appealing, can be done by just about anyone. But it requires genuine technical ability to produce something like a Mondrian or Kandinsky. Also, good abstract art, meaning art which is isn't just a random mess and has a sense of formal and colour composition, requires genuine thought, control, creativity, and decision making even where the same artist isn't technically capable of representational art.
As someone who just looked up selling art videos, your comment stuck out. I'd say I have very little skill, but a decent eye and a style, but I will totally keep your words at heart for sure.

It is INCREDIBLY hard to revert back to painting or drawing “like a child” after you have been trained to paint “properly” (as most people would say). People underestimate this, and it’s to the point where MOST trained artists would genuinely really struggle to make an abstract piece - because it throws all fundamentals they’ve ever learned, straight out the window.
This is exactly what I've been struggling with, studying Illustration. I find it hard to connect the fun and childlike creativity i had before Uni with my current projects, though that is something I'm working on.
@@dreaming_spacecat I hope you get there! I believe in you! It can be hard, but keep at it and you’ll get there! It was the same for me doing fine art. I find it almost impossible now.
That makes sense, but can one really argue that a piece should be priced highly because the creator was a skilled artist, even if their artistic skill was not applied to that piece?
@@perperperpen people pay for art done by distinguished people, even if that art piece is less than great. They pay for the name more than anything. I don’t think it should be priced higher no. I think the price should be based on the time and effort that was spent on the piece, not the name
I've been painting iconography for decades. I'm tired of portraits and being exact and would love to paint abstract but don't know how. What is it lol?

I look at it from the perspective that art is maybe getting back to the roots of the craft. Less of who you are or who you know. I love it.
the hardest part of being an artist is creating CONSISTENLY good art. Everyone gets lucky now and then. try creating a related series of 10 pieces where they all feel like they belong together but are still different. That's the difference between having fun with it and making into a career, in my opinion.
I'm a knitter, and to buy all the 'raw materials' to finish a simple pair of socks, it'll cost you like anywhere from $35-$50, and that's not even taking in to account the time and skill set you'll need to MAKE the socks.

I’m also a knitter. I’ve never understood why it costs more to make things yourself than to buy them. Same for making your own clothes. I couldn’t believe how much the material was that I wanted to make a twin size blanket. It has kept me from sewing and knitting much more than I do, because why go to all that expense and time when most of what I want to make can be bought for cheaper? Just to be able to say I made it? Not enough incentive for me.

I am a artist and I really believe people have no idea how much goes into each piece of art made. I find that so many people just want to get something for as cheap as they can. So sad. I do both canvas art and resin art on wood.

@@therobinmasterstheory1636 yes! I sold some for $70-$300 it mostly depended on the size of the canvas and how long I spent on it but sadly I stopped painting. i sell crotchet trinkets now!

Yes i bought some dingy abstract paintings purely so I could reuse the canvas and her painting is better than any of those.

Hi Ellbat, firstly wanted to say....you got it. Enjoying the process is exactly what creating art is all about. We don’t all create masterpieces with everything we make, but that makes you no less an artist. I am a registered blind artist and have no doubt what I create isn’t going to be everyone’s cup of tea but I get great enjoyment doing it. So, keep on arting hunny, well done you ❤️
I went to high school specialized in art. I was there four years; got my degree. Still don't have a clue what I'm doing every time I sit down to art, and once I do art, I hate the result, then one sleep later, I love it, and I go back and forth between love and hate.

Art Therapy - Art for/from Stroke survivors, is an incredible way for stroke survivors to improve their mobility and precision control and also decrease depression. Many stroke survivors are sadly left with some form of disability either physically/mentally/emotionally. Art is a brilliant way for survivors to express themselves when words either don't come or cannot possibly fit what they are feeling. There are too many charities dedicated to this to list but it really is a worthwhile cause to investigate. Thanks Ellbat.
I’d like to add to that! Art therapy is for everyone and every age. I actually am an art therapist (in the Netherlands) and work with kids who are very damaged and in need of support and love. Art therapy is a safe and approachable form of therapy 💕
I have an aunt who had a stroke and had the right side of her body paralyzed. It was really hard for her since she was right handed. She used to draw before and was really good at it and I think she thought she would never do anything creative again but she tried and I find that her paintings are now even more beautiful than before, they are more colorful and emotional which to me says that she is happy again (which she wasn't even before the stroke). It really helped her cope with her struggles and made her and our lives more beautiful. It really shows how powerful art is.

@@kathynotenboom I would be very interested in art therapy in the Netherlands. It 's difficult to start in the US because insurance companies don't want to cover it. Starting out in both art and psychology I was very discouraged by other therapist because of this. Maybe I should not have listened.

I disagree, there is definitely bad art. Bad art is art that doesn't have any meaningful purpose or skill in it. Good art sends some kind of message, envokes some kind of feeling or exhibits the skills and effort of the artist. You don't have to be technically skilled to make good art. But you do need to display some sort of effort. If you did a two second scribble, that's not art. Lol
I used to go to art therapy and I also got back into painting and honestly it’s extremely therapeutic and a lot of the time “abstract” art tends to be a bunch of emotions that have come out of you. It’s a really powerful thing x
That's how I started. I'm a working bassist and lost all my gigs due to Covid. Began painting just to have a healthy way to blow off steam. Had always wanted to try it, always loved paintings. Figured it was better than a whiskey bottle. Decided to put a pic of my first painting up on FB.. and had an offer. Some of my commercial artist friends began asking me when I took lessons. They've been incredibly supportive and said I'm onto something. This was November. I've sold a bunch since and a friend offered to set up a web page to sell them (there's almost forty in my tiny apartment haha). I found the process really therapeutic

When I started this video, my feelings were spicy, but at the end I was like "ah yes no ones buying art, I am not alone in the unsold art world" so um yeah thanks for bringing light to the fact that art is hard and takes so much time and money. Much appreciated!
It was so satisfying seeing the splodges blend when she essentially buttered toast on the canvas. Actually really liked the way the colours blended to create new ones.

This sounds like a very fun thing to do, never tried abstract art but I can imagine it's harder than it let's off, it's like avant garde music, some of it is just shit noise and it's surprisingly hard to make it like not shit noise

My abosulte favourite example of abstract art was when a guy went to the display, took of his glasses, placed it on the floor, and sold it...
I wish the writer had read his line and made correction. I am puzzled by "took of his glass," and wish it could be clear.

My art teacher said something very wise once. He said :"if you want to get to know a person's mind, one of the quickest ways to do that is by taking them to a gallery for abstract art. If they ridicule the art or the artist, or even get mad, because they can't understand it, you'll see one character trait that would otherwise be hidden much longer."

I would call your piece "the unappreciated paint" because it reminds me of the backdrop of a lot of artists' workstations from spills, mishaps, cleaning brushes, sampling colors, etc. Basically, all the paint that doesn't make it onto the canvas that nobody but the artists get to see. Too deep? Maybe... but that's the beauty of abstract works right? 😅

Your technique didn't suck, was actually a good technique for abstract. If you try it again (since you have all that paint now lol) just look up a quick color theory breakdown on TH-cam. Certain colors make mud when blended. Honestly if you did that same technique with less browns and just don't put complimentary colors next to each other in the butter knife part, I think you'd end up with a vibrant & "popping" piece.
I was thinking about the same thing. Try using a palette knife instead of a kitchen knife and scissors, less paint, less mud, and maybe surprising results.

I have long thought that i could take glue and the kitchen trash and make something just the same level or better than so much abstract pop art ! And a few years ago there was a story of a couple who were artists and they let their 3 or 4 years old daughter create her own pop art and she would add cotton balls and other objects and they would let it dry and in a few days they would put it up for sale in a gallery and get 10 of thousands of dollars for one of her pieces !

I make beaded jewelry, and family/friends sometimes ask me to make them some, or say I should open an Etsy shop. I reply that opening a shop to me is not really worth it; I could buy $90.00 worth of beading supplies and tools, to sell a bracelet for .99 cents.

as an artist who went torugh a very conservative art school I can confirm this is an accurate representation of how painting class went like
I did a messy pour on a big canvas and stuck it into a display. Someone paid wayyyy more than I thought it was worth and I was AH-mazed. Art is always in the eye of the beholder. I don't want to be in the contest, but I do want to shout out to the creatives who have suffered in this past year.

I have been making abstract art for almost 20 years & this is a hundred times better than anything I could ever dream of doing. Even though you often felt like you didn't know how to proceed, you followed your instincts & that worked very well for you. I also admire your resolve to put it out there & sell it. No one has ever seen my work & I have never attempted to sell anything, kudos to you for trying!

I am no expert but i would say that abstract art is a lot about emotions. You just start painting because you feel like it but it doesnt really have a direction And you just keep going with your emotions. So I personally think you nailed that

Thanks for your generous intentions. Im an artist here in Portugal (waiting to get my residency papers solved) and sometimes its so hard like I would probably bartender or waitress part time to keep making art because when you move to a new country its harder to reach to people

I think you made an excellent effort on creating your first abstract painting. I like it. If you don't sell it on ebay, hang it in a prominent place in your home where it can be admired. I'm an artist who works in a semi abstract, and abstract style of painting. I've sold many paintings. I've seen a lot of abstract art being made on the internet lately, and most of them work in a different way than I do. But more power to them, if they can crank these paintings out like art factory works and then sell them. I've never been able to paint like that. I can't paint the same thing twice either. Anyway, I enjoyed your video.
Kids paint when they feel like it, we paint when we don't, then judge the hell out it! I actually liked it. I suppose the key is doing it for enjoyment, knowing it's unique.
I went to a Yoko Ono exhibit in high school and I literally had nightmares.
I can imagine. I have been to a Marina Abramowitz "the Cleaner" exhibit. Google it, and you will know how I felt. The thing is, the shock factor is very much intentional, and she is very good at it, so I still have respect for her. Yoko Ono on the other hand.... I'm not sure.

I didn't like or appreciate abstract art until I tried it. Now I'm into it. Not all of it. It is fun, and harder than it looks. :)
The real art might be: Finding someone that is willing to pay the price you're asking for.
Of course it takes skill and passion to draw a reaslitic painting. Sometimes it takes months or years.
I can tell you, that as an artist myself, mainly impressionism amd pop art, that abstract is truly one of the hardest genres to tackle. Ive yet to create something that I am proud of.
For a beginner it's a good start don't give up. I love all styles of paintings. I have done abstract and also taught my autistic daughter. It was a communication break through with her. I paint what I feel and it comes out in different styles.
